Stay somewhere that doesn't feel like just anywhere. The State Hotel lies in the heart of downtown Seattle, and here the city's spirit is unmistakably apparent. There's a sense you get upon stepping inside, wandering around, and chatting with us. Your experience at The State will be an immersion in local flavor and adventure. The character of Seattle was borne out of creativity and an adventurous spirit. That's the soul of this property. What was originally built in 1904 as a medical office building soon became something very different. In the 1930s, Ben Paris, a Seattle entrepreneur, operated a billiard parlor, gambling hall, and restaurant out of the Eitel building. Almost a century later, it's been converted into a contemporary, independent, downtown Seattle hotel.

The State Hotel boasts a stylish decor and a friendly hipster vibe that many guests adore, complemented by a prime location near Pike Place Market. While the staff is lauded for their attentive service and local recommendations, there are murmurs of dissatisfaction regarding extra fees that dampen perceptions of value. Accommodations offer stunning views and comfort for some, yet others report small rooms and disturbances. Amenities like the rooftop and restaurant are popular, despite criticisms of additional charges. Cleanliness is consistently praised throughout the property.

Lovely boutique hotel. Gracious staff, beautiful lobby and easy check-in made for a great first impression. Room felt spacious and comfortable. Decor is funky, yet chic - the view was incredible - Pike Place Market and Elliott Bay - amazing! Wonderful mattress and bedding - so comfortable. Bathroom was roomy and well it. Beverage service (coffee/tea) was nice but no fridge, probably the only improvement I'd suggest. Everything was very clean and well maintained. Loved the attached restaurant - Ben Paris - excellent Happy Hour and the $15 credit from the hotel was great. Would highly recommend!

I really liked this hotel; it has a subtle bohemian vide which enhances its attraction. My room was spacious with an excellent bed. Bath was very spacious with a walk-in tiled shower. When I checked in, I was given 3 poker sized chips with the restaurant's name (Ben Paris) on them. I was told that each chip had a value of $15 which could be used for dining in the restaurants. Saff was very accommodating and friendly. Room key card was coded to your floor, which you had to tap on the sensor then push the button for your floor, this was a great security feature to prevent unwanted wandering by guest.

The location was unbelievable, we were able to park and walk almost everywhere we wanted to go and we are not physically fit people. The hotel was fun and modern. The rooms were smaller than a typical hotel but it did not feel too small. We unpacked what we needed for the time we would be in Seattle and then put our suitcases away. We had desert at Ben Paris and the S’mores Panna Cotta was unbelievable! Hotel staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. If you plan on parking, make sure you reserve it before you get there, as the attendants are not particularly helpful, but they are also not directly affiliated with the hotel.

During earlier visits to 30 countries and recent trips to 5 including costly Norway and UAE (plus USA cities and events), no one has met the $10-per-bottle price of water at The State. The hotel justifies it as typical for the area, so King County must be very special since we have not paid close to that anywhere else—$6 at Christmas Markets, and even $7 at one airport, but never $10, especially at a nearly $400-per-night room like at The State. I simply cannot shed the perception that it’s a rip-off. Would rather pay a $10 higher room charge and have complimentary water in the room instead of being charged an extra $20 for the two bottles that were there. I’ve commented before that this location is great for Pikes Place Market, Triple-Door, Enterprise Car Rental and cruise departures, but to me, this petty profit grab on bottled water spoils the value.

The hotel room was very comfortable, and the location is great. However, you need to ask a LOT of questions. There was boxed water in my room next to the bed. There were no signs indicating prices, nor was there a list of "optional" items for purchase anywhere in the room. I assumed that the water was complimentary (much like the toiletries and the bathrobes customers can use). In fact, when I received the final bill, they charged me $10 each for the boxed water. I never would have consumed it had they made this clear during check-in or anywhere in the guest room. Be extremely careful about what you use and ask lots of questions. The fact that they would charge an outrageous amount for water and not even disclose that makes me never want to return to this place. There are MANY lovely hotels right in the same area, so you don't need to settle for one that is not transparent in their pricing.

It seems odd that management of this hotel apparently thinks it’s ok to risk their ratings over $10 small boxes of water they leave ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND they don’t bother to tell you you’ll be charged for if you open them! You’re supposed to see the little $10 sticker on the box before you open it! Oh, ok! I’m guessing the hotel probably spends maybe 25 to 50 cents for these boxes of water. When you check out, you’ll also be charged the extra $25/day resort fee for your stay. We did know that upfront however. You’d think with that fee they might be able provide a couple of 50 cent 16 oz. water boxes. It’s a nice little hotel, great location, and a great staff. But when you feel like you’re getting gouged, it leaves a bad taste. I’ve seen other reviews regarding the $10 gouging for boxes of water. The hotel’s response: “We have drinking water available in the lobby.” Ok, fine. That does NOT address the $10 boxes of water in the rooms. It’s not the money, I can afford the water. It’s the principle. If you really want to continue your price gouging policy of charging $10 for a 16 oz box of water, and risk more irritated customers, at least make the $10 stickers on the boxes bigger and red so we might actually notice we’ll pay $10 before we open it. Bottom line: it’s underhanded. If it wasn’t, you’d tell every guest about the $10 boxes of water when they check in. And you don’t do that.

Fantastic Location & lovely room - has the feel of a luxurious boutique hotel. Really enjoyed the Ben Paris Restaurant & Bar. Front desk staff are terrific. But beware of the $10 bottle of water - left 'conveniently' on your bedside table... and this hotel imposes a $25 per night 'resort fee' on top of your rate. This hotel is not a resort. There is no pool or spa or any other 'resort' amenities that would justify this fee. It's a blatant money grab that spoils what is otherwise a very charming hotel.

Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to leave us with your lovely review! We are beyond delighted to know that you loved your visit with us. It is especially wonderful to know that you enjoyed our iconic location and the artistic design of our building. We hope to clear away any questions regarding our amenity fee, so just to clarify, the fee itself is $25 per night and does include a $15 daily credit for the restaurant, as well as 20% off admission to the Seattle Art Museum, a 15% discount at Browne Family Vineyards’ Seattle tasting room, and access to other things like the terrace. We really appreciate your feedback, and would be thrilled to host you again for any future trips to Seattle! We hope to welcome you again soon. Cheers! The State Hotel team

4-star is for great location by Pike Place Market. Otherwise, the $10 charge for water at the bedside seemed excessive for a $400 room and it took all night to raise the room temperature from 67 to 72. Views not too nice unless water-view requested.

I stayed for 2 nights. The location and view (if you get a water view room) are amazing but I'm afraid those were the only highlights. The staff was friendly but prior to arriving, I called multiple times and no one ever answered. They have one person at the desk. There is no valet parking, it is across the street and a block down in a parking garage. There are ice buckets in the room but you have to get ice from the front desk. The restaurant closes at 9pm and the "room service " is ordering from the restaurant. The items on the menu in the room were not available when ordering at the restaurant. I stayed in a Queen room and it was small. There was no counter space in the bathroom and it had a half glass door on the shower which led to water all over the floor. There was not much space to open my suitcase, no luggage stand available. The TV kept retrieving signal and the door had a gap in it so all noise in the hallway came through very clear. It was a clean hotel and it is nice (I'm not saying I wouldn't stay here again) but I definitely expected more from a 4-star hotel.

Had high hopes based on the location and previous reviews. Didn’t live up to those expectations. This place has almost zero amenities and majority of the staff is rude.

Starting with the staff, you don’t even get an acknowledgment. Not even a “Hi, how can I help you?”. The lady genuinely stood there. Asking for anything is like pulling teeth and you’ll have to ask because they don’t give you anything upfront. Like many chains they also stopped cleaning rooms unless you ask which goes back to the point above, it’s awkward even asking, and I ended up just asking for different towels.

The rooftop terrace is closed which was initially one of the draws here for me. Online this wasn’t published. It was said to be open to hang out, but then it was blocked off. I don’t get it. Their “continental breakfast” truly consisted of maybe 5 of the same muffin, some granola and orange juice/water. There wasn’t even cups for the drinks twice so I stopped checking. Is anyone even monitoring this? My shower water kept shutting off, and water pools at the ledge which in turn goes out into the bathroom floor. Can’t avoid it because it’s a rainfall shower which is a neat concept, but executed poorly. There’s also not even a working TV guide. Maybe that doesn’t bother others but I was here 7 nights for work, I had plenty of down time.

The fee you pay for amenities here is laughable. WiFi and a “gym”? Can’t count the breakfast because it was non-existent. The 4 star rating is generous and I’d assume that was based on when it first opened. It’s minimally staffed here and the staff that is present is very off-putting. It’s only my second time in Seattle, but staying at a Hyatt property last time was a night and day difference.
