Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for 2 nights, the Lazy Cow Backpacker hostel is by far the loveliest and homeliest hostel we've had the pleasure to stay in and I could not recommend it more. It had everything we needed, and even breakfast which we could help ourselves to including cereals, fresh bread, home made spreads and juice. There was also milk in the fridge, tea, coffee and biscuits! It was wonderful to sit by the log fire and relax watching TV or films and play games which there were plenty to choose from, even darts! We didn't get to enjoy the outside space much because of weather but that too looked perfect with lots of seating, tables and heaters. Met one of the owners, Phil, who was super friendly and made us feel very welcome. We booked direct with the hostel which Phil confimed does make a difference to them so something to keep in mind! All the best, hope to be back one day! Kelly and Rachel

The best way to describe The Lazy Cow is " Home away from home ". Thanks Phil for making our stay special. Lovely fire going, great kitchen. Very comfortable beds, great shower.
I certainly do recommend The Lazy Cow.
Many thanks Phil.
Keep up the good work.

Everything was absolutely fabulous. Our ensuite bedroom had a wonderful bathroom and shower, our beds were very comfortable, the whole house is clean as a pin. The kitchen is beautifully stocked and well equipped. The fresh rolls and muffins are a delight. The on-site cafe makes divine pizzas, including our wonderful vegan one.
And best of all, the staff were absolutely wonderful, and nothing was too much trouble. Top notch.

We stayed in the ensuite room and it was comfortable enough for one night. There is a deck off of the ensuite room and the kitchen which is nice place to sit and have dinner. The bed was plenty comfortable however there is not a lot of room for your luggage. I would certainly stay here again if I was passing through the area.

Stayed here in desperate attempt to escape the sandflies in St Arnaud! We didn’t regret it - very friendly staff, reasonable price, room was clean and comfortable.
We had the family room with shared bathroom.
Quite a noisy night due to being right by highway but that’s to be expected.
Had a delicious meal in their restaurant also with first drinks free as staying there.

We stayed in the private room of this adorable hostel so I can't vouch for the other rooms. Hostel holds 14 guests so it is cute, small and personal. The hosts are wonderful, they bake free cake, arrange outings and are just so accommodating. The private room has a double and twin bed with private bath and sliding doors to an outdoor deck. Full kitchen for preparing meals and all for less than the cost of a motel. It cost less than $80NZ.
I really would recommend coming here instead of a motel, it is so lovely!

We stayed here as a stopover before heading to the ferry in Picton in the morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were very clean, pretty and prices are good too! They offered free tea and coffee as well as a free chocolate muffin each which can never be a bad thing right?;) We had to leave early and they were very accommodating, letting us park in their driveway. They also have a pizza restaurant as part of the hostel which could be good if you arrive later, as there's not much else around! We really enjoyed our stay here and would come again!

We stayed here for just one night (sadly) to break up the drive from Abel Tasman down to Franz Josef Glacier. This was our favourite accommodation in our whole month's trip in NZ. Makes a great stop over, whether you are staying in the area or just breaking up the drive.
Rooms are very clean, tidy and extremely cosy with electric blankets for the winter months. The shared bathroom was right next to our room, very clean, powerful hot shower and bath.
Communal living room and kitchen allows for a social environment with games and DVDs for free.
Hosts, Phil and Ali, are so friendly and helpful, offering the best home cooked meal, even late at night, for a great price, fresh eggs from their chickens for breakfast and home cooked muffins for free for the road! Feels much more like a homestay than a hostel.
Cannot speak highly enough of this place.

Stayed one night on my way from Golden Bay down to Punakaiki Rocks. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms tidy with very comfortable and cosy beds. Kitchen was very well equipped and even had communal cooking oil and seasoning but ideally would have liked communal milk too. The hostel was nice and small so really got to know the other people staying. They also have 2 cute cats for cuddles!!!
