Welcome to the Hawthorne Inn. We are a boutique bed & breakfast situated on Concord’s historic mile, just steps away from the heart of American Literary and Revolutionary history; on land once owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The property was built in the 1860’s and has been functioning as a bed and breakfast for more than 40 years. Inspired by design and elegance, the Inn has recently been fully renovated to incorporate 7 luxury guest rooms and ample shared public spaces to create a truly unique experience for our guests. We offer the perfect balance of elegance, charm and privacy whilst still being within walking distance of Concord’s Historic Center, the Old North Bridge, the homes of Concord’s most famous writers and the Minuteman National Park. We aim to offer a luxury and unique all season experience to our guests whether they are tourists visiting for the spring/summer/fall season or business guests visiting many of the multi-national corporations located in the area.

What a gorgeous place! Everything is done to a very high standard, from the furniture to the linens, to the wallpaper and art. It's quiet, comfortable, and elegant without being stuffy. It's a nice walk into the small "downtown" area of Concord, passing by several historic homes. I can't wait to come back!

They were vigilant about cleanliness and COVID-19 precautions as well; it felt very safe and clean, and we all wore masks when in the common areas. No breakfast, but we had nibbles and Nespresso coffee so it was totally fine.

We stayed at The Hawthorne Inn the night before moving in to our home in the area. It was the first time we had done anything indoors since the beginning of the pandemic. Check-in and out are contactless and the property is spotless. I liked staying at a smaller property vs a large hotel where you could have contact with countless people and they have two sets of stairs if you’re staying on the second floor. The room we stayed in was large and beautifully decorated - the Alcott room - with a lovely bath. It was the first good night’s sleep I had experienced in a while. The property had several comfortable looking places to sit outside but the weather wasn’t cooperative so we didn’t get to experience that. Overall, highly recommend and would stay again if I didn’t live in town now!!

It’s been a few years since we stayed at the Hawthorne Inn, but we’re still talking about it. We truly enjoyed our visit and the owners did a great job of making us feel welcome. No detail was overlooked. The breakfast (obviously pre COVID) was very tasty, the room was elegant and clean, and rest of the inn was enchanting. If we have the pleasure of going back to Concord (an amazing historical treat itself), we’ll hope to stay again at the Hawthorne.

Unfortunately my husband and I had to cancel our trip booked for October 2020 due to the travel risk for our age and being from Florida considered a hot spot state for the Virus. The current cancellation policy on their website states a $25 cancellation fee, however, the Inn charged us 20% of the total reservation amount versus what their current policy states. They refused to honor their own cancellation policy reverting back to their policy of October 2019 when we originally booked the reservation.

A beautiful inn that one would expect in New England. We were there on a snowy night before going into Concord Center.
The only thing negative is that the guests on the floor above made an annoying racket. How many times does one have to drop their shoes on the floor?
Bed was good (king). We chose the ADA accessible room because of the bed size.
Bathroom had a walk-in shower and nice amenities. Good room temp.

Hi Denise! We were so glad you found us and we had an available room for you, especially so close to Orchard House! We loved having you both! I am so sorry about the noise upstairs, we will keep an ear out for this in the future. Hope to have you again!- Alyce B., Innkeeper

My husband and I stayed one night for just a quick getaway in the Emerson Room. The room was perfect....loved the fireplace. The bathroom was so nice! Quick trip to town that was really cute and quite a few restaurants. Would love to go back when everything is "fully functioning".

We made reservations in February for a planned trip to Concord in May. Our credit card was immediately charged for half of the intended four-night stay. (As an aside, they do not take American Express unless you're willing to pay an extra 3% .) Because of health problems, it became clear that we wouldn't be able to make the trip in May. We canceled our reservations five weeks in advance and were charged 20% of one night's stay. To be fair, they clearly state this on their confirmation when you make your reservation -- but that wasn't until AFTER I had made the reservation (which was already too late to cancel without being charged the 20% fee). We travel a lot and have never run across such a punitive cancellation policy -- and we have stayed at far more exclusive properties than this. I would seriously advise anyone -- unless you happen to be clairvoyant and know with absolute certainty that nothing will change your plans -- to avoid doing business with this establishment.

My husband and I stayed here for a few days recently. We had never visited this area and the reviews of Hawthorne Inn were excellent so we decided to give it a try. Maybe we were expecting too much, but we at least expected that they would do what their web page advertised. Breakfast was the same offering every day of the 3 mornings we were there...eggs were the main course...where were all the other offerings the web page mentions? Their web page mentioned brownies and Chinese Chewies and other things as afternoon and evening refreshments...we were never offered any of that and never saw anything out in the dining room...other guests appeared to be wondering about that as well. Again, if you don't want to offer that, please do not list it as a highlight of your Inn on the web page...be honest about what you do or do not offer. We were tired and a bit hungry on a few afternoons/evenings...didn't expect to have to go to the local drug store for snacks and drinks.

Also, I know travelers can be challenging, but please find more patience when they are asking you about travel in the area. We felt rushed every time we asked a question about how to get somewhere. Yes, we were uncertain about what to do, but would have appreciated a bit more patience and concern for our questions.

Kim & Dan, This is a surprising review as you had told us: "You saved our vacation"! You came to us due to a last minute change of plans because you said "there was nothing to do" in Vermont. When you arrived, 3 1/2 hours before check-in, Gregory graciously offered you beverages and snacks [which you declined] and sat with you reviewing the map of Concord and helping you plan your three days with us suggesting historical sightseeing, walks at Walden Pond, the Great Meadows and at the National Park along with restaurant options for lunch and dinner. On the two days spent touring Concord, you were met at the door by Marilyn in the late afternoons and offered hot or cold beverages and snacks [which you declined both times]. In point, during your stay, we had fresh Italian Cookies from the North End of Boston as well as homemade Brownies. Each morning at breakfast, you sat at the table 30 minutes before the time that you knew breakfast was to be served. Each day, we served you when you arrived at table. On the first day, you were told that the hot dish [our two selections of homemade Quiche] were still in the oven but were offered various preparations of egg dishes custom made to your specifications. Day two, we planned eggs and, again, prepared two different types to your liking. Day three: omelets made with our freshly grown herbs, avocados, four different cheeses and a variety of sautéed peppers taking into account Kim's cheese allergy. We served our award winning Hickory Dickory Bosc Pear one day and two different fresh fruit dishes the other. And, always, our own Homemade Granola with four Yogurt choices and, too, three kinds of bread from our local, renowned, Nashoba Bakery. Numerous discussions were had: History, Travel, your three Schnauzers, ect. When you said that you were going to Boston for a day, we offered to help plan your day but you said that you were taking a Trolley Tour which would cover many Historical aspects of the city so, we suggested taking the one that includes a tour of the Harbor by Boat: an excellent thing to do on a glorious Summer Day. And, our suggested Seafood Restaurant, Legal Seafood, you quite enjoyed. Contrary to your suggestion that "travelers can be challenging" we find that our guests are terrific people and we are happy to offer our time, expertise and opinions. Kim and Don, we did sense your frustration with each other concerning your drive to Boston. It was obvious Don was unhappy that you chose to drive after we had clarified where the commuter train parking could be found. In truth, Marilyn spent at least 30 minutes with you explaining various ways to get into Boston: train, subway [which she nixed] and driving. Maps were offered, routes highlighted and suggestions made. Even with this, other guests, too, were helpful in their advice to you. We welcomed you. And, simply, do not understand why you were so unhappy on the beautiful early summer days spent with us. Marilyn & Gregory

The Hawthorne Inn was neat and clean, with lots of amenities. Marilyn and Gregory et al have perfected the B&B experience. Each day at the Hawthorne Inn starts with a healthy and plentiful breakfast served with a great attitude and camaraderie. Just mention something you might like to have and watch it appear with no fuss or complaints. Want to know the best places to visit or the best restaurants in the area? Just ask and you will find a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. Need directions? They’ll even draw you a map! Come back to the inn and spend the evening chatting with your delightful hosts, or stroll around the spectacular gardens. Find a little out of the way place to sit and read, or just relax and watch the clouds go by. You could also spend time just looking around the inn at all the incredible works of art and antiques Marilyn and Gregory have acquired over the years, or just relax in your exceptionally comfortable room. The nights are quiet and peaceful and the beds are cozy, with several soft pillows. A week is not enough time to spend at the Hawthorne Inn. This bed and breakfast has a lot of history attached to it as well, and it is right across the street from Nathaniel Hawthorne's home and Orchard House, Home of the Alcott's.
A word about my service dog:
Federal law requires that business owners allow my service dog to enter their place of business, but that doesn't mean I meet with friendly attitudes everywhere I go. The people at the Hawthorne Inn went out of their way to welcome my dog and make her as comfortable as they made me. It is VERY service dog-friendly here. You really won't find a better place to stay in Concord.

While my wife loves B&Bs, I typically do not. That said, if more were like the Hawthorne Inn I could become a convert. Despite owning the inn for only a week or so, Toni and Mark were great hosts who I expect to see again. Our room was large, immaculate, and the linens top notch. Toni also serves a great breakfast. Given their renovation plans, it will be very interesting to see the Inn evolve.
