Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a pleasant surprise. After overdosing on burgers and chips for the last few days, we didn't expect to get really good sweet and sour pork, and wontons at a Nelson Lakes tavern.
Thanks Kim, and Mr. Kim, for making our trip!

So after finding Murchison booked out we were advised to continued to the Owen River Taven and Motel..Kim the owner was amazing about even taking our booking from the car,Kim greeted us at the property . The motel units was super fresh and clean and modern and faced the mountains and river. I suggest you push for the units facing the bush and river!!
It is a fun place to stay with a great hostess..Linda and myself say thanks..plus that we had to also return a day later to collect some items we left behind which Kim called to tell us.....lols..

Way out in the whop whops is this cute little Tavern with motel accommodation.
We didn't want to make the full trip to Picton from Hokitika so decided to stop here for the night. Huge plus, was we were allowed to have Mia or puppy with us. We were given a suite with a nice big patch of grass for Mia. We were not disappointed with this choice. Motel suite is comfortable with a king size bed, tv, huge bathroom with shower. Came across to the Tavern for dinner... we went with Chinese and wow, the food was brilliant. We are definitely coming back when we hit the Sth Island for a few weeks later in the year. Thank you to Kim and her hubby for their great hospitality.

We stopped here over night after white water rafting in Murchison. Admittedly we thought it was closer to Murchison when I booked, however it is a good 20km out of town. When we first arrived we thought.. Oh dear what have I booked, but even though the Tavern looks old and the accommodation is in a small little block it's actually a really nice place and the owners are super friendly and very accommodating. The rooms are very clean with a big comfortable king size bed. The tavern provides a nice atmosphere with really good meals. I did feel the meals were a little over priced but they were delicious.you can hear the Owen River from the accommodation but you can not see it unless you go for a walk. Should I ever be going this way again I would definitely stay here.

One night stop and we really enjoyed it. We used a Motel unit and it was very nice and comfy, great nights sleep. The 'Tavern' was great fun. Very friendly pair running it (Kim&John). Played darts and pool until we met some other guests from Australia and France, good laughs until it was time to eat. Then the best Chinese meal we've eaten in ages!
Thanks, if we ever come this way again, we'll be back!

This is an okay spot to camp or car camp, and there is a nearby river, but the small camp site bathroom was not very clean, and the staff was unfriendly and not very helpful.

Beware fallen tree branches around the trees in the flat camp site (where vehicles drive) since they can flip up and scratch/damage your vehicle.

There are a few curious sheep around.

Others have praised this place to stay. We agree. Kim was very kind and calming. The room at the back wasn't noisy despite the extra traffic on the highway. Bar meals were nicely cooked and the whole stay was enjoyable.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the cabin block likely to be quieter. WiFi available in the tavern.

Just as publicised a unique old style country tavern with motel accommodation. The room was clean and functional, the sound of the river was the only real sound you could hear even though the Tavern is situated off the main Highway. The beds were comfortable and heating was effective. No cooking facilities in the rooms, however the Tavern provided freshly cooked meals. The short walk down to the river camping area adjacent to the Tavern is well worth taking. Overall a pleasant stay with friendly helpful hosts. There are a number of natural and historical features within easy driving distance from the Tavern to fill the days, and Murchison is just a short drive down the road. No wi-fi in Motel rooms but guests are welcome to use the wi- fi in the Tavern

Stopped in at the tavern for some cold beer and a feed after some time tramping and caving up nearby Mt Owen. A real great pub with excellent service and satisfying meals for reasonable prices. Plently of different meal choices ranging from burgers to Chinese food to mixed grills. Lots of interesting stuff to look at around this old pub as well.
