I’m writing this review to give thanks to the wonderful team at Maruia River Retreat for my stay over the Easter weekend. Everything was top class, from the initial contact when I made my booking through to the goodbye on my final morning when checking out. I left the retreat feeling like a was floating on a cloud 😊 You can do as much or as little as you like, it caters for everyone. I am an active relaxer so enjoyed the yoga in the mornings with Cristina and then took myself off for a drive to see Lewis Pass and Reefton, lots of stunning walks along the way just waiting to be explored! The evenings shared around the dining table were lots of fun with the other guests, we got to know each other quickly and everyone was interesting to talk to. Meals were outstanding but you didn’t leave feeling like you’d over indulged. Rooms extremely comfortable and lovely view over the river and greenery below. All in all it was a great place for a break and I can’t wait to visit again later in the year. I feel the value for money here is good, it luxurious without being over the top. I only had two nights due to commitments meaning I couldn’t extend to the third night which Cristina had recommended. I would definitely do the 3 nights next time so I could enjoy a more leisurely day one day and indulge in a massage as the other guests did who were staying 3 nights. Highlights - The drive from Nelson to Maruia via the Nelson Lakes (Rotoiti) where there is a lovely loop track which takes you through some pristine beech forest The dinner on the second night where we sat outside in the covered area and enjoyed Lasse’s meal cooked entirely from the wood fired oven The yoga classes in the morning before breakfast where I was guided by Cristina to take the steps to do a handstand and headstand Driving to Lewis Pass to see the stunning scenery and plants on the Doc managed nature walk there

Property's Favourite Review
I travelled here in late Spring for a two night retreat stay and had my expectations exceeded on every level. The rooms and main area are well-appointed and immaculately clean; the surroundings are indescribably beautiful. The food was elegantly simple and delicious and the outdoor hot tub and the two saunas made me so relaxed that I slept like a log on the super comfortable bed. Lasse’s morning yoga classes were the perfect start to my days. Most of all, though, I loved the warmth, care and professionalism that Christina and Lasse showed myself and the other guests. They genuinely want their visitors to have a wonderful time, and it shows in every detail they attend to. Though I was a single traveller among couples I never felt out of place. If you want or need a few days of beauty and peace and unobtrusive attentiveness to recharge yourself, then go to Maruia River Retreat. I left feeling rejuvenated and 10 years younger! I look forward to returning again as soon as I can

I was fortunate to visit Maruia River Retreat in late January for the Rachel Grunwell retreat. An easy drive from Nelson airport, this is a beautiful relaxing nurturing spot. And wow the food was an unexpected delight…absolutely first class meals with local and home grown produce. ! Amazing hosts in Cristina, Lasse and Naenae. Cristina’s yoga classes were fabulous and she has such a deep understanding of the body. The forest bathing and outdoor sauna was so relaxing. Definitely a spot to unwind.

Hosts Cristina and Lasse have created a special and welcoming environment integrated with the beautiful natural world of the Maruia River. We woke up to a warming yoga session followed by an amazing continental breakfast. The day is spent listening to bird songs and taking walks along any of the many walkways across the property. All topped off by the delicious cooking of Lasse in the evening. The room is very comfortable with lovely views. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it was a shame we weren't able to take an extra day or two at least.

Hands down, the best retreat in NZ. A completely immersive and restorative experience, where the food and hospitality are unparalleled and the beauty has to be seen to be believed. The yoga healed soul and body, and the food was exquisite in taste and presentation, but also in goodness. The villa was beautiful and so so comfortable - with every possible detail thought of including putting little blackout squares over glowing light switches for complete rest. I cannot overstate the thought and care that Cristina, Lasse, Nanae, and Alex bestowed on us, or the gratitude that we found the incredible serenity, peace, and happiness of this place and the hosts. Thank you!
