Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Of course when I say "very good" this is in the context of a very cheap campsite, with one toilet ("long drop") and no drinking water. It has a small cooking shelter with some sinks where you can wash up. It was dry when we were there, so we cooked outside and enjoyed our gourmet meal. Only $6 each. Thankfully everyone seemed to go to sleep early. Many of the doc campsites are not manned. You are expected to put the money in an envelope and post it into a box. There was nobody official here when we arrived, and the booth had no envelopes left for payment. But someone came in the morning so we were able to pay. We gave €10 for which, in my reckoning , they would have got more than $12 so my conscience was clean!

We had a campervan and a tent. There were nice spots to camp but unfortunately it was rainy. We found a nice grassy spot for the tent. We stayed 2 nights since we were doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It is quiet but can get busy so go early. There was a cool swimming hole and a cooking area. Toilets were kept clean. Very cool walking trails as well.

We recently had three fantastic, peaceful nights here. DOC campsite pass is valid here. Perfectly located to get to various awesome walks/hikes and really nice and quiet (when sillies don’t rock up past 22:00 and smash into a rock!) It’s a tight campsite, we’re in a 7metre Sprinter and just about managed to get around. Toilets provided. Little to no phone signal. DOC came round every so often to check people had paid. Make sure you take your rubbish with you people! Find us on YouTube if you’re touring @saltyskin

A great DOC site with individual campervan slots suitable for long wheel-based vehicles. Camping area, toilets and access to walks all available. Tongariro shuttle picks up from the campsite driveway, real convenient.

DOC Camp à proximité du tongariro afin de faire le trek le lendemain, aux abords d'un bosquet qui permet d'être un peu abrité entre les places... toilettes simples mais ça a l'avantage d'être tôt sur le tongariro...

Set back off the road down a long drive, the camp is nice and quiet. The sites are separated with trees and shrubbery so are somewhat private. It cost $13 each for the night and payment is on an honesty system with your money going into a payment box at the front of the camp. I would recommend this camp as a good overnight option for anyone doing any of the day walks in the area. Most of the people at our campground were up at 5.30am do do the Tongariro Crossing.

NOTE: There are long drop toilets available, but no showers.

I guess the rates went up or I went in high season, but we had to pay $13pp. It's a fairly small campground. We arrived around 6pm in the middle of the week in March and there were many tent sites still available in the front section though the best ones (more privacy, surrounded by bushes) were taken. There were some picnic tables, places to hang stuff to dry, and a cooking shelter with faucets. The stream is easily accessible as well. We heard kiwis calling at night too, so that was pretty cool. No view of the mountains from the tent camping area though.

This is a quiet area with secluded treed sites. The cost is a mere $6 pp so don't scrimp and try to rip off the DOC! It is first come first served so try to get there around 4pm to secure a spot. The road in is gravel but decent. Unfortunately it was pouring by the time we got there but we were tired after the hike so it all worked out.

Great spot for freedom camping with a motorhome.

The camp runs on an honesty system and costs $6 per person.

The camp runs along a beautiful river and separates tents and campervans.

We had a very secluded spot and in the distance you could see the mountains.

The area is very close to the visitors centre and the start of the Tongariro National alpine crossing walk.

Bookings aren't required and it works on a first come basis. We were here in spring and it didn't fill up.

Gravel access into the site. It's also a pretty social site, met some really interesting and friendly people.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this spot for freedom camping to anyone ⛺️⛺️
