Murchison Lodge is by far one of the best lodging experiences we have ever had. This quiet, charming B&B is truly wonderful. While the rating system only allows 5 stars, this establishment and its hosts deserve 10 stars!
This quiet and secluded lodge is beautifully appointed, warm and an inviting home away from home. The rooms are spacious, warm, well appointed and comfortable. However, the key is the owners, Phillip, Daphne and their 8 mo old son who treat everyone like family. From the minute you arrive until the minute you drive off, they bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable and fun. They attend to your every need. Phillip even provided me with good places to fish!
Breakfast is served boarding house style and includes custom cooked eggs, homemade preserves, toast, homemade bread and fresh espresso or coffee to order as well as tea if you prefer.
Sitting in the living room or out on the porch next to their lemon tree looking at grazing sheep, you can’t help but relax and unwind.
Do yourself a favor, and book a stay, if for no other reason than to experience their warmth and hospitality.

What a fantastic place. We were very well looked after by the wonderful owners, Philip & Daphne (& little Ben). Who did everything to make our stay relaxing & enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble, and lots of little extra's. The room was fantastic, with a small area to sit outside and relax. The lodge is so peaceful & offers fantastic views. Breakfast was very special, fantastic food & chat provided by the owners, who are very knowledgable & engaging about the area. In all honesty, our stay & time at Murchison Lodge was one of the highlights of our 4 weeks in New Zealand - some very special memories. Thank You

When we arrived on a cold winter afternoon, Phillip had the fire blazing and welcomed us with a tour of the house. It turned out my friend and I were the only guests so we had the place all to ourselves. We spent the evening listening to music, eating delicious pizza from The Cow Shed pizzeria and having drinks by the fire.

The beds were rather firm, I didn't have trouble sleeping though. Even though it was freezing outside, the underfloor heating made the bathroom deluxe! It was such a treat everytime I went in there. There were many thoughtful features in the bedroom, funny books, bottled water, sweet treats and tissues provided.

In the morning the scent of bacon and coffee floated up the stairs. I went down to find our host in the kitchen preparing breakfast. He cooked our eggs to order, everything was delicious. The only thing we found slightly strange was that once breakfast was ready our hosts remained in the house the whole time we were eating. They were very friendly, but my friend and I found it too early for socialising and felt a little uncomfortable. Phillip was very attentive offering more coffee and extra bacon, Daphne was lovely and the baby was cute, but my friend and I hadn't seen each other for a long time and we just wanted to talk to each other without seeming rude. We figured it must be the European hospitality to attend to your guests throughout the meal. Perhaps there could be a tick box on the breakfast menu asking if you would like company or space during breakfast.

I would have liked to light the fire early in the morning but there was no kindling around, and I didn't want to disturb our hosts at 6am. The sun came shining in by breakfast time and there was alternative heating so it wasn't a problem, but would have added to our enjoyment.

Apart from these small things, the overall stay was fantastic and I would highly recommend Murchison Lodge. This couple really know how to run a bed and breakfast!

My husband and I stopped at the Murchison Lodge on the way to Christchurch and were blown away by the warm hospitality we received from the charming owners Phillip and Daphne and their cute 11 month old “assistant manager” son Ben. Lovely setting with a big inviting porch, nice common areas, well appointed rooms ( a huge bathtub in our room was very most appreciated), I could have stayed here a week and have been content. Phillip made a wonderful breakfast with homemade jams and breads, eggs, bacon, fruit and the best coffee I’d had to date in New Zealand. A definite find.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this B & B. Philip, Daphne and little Ben were delightful with lots of recommendations on where to eat and things to do in the local area. The bedrooms have been recently refurbished and are excellent. The breakfast was great very relaxed chatting to our hosts and fellow guests. We would highly recommend.

If you are passing through Murchison, you have to stop here.

The lodge is set in a quiet back street, close to the river but within walking distance to local restaurants. The accommodation was clean, quiet, cosy and a wonderful setting for a relaxing getaway.

The hosts are very friendly and Phillip cooked a delicious breakfast that set us up for the day. We got to say hello to their chickens, their cat called “the great catsby” and their horses. The place has so much character and we would highly recommend.

We will definitely be back!

We spent one night at the Lodge on our way from the West Coast back to Blenheim, so we could fully charge our EV. Peter and Daphne, our hosts, met us on arrival and arranged the necessary electrical connection and provided us with a tasty vegetarian dinner at short notice. The Lodge is in a secluded area near to the Buller River - we could see it from our room - with lovely walks through the bush and fields near the river.
Our room was spacious and well appointed, with comfortable furniture, places for our bags and a lovely ensuite. Our hosts and other guests were interesting and engaging. The breakfast was ample and very tasty, with lovely home baked bread. We would certainly stay at the Lodge when we pass through Murchison again.

As we pulled up the drive, our host Phillip, greeted us and showed us around this warm and comfortable lodge, decorated in beautiful, handcrafted woodwork. Our room was spacious and comfy; the bathroom was modern with a huge walk-in shower and a large soaking tub. We had the option of having dinner served by our hosts Phillip and Daphne, and it was very tasty and filling. Then we nestled in the living room, in front of a warm stove fire and enjoyed a glass of wine, while listening to the birds singing outside. In the morning we feasted on a large breakfast of eggs, bacon, fruit and homemade scones. Yum! After breakfast, there was time for a lovely walk down the garden path that leads to a gazebo overlooking the river. A perfect end to our stay.

Such a warm welcome with everything we could have wanted accommodated. Breakfast was definitely one of the highlights with homemade jam and bread as well as espresso/tea. An honor bar with a number of drink options and a porch looking out on the mountains were also nice touches. The rooms had all the perfect touches from space heaters in the bathrooms so you were toasty getting out of the shower, drinking water, heated mattress pads, toiletries and the sound or crickets outside as you fall asleep. Book one of the upstairs rooms if available- there are so many windows and the views are lovely.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the lodge. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The lodge was very clean, open and comfortable. The breakfast was outstanding!!! We were asked what we wanted and when the night before, but they were flexible that morning if other items looked good (and they all did!). They also cooked us dinner the night we were there as it was a Monday and most restaurants around were closed. Dinner was excellent also!
