Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Whakapapa Holiday park due to its convenience for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. In this respect the park is ideal being cross at hand with a shuttle bus service operating from the park entrance.
Staff at the park were great and very helpful, but from a camping perspective the site isnt great. We stayed in a powered site in a large motorhome that only just fitted in the site provided. Virtually no room either side and surrounded by trees. This has the benefit of privacy but claustrophobic!
The kitchen, showers and lounge areas were all pretty average although with free use of pans/utensils in the kitchen. The laundry services were also very reasonably priced.
There is a nice short walk down to the river from the site.

Can not say enough how pleasant our stay was. Our group made up of family members with kids booked out the whole lodge for 2 nights. We loved not having to share bathrooms and the kitchen with anyone else...it's yours exclusively when you hire the whole thing.
Had room to park our 4 vehicles right outside. Owners/managers were very kind and understanding that we needed an extra hour to check out as we had a big whanau to clean up after. Plenty of room for us all to hang out and the fireplace and multiple heaters kept us very warm and cosy. Would highly recommend staying here when hitting the maunga....it's super close to it. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We had a camper van and was given a site close to the facilities. The setting is in the bush and the river which is nice and relaxing. The host in the office was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The kitchen and bathrooms could do with some upgrading. The hobs (although quite a few) were quite hard to navigate as the icons on the hob have worn away and you have to guess where to touch buttons are to operate the elements. On the plus side, there were alot of utensils and cooking items available for use although they look like ones left behind by previous campers. For the state of it, it was clean and tidy. The convenience of its location was great as it is approx a 10 min drive up to Whakapapa Ski Field and there is a shuttle service for guests if required.

I am not a Holiday Park type of person. I prefer full service/amenity type accommodation. However, my stay at the Whakapapa Holiday Park may have changed my mind.
Such a lovely friendly welcome at reception, with excellent directions to my Cabin, and also information about Eating Options, Park Facilities and also Emergency Procedures. The Reception has a good stock of goodies at what looked to be reasonable prices. There is also Kai cart at the front of the park. Was closed when I arrived, no doubt due to the inclement weather. But was open again in the morning, with a few people enjoying coffee in the cool morning air.
The Park is set in beautiful bush, and it felt really private. The cabins were situated under a canopy of lush bush, with parking directly outside the unit.
I had one of the Modernized Cabins, and they were really quite delightful. It was split level, with a double bed on the upper level, and 4 singles (2 in bunk form) down the bottom. Table and chairs, and also a heat pump that kept the whole cabin really toasty. In fact the upper level may have even been a bit too warm!
The Bathroom block, and Kitchen was just back up the driveway a little way. All were exceptionally clean and tidy. Showers had great water pressure and lovely and hot.
The Holiday Park was very quiet. It was off peak with the Ski Season not quite going, and the weather was really really poor. This meant for a lovely, quiet night away. I was the only guest at that end of the Holiday Park.
Free WiFi offered to all guests, and it was super super quick and reliable. Hard to find a accomodation provider that offers good WiFi. I was able to stream Netflix and also browse the net with no issues.
It was a lovely night, with the rain, hail and wind hammering the cabin, and all the bush above and around thrashing around. Magic really!
Look forward to returning to the Whakapapa Holiday Park. Highly recommend! :)

WOW, what an amazing review and thank you so much for taking the time to write it, we truly appreciate it. Sadly we did experience some pretty severe weather conditions over this period but here's hoping that has passed now. What ever you are doing now we hope it is in sunshine and enjoyable. All the very best for the rest of 2022

Really enjoyed staying here though the spaces and roads were a bit tight, it was quiet when we were here but I imagine at peak season, all those big campers on the narrow roads could be stressful. Fresh water house is by the dumping site, not by each individual site, but that helps keep the area more natural and I imagine helps keep costs down. We could hear the river from our spot (11) but if you have a relatively small van I recommend site 19, which has a nice open view down to the river, without being right next to the facilities.
Facilities were good, there is a bath if required or plenty of showers, although they are built for short people, if you're 5'8 or under you'll be fine. I'm 6ft and had to bend to get under the shower but I managed, water pressure is obviously never great in campsites but wasnt the worst and the hot water was hot!

The self contained cabin needs to be condemned. Spend your money elsewhere. List of issues (some of these have been bought up from other guests):
Roof leaking in bathroom in two places.
The cobwebs are still there.
The heatpump looks like it hasn't been cleaned or serviced since installation.
The wall mounted heater in bedroom looks like an electrical hazard and only works intermittently.
The bunk beds make a heap of creaky noise when any movement on the beds forcing the kids to sleep with the mattresses on the floor.
The metal gutters have rotted out and leak badly.
The down pipe is missing from one gutter so spills out onto the parking area.
Go spend your money somewhere else. Crap really.

Great location as you’re located in Whakapapa and can start several walks right from there.
Super friendly staff at check in, very welcoming and gave great advice for where to eat and the coffee cart hours the following day.
Campsite area and parking is close to the entrance so easy to walk in and out.
Facilities very clean and close to the camping area too.
A bit more expensive compared to DOC campsites, but the location and facilities were worth the extra buck.
Would definitely stay again.

Nice setting and handy for getting to and from the popular attractions like the Alpine crossing but found the shower facilities dirty and unkempt. Travelling through the north island, it was definitely one of the poorer kept camp sites. Otherwise fair access to dump stations for RV, kitchen facilities etc. The standard is just so high across new Zealand, I was quote shocked at the cleanliness of this one.

Hi there.
There is a small playground no more than 5 minutes walk from the Holiday Park.
Hi Chang,
The start for the Northern Circuit track is about 200 metres down the road from our Holiday Park. From the track entrance it is a 3 hour walk to Mangatepopo hut, the first hut on the track.
If you are referring to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (which is part of the Northern Circuit walk) ROAM Shuttles (which operate from our Holiday Park) offer shuttles to the start which is Mangatepopo car park.
Hope this answers your query.
Cheers,
Jenny
