Built from 1898 and opened in 1900, Dunstan House is an iconic local historic building situated in the heritage Precinct on the main street of Clyde. It's grand entrance welcomes travellers exploring the regions historic goldfields; discovering the fine wines of Central Otago, or simply looking for a luxurious getaway. Offering boutique accommodation, this heritage hotel features the original elegant kauri wooden staircase which links the living areas and accommodation. A large colonial veranda overlooks the main street of Clyde offering an elevated sunny spot for guests to soak in the atmosphere. Guests find each of our rooms individually decorated, reflecting that Victorian era, while mixing that elegant turn-of-the-century style with modern conveniences and comfort. Eight of the eleven rooms available have had full ensuites fitted, (with some including the original deep baths) while maintaining the historic feel and the same attention to detail and dedication to comfort.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had brunch here and give them top marks for the fresh, beautifully cooked and delicious food and great coffee. You always feel welcomed here by the staff and owners who will often stop for a chat. Food is well presented and delivered in a timely manner. Becoming a favourite place to eat of mine

The manager told us they have to keep the front door locked during the day because people walking past on the street try to come in thinking it’s a museum! The front lobby is certainly like stepping back in time.
We had the Fountain Room, a queen bed with ensuite with windows onto the front verandah. All the bedrooms, being Victorian era, are quite small and not very soundproof. The historic character and excellent location on the main street of Clyde make up for any short comings, and the friendly and helpful staff are the icing on the cake.

Hi Suzanne, Thanks so much for your visit. Yes, unfortunately given these times, we do have to keep our front door locked for the privacy and safety of our guests. This house does attract attention given its historic grand stature in our main street, we do allow those that dine within our cafe to have a sneak peak around the lounge and foyer areas though.... Had two nights at Dunstan House. Ian was the consummate host, friendly, welcoming & nothing was ever too much trouble. The rooms were clean, tidy, well appointed &, much to my delight, sympathetically decorated in the style that is the historic hotel. A wonderful continental spread is put on for breakfast & 'proper' coffee is on offer. The downstairs cafe also sells a very moreish spread of foods, many made with locally sourced ingredients. If you want to know what to see & do in & around Clyde then Ian happily provides pointers.

We stayed for one night before we spent 4 days cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail and one night after we finished.
We had a lovely, warm, genuine welcome from Ian both times and he and other staff were on hand to ensure our stay went well. We felt valued.
The exterior and interior of Dunstan House are charming and having use of the shady wrap-around balcony was a bonus.
Our room and en-suite bathroom area were spacious enough for all our stuff.
The continental breakfast was good quality and quantity.
Easy off-road parking.
We had a room at the back and it was very peaceful. Superb blackout curtains and respectful, quiet fellow guests made for restful nights.
Dunstan House is right at the centre of the cute town of Clyde, an excellent location for exploring the area. As Clyde is a hub for various cycle trails, it's ideal for anyone using these.

Eight of us (4 couples) cycled the Lake Dunstan trail and finished with the most lovely evening here. We all slept well and we’re very well cared for and started our next days travel with a super breakfast and packed lunch by their cafe. We highly recommend this utterly magic place to take you back in time.

There should be a listing for this under restaurants as this review is about today’s fantastic lunch. Thanks to our friends in Wanaka we have discovered Clyde which is what Wanaka was 30 years ago according to locals. Our lunch was first a very beautifully prepared Beef Burger with beet root, chutney, aioli with a tasty side salad. Mine was the Lamb Korma which has been the best lamb dish that I have had in New Zealand! It came with garden fresh vegetables and a very tasty mint sauce. In the counter were pastries so good they should be “banned”. Mine was a ginger based square topped with brown sugar icing while my partner had the Oatey square both were sinful and were washed down with excellent Lattes. The owners should be proud of their establishment as the food and service were absolutely brilliant.

Stayed here for two nights prior to starting on our south island cycling tour.

A lovely old hotel with a great history. Our room on the top floor was adjacent to the balcony so we were able to sit outside on the verandah with our evening glass of wine and watch the world move by.
Our bed was extremely comfortable

The continental breakfast was more than adequate and was quite enjoyable. Ian, the owner gave great service.

We just turned up at Dunstan House to see if there was accommodation available immediately. We were greeted by Ian, the owner, who was very friendly. He showed us around the hotel and we chose the Powder Room. The hotel is stunning. The room rate included a continental breakfast available in the hotel cafe. A nice touch. Al la carte breakfasts and expresso coffee could be purchased. A privilege to stay at this beautiful hotel.

Really outstanding everything at the cafe - so friendly, professional and personable. We had excellent coffee, breakfast, tea and cake and also a gorgeous custom salad on our various stops. The staff and owners were very responsive and treated us like long-time locals even though it was constantly full and kept everyone on their toes. The building itself is beautifully restored and cafe creatively and cozily decorated. Would love to stay here on our next visit. Highly recommended.
