In these Kona rentals, each room is decorated with Hawaiian plantation charm and includes a partial kitchen, eating area, cable television, queen bed and private bathroom. Enjoy the outdoor patio, and if you like, have a barbecue. If your eating out, down town Kona is only a 10 to 15 minute walk where you will find beaches, shopping and restaurants. The property is built an open air, island style design. This means most rooms have screens and shutters for windows. The ocean breeze brings in tropical smells from the coast right to the room. We even have a room with an outdoor shower.

Kona Hula Girl is just up a the hill from the traffic & bustle of Kona. Peaceful, clean and beautifully kept grounds with 5 pleasant studio suites each with lots of screened windows for those lovely breezes, pay laundry on site, and a nice patio/barbecue area. They provide some coolers, beach chairs and boogie boards for guests to take to the beach, as well as beach towels. Proprietors Dean and Sherri are lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

As always, Dean and Sherri are the best hosts! Dean is the friendliest host and always greets you with a smile and asks how your day is going and is very knowledgeable about the local things to do and see.
The rooms are very clean with plenty of room for a couple to comfortably lounge around between excursions around the island. I think any room that you stay in would more than meet your vacation expectations!

Thanks, Randy and Laila

We were very happy with our choice of accommodation. Dean the owner was very friendly, polite, relaxed, and ensured we had all our comforts and requirements available. We were in Kona when hurricane warnings were happening. He boarded up all the windows just in case, but ensured we were happy about this. The building is very new, very clean, a lovely breeze at all times. Quiet location, even though a main road is at the front. 10 minute walk to the main town, tourist areas, farmers market ,and ocean front. Barbecue area good. Our privacy was ensured, could hear no other "people noises. Dean lives upstairs,

Dean and Sherry are really superhosts. Dean was so helpful in many ways!! We stayed in the Garden Room because we wanted to be able to sit outside. This room has an outdoor shower that can be reached via the toilet.
Nontheleless we would recommend this house only to people who can live with the lack of privacy. Because of the shutters you practically live outside, with all the noises from the other guests. We heard all of what was said above us and all the noises from the birds (in our room, the noisy street was no problem). So even if everybody had respect and moved or spoke carefully, we did not really feel free in this house...what also made us unhappy was the fact that the kitchen sink doubled as a bathroom sink and all the washing and shaving had to be done in the face of the one sharing your queen bed. We are used to have privacy doing these things. So everyone who is not so picky as we are and more accustomed to camping should have a good time in this house on the hill, in easy walking distance to the town. And who does not need a stove for preparing meals as there was only a microwave, a coffeemaker and an electric tea kettle beside a fridge and freezer.
I would have liked to rate this house between average and very good but could not do this.
Summarized: wonderful hosts, poor accomodation. We paid the lowest price of the 5 places that we stayed in on the islands. And that price was justified. Good for others, not for us, sorry!

I booked this place for a week after reading the good reviews on tripadvisor but it wasn't the right place for us. After the first night it was very clear that we were in the wrong place according to our needs but due to the fact we paid in advance we didn't check out and we stayed for the rest of the week. Our studio was extremly small and we even had difficulties in finding the space for our siutcases. There are no glass windows so the room is very noisy and if there are other guests in the room behind you, you surely depend for sleeping in their good sense of being polite and not to wake you up very soon in the morning or late in the evening( what happened to us). A lot of light filters and even in the very early morning we hadn't enough dark for sleeping. In the room there isn't a kitchenette so if you want to cook something you need to go in the garden and use the burner of the barbeque. The door and the nets aren't very sealed so bugs can go in and some of them are quite big and disgusting. We certainly needed something different and we didn't enjoied completely our stay in Big Island.

We stayed here for 3 nights and were somewhat disappointed. It seems that this place is a good value for the money, but we didn't feel like were on an island. This home reminded us something you would find in the midwest. There are no "lush" gardens or sounds of the ocean. This is just a vacation rental in a residential subdivision. Location is pretty nice, but the house is so close together to the other house, that every morning we could clearly hear every word from the construction workers & owners of that house, as I am sure they could hear us. It was literally 20 feet from our window. Windows don't have glass, just shutters - this is great if you have an ocean front house, but it doesn't quite work for this house - you really want some privacy, especially when 4-5 families are sharing one house and there is another house so close. Other than that, everything else was great - very clean, new house, has fridge & microwave... the only problem is the lack of "island feel".

We stayed as a couple in the Aloha room, which is on the second floor and borders the road. The quality for the price is pretty unbeatable, which is why I give an overall excellent rating. The room was very nice and clean, comfortable, with a few basics like a mini-fridge, microwave, and basic dishes (even wine glasses!). The sink is shared for the bathroom/kitchenette, so the space there is sometimes cramped. The room did have an A/C unit, but we never used it - the ceiling fan and open windows was enough. The road can be loud while trying to sleep (occasional motorcycles/scooters are the worst) so earplugs recommended if you're a light sleeper. The birds are also noisy in the morning, but that's part of the island charm! :) The property is a walk-able distance to the Kailua-Kona restaurants and bars, although we found that generally the town lacks in walk-ability (few side walks, inconvenient road layout). The property is up on a hill, so the walk back up in the sun will make you sweat just a little but is good for stretching the legs. We walked back several times after dark with no problem, I'd recommend carrying a flashlight to stay visible to vehicles since the last stretch has no street lights. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and even lent us some fins for snorkeling. They do also have some beach chairs and boogie boards available, as well as a nice guidebook library near the laundry area. I would definitely stay at the Hula Girl again if returning to Hawaii, and would recommend it for those who are looking for an inexpensive stay near the town and don't care so much about the fancy details of a resort or vacation rental experience.

It's on a main road with all night traffic plus there is heavy construction across the street. Nice welcome and lovely room. Only our Aloha room had A/C and you must leave one window vented for it. One sink doubles for kitchen and bathroom which is awkward. They provide beach towels and boogie boards. Mini frig, microwave and coffee pot. No breakfast supplies.

I stayed at this place in October 2013. My flight was cancelled for the first night and had to rearrange my meet up time which was no problem with Dean, one of the owners. Dean showed me around the property, offered guidance on where to go including a wonderful map that I used even after I departed. The property is easy to find and within walking distance from most of the shopping district. It is however, up a hill which is no problem to walk back to, unless you did a lot of shopping in which case I would say to definitely use a car or bike.
The house itself is adorable. I stayed in the tiki room upstairs which had a cute kitchen with appliances, and cutlery, etc. Large bathroom with a little closet/vanity area, and living and bedroom area. I loved the wrap around windows with shutters. What a beautiful view!
Other ammenities were the barbecue area and a little shaded private nook further out to sit and chill. Having laundry available was great! Dean also showed me his favorite guide book which was available to read during my stay.
I did have a few neighbors, and with a few exceptions, I barely heard anything above a mumble.
The best part was that Dean was super nice and offered me a ride to my next stay since I didn't have a car rental. I also realized that I was refunded for the day I didn't get to stay. How is that for service??? Hotels would never do that!
I recommend them for anyone who wants a more laid-back feel and doesn't need the posh extras you would expect in a resort atmosphere. I liked it because it was more private, affordable and had the space to make meals. Felt cozy and homey! Will definitely stay there again!!

For us the Kona Hula Girl is the perfect accommodation on Big Islands sunny west coast. Two years ago we stayed in the Tiki Room, a small studio upstairs with a great view – we liked it very much. This time we chose to stay in the Garden Room downstairs with an outdoor shower and private terrace. This studio offers a little bit more space. We stored our big suitcases in the closet. There is a washer and a dryer you could use (both with coins) and a good free WIFI. We love to use the BBQ and chatting with our hosts Sherri and Dean – two very nice people. We were so happy that we met again. Dean gave us boogie boards and told us where we can find the best beaches for boogie board rides or snorkeling. It is only a short walk (10 minutes) down to the main street, the farmers market (open every day) and many restaurants like Bubba Gump Shrimp. You do not find a real kitchenette in the studio, but it is good to make breakfast or a salad but you cannot cook a meal. The studios are very unique with open windows (no glass only grid against the insects). Kona is definitely the best spot to discover the Big Island west coast. We highly recommend this accommodation with the best value for your money. Everything feels and looks very clean and inviting. Thank you so much, Sherri and Dean, we will definitely come back on our next trip to Hawaii.
