Randomly looking for a staycation and ended up booking a deluxe room on January 1st after being suddenly cancelled on short notice by saridana villas sanur on new years.

Grand Kesambi in Kerobokan was near alot of local food, which was actually great since we dont usually come to this area.

Check in and out took a bit long, and needed to make a 200K deposit upfront. Later noticing the minimal staff was the case. This place is actually huge, more like a Housing with lots of room (standard, deluxe) and small 1-2bedroom houses (villa) with a private pool.

Staffs have to go around using shuttles.
It may have been great in those early days, with full team staff and everything new, but now, maintaining a facility as big as this must be hard.
Therefore...when we entered the room,( which they just have prepared) their was smell coming from bad odor from the cleaning service mixed with the smell of cabinets and room itself like its been long empty. which we had to then open all doors and stay outside for a while to let be neutral.

They clean everyday, and were polite and friendly and all.
I dont blame them, they must all have been working so hard.

The kitchenette is basically just a bar with only 2 cups for making hot drinks with out any teabags or coffee given. There was a refrigerator which was working well. You may borrow spoons and plates. You can also order goFood or grabFood if youre lazy to go out, but at night you must walk to security station upfront to get the food.

Parking car in front of our room was convinient.

Lack of trashcan, just 1 small bin inside bathroom for that big of room.

Noisy customers (groups)from the villa just behind our room since we are sharing the same Wall.

If we were to try again, maybe try their villa with at least 4 people. Other than that, deluxe room was just OK.

OK.....so.... I had read a few reviews before arriving..most of them relatively negative so my expectations were not at a high...however...I was presently surprised and while the Grand Kesambi is not a 5 star resort ...that’s OK because I didn’t pay a 5 star tariff.

My Scoopon deal represented good value in my opinion.

COMMUNICATION - The Reservation Staff answered my emails promptly and fully answered all of my pre- arrival questions.

AIRPORT PICKUP - 5 star...driver was waiting for us and was easily identified plus he spoke and understood English and was in general very helpful.

CHECKIN - Very efficient with everything explained and the Scoopon voucher system fully explained along with some guidelines and what could and could not be provided via a voucher.

ACCOMODATION - Deluxe Room 3001 ... very clean, great linen, good size fridge, excellent aircon and everything seemed fresh and best of all everything worked the way it should.

HOUSEKEEPING - we requested that every day the room was cleaned etc before 10:00 so we had confidence that when we got back to the room each day our room was clean and everything had been replenished... well done “housekeeping”

MEALS - whilst we mainly ate offsite the meals we did have were quite good and the venue was clean...we did not do the buffet breakfast instead opting for the al a crate option which proved to be a good start to the day enjoyed in a quiet peaceful environment- the buffet venue is close to the main road and is noisy whereas the al a crate option is consumed at the poolside restaurant...lunch and dinner on either the Scoopon voucher menu or general menu provided good alternatives and we found the portions “just OK”...the best part...ice cold small Bintang Rp.36000

LOCATION - if you just want to eat three meals a day, drink some Bintang and laze around the pool all day then The Grand Kesambi is the place for you...it’s peaceful and relatively quiet through the day...if you want to do anything else .... be prepared to travel some distance through heavy traffic...we are both in our 60’s and couldn’t find anything of interest to us in close proximity to the Grand Kesambi apart from walking the backstreets of Kerobokan interacting with friendly locals for a couple of hours one day.
We used the daily Free 10:00am shuttle bus to Seminyak square and from there we used Kura Kura bus to venture into the he major tourists centres of Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua but be prepared for a slow slow slow journey as the traffic in Bali is now reaching the ridiculous stage...in fact if you are relatively fit you are better off walking along the beach from Seminyak to Legian...if not get a 1,3 or 7 day pass on the Kura Kura bus and enjoy the air conditioning and free wifi onboard.
When we were done for the day we caught a Blue Bird Cab from Seminyak Square back to the Grand Kesambi for between AUD $3 and $4 depending on traffic...Uber is also and option...if you are game !

WiFi - Below average for Bali...very slow most of the time and on several occasions during our stay we lost the internet entirely for several hours...but might have just been our room location ?

POOL - absolutely perfect ... warm, clean, and large for the size of the resort...on most occasions I was the only person using it as the villas all have their own pools.

SUMMARY - The Grand Kesambi is a relatively new complex, it’s clean and friendly staff create a good atmosphere but it is also relatively isolated.

If you are on Scoopon deal just remember... you get what you pay for...don’t expect 5 star cuisine on a 3 star budget !

I stayed at the Grand Kesambi for 10 nights in a superior room. It’s a brand new resort with a fabulous swimming pool. Incredibly quiet so the perfect place to relax.

Being in Kerobokan, it’s a ten minute taxi ride to all the action in Seminyak. Taxis are cheap- $5 AUD from the hotel to Oberoi St & Seminyak Square. Not many restaurant options close to the resort itself within walking distance. The resort does offer a shuttle but the times weren’t set & it wasn’t always available. This is an area for improvement as consistency is important.

My room was lovely. Ultra modern, two choices of shower heads & plenty of fluffy white towels. Housekeeping were amazing & the room was spotless. The tv was wall mounted & large but I would suggest a few more English tv channels. The choice was far too limited. Also, the safe had no instructions & wasn’t bolted to the wall. Someone could just carry it out of the room!

There was no information folder about the resort in the room so that needs to be addressed promptly. The phone did not have any guide either- not even the simplest things like how to call housekeeping or reception. A bathrobe in the room would have been useful too.

The staff at the hotel are fantastic. They are friendly, helpful & positive. I enjoyed talking to them each day & are the resort’s greatest asset. Thank you Ayu and Babung!

The area in which I think the resort needs to improve the most is the restaurant. It was very hot in there & fans need to be installed. Prices were reasonable but the portions at dinner time were very small- child size even. I wasn’t impressed with one of my chicken curries-it had dodgy pieces of chicken & bones in it. Toast is on offer at the breakfast buffet but I was charged for (frozen) butter-how ridiculous! Fruit should be part of the buffet each day & perhaps some cereal too. Dishes should not be left open without a lid as this is a hygiene concern with flies landing on the food.

Would I return to the Grand Kesambi? Probably not. It’s a bit too far away from the shops & restaurants for me. Perfect for people who like to escape the hustle & bustle or spend plenty of time in a modern, air conditioned room.

Breakfast for Westerners - mediocre. Staff didn't even know what cereal was??? But for what I paid for the room I am not complaining. Gym - shocking. Cross Trainer & Bicycle no power. hard to move. treadmill OK & multi function machine cable kept jamming. The gym stank as I imagine the sweat did was not cleaned off any machine with antiseptic. If I left door open & still open in morning the smell was gone. Hotel & Pool fantastic. Staff great & restaurant meals excellent. It is out of the way but as I had a motorbike it was ideal for me. Would I recommend this hotel. Yes

I am not one to normally complain about small problems but after our experience here I felt obliged to let others know what we encountered. We booked a 10 night Scoopon package for two adults and upgraded to the 2 bed pool villa as we wanted an air conditioned living area which the 1 bed villas don’t have.
The booking process was smooth and communication with the resort was good during the booking process. Arranged for a pick up from our Seminyak hotel at 12:00 rather than the airport as staying there first.
Pick up service was great, driver was waiting early and spoke good English. Arrived at the resort at 12:30 and was advised that our room wasn’t ready yet (not sure why as the resort was quiet but fair enough as check in time was 14:00).
Checked in to room 503 around 14:15. Found that the villa didn’t have a living area air conditioner (which I had confirmed they did in prior e-mails).

503 problems included (this was by far the best finished room of the 3 we stayed)
-dirty floors
-poor workmanship (tiles, grout, paint etc)
-broken latch on living area sliding door (repaired same day)
-some small roaches in the cupboards
-second bedroom toilet no flushing away correctly and was un usable for solid waste
-water leaking somewhere in ceiling above timber deck
-once AC was installed 240v wires were just pushed into the wall socket openings without a male plug installed. Must have run out of plugs.
We went to see reception to enquired about the missing AC. Advised that the rooms were still being finished and AC’s installed. They said they would move us to another room with AC but it wasn’t ready yet (presumably installing the AC) Approx 18:00 they advised that the room was ready but the pool wouldn’t be useable until the next day as it was yet to be cleaned. Staff came and assisted with luggage to villa 502.

502 problems included:
- floors dirty
-pool was filthy swamp water with frogs swimming and laying eggs in it (they did warn us it couldn’t be used until the next day)
-poor workmanship (tiles, grout, paint etc)
-living area sliding doors poorly fitted/adjusted with large gaps allowing insects inside
-hot water ran out quickly
-leaking toilet rinse hose in 2nd bathroom
We stayed in for one night and after leaving the living room lights on while at dinner returned to find a lot of insects inside. Advised the staff of issues the next morning and maintenance staff worked on during the day including trying to clean the pool. When we returned in the afternoon staff were still working on but many issues so they asked us to return to 503 as the AC was now installed there. We asked them to clean 503 floors again which they did but still had to go over them again with a towel as not really clean.

After a few days a section of ceiling fell out from the eaves above the pool deck, staff offered to move us again but we declined and asked that they just clean up the mess and leave the gap in the ceiling which they did. When we returned found that they had collected the large pieces but not cleaned up effectively on the deck or in the pool. Reception advised and again staff came to clean up. 90% clean this time.
2 days later more ceiling had fallen out around the pool and timber deck area. Staff moved us into room 506 when we returned from our day trip late in the day.

506 problems included:
-shower drain not draining at all in main ensuite. Had to bail water out of shower with towel into hand basin.
-shower drain very slow to drain in 2nd bathroom (could not leave shower running)
- poor workmanship (tiles, grout, painting etc)
-hot water stopped working on the last night which we didn’t even bother to report as didn’t want to move yet again
-ensuite door couldn’t close
Advised reception in the morning of shower drain problems. Returned in the evening to find nothing had been done and I had to open drain grates myself to rectify water blockage to have a shower. Next morning reception asked how the shower drains were and seemed surprised when I told her I had to fix myself.

All of the rooms we stayed in had similar problems with poor build quality. Leaking fixtures, gaps around door and window frames, doors not adjusted, missing grout, messy paint jobs etc. 503 seemed to be a higher standard of finish with largest pool, perhaps meant to be a display villa?
All of the kitchens were scarcely equipped with just 4 large and 4 small plates, 2 tea cups and 4 sets of cutlery loose in a drawer. Kettle and a fridge. No cooking gear, no glasses, no mini bar contents in the fridge, no dishwashing liquid, sponge or tea towel.

The restaurant was like a sauna with no air movement at all. Just needs a couple of decent fans installed. Food was nothing special and the portion size was pathetic but it was a package with 2 daily meals so couldn’t expect much. Don’t go there expecting great food.

2 laundry’s within 5 mins walk of resort with very cheap prices.
Resort is around 15 mins and $3-4 by taxi from Seminyak square. Take a resort business card as drivers struggle to find it on the way back. Nothing to do, see or eat (unless you want to risk roadside food) within walking distance of the resort. One bakery was nice about 20mins walk up past the school.
Resort pool is very nice. Restaurant wait staff were excellent and two of the guys spoke very good English. Staff were generally very friendly and most spoke some English.
The staff are there best assets. The 2 bed villas unfortunately seem to be poorly finished in comparison to the older villas and hotel area.
Management need to learn how to deal with problems. At no time did a senior manager make any attempt to speak to us to discuss the issues encountered which I would have been more than happy to assist them with making a hit list which they could have benefitted from. We were there during the eruption and at one stage we were 2 of only 4 guests staying there so they weren’t busy.

This is an absolutely stunning place for an enjoyable stay on bali. Everything is close by (if youre not afraid to take a taxi or drive scooter by yourself) - beaches 10 minutes, canggu, kuta, seminyak 15 min drive.

We have been here the 2nd time and are more than happy that marco still runs this lovely place. He and his staff will give you a hand with everything and takes you out for some balinese food if you are interested in "bali lifestyle" and dont want to spend every evening in the more touristic places at the coast.

We will be back for sure - marco keep on doing that great job !

Cheers Bjoern & Julia

Mowkett thank you for your comprehensive review - it was really enlightening - so far most of the reviews on the Kesambi have being tending toward negative ratings. We travel to Bali at least twice a year and have been doing o since 1986...so we have a fair idea of the varying standards that can be experienced...and like you I always do a review at the end of the stay so future guests have some prior info.... I would hope that my reviews are honest, fair and helpful...your review was certainly that...thank you ! The cleanliness and plumbing problems you encountered are unacceptable in Bali in 2018...I am sure that Tourism Minister Arief YahyaI would agree. We are due to stay in a Deluxe Room from the 18th of FEB on a 10day Scoopon deal - we have used 7 Bali Scoopon deals over the past 3 years and have generally found them good value for money - it is disappointing to read this one might be our first bad experience... (1) Where did you eat most of your meals ? (2) Does the "Resort" offer a shuttle service and if so what times and where to ? (3) What is security like at the resort ? (4) How much for large or small Bintang at the resort ? (5) Any other tips you can share with me prior to our stay ? I post reviews on Tripadviser, Expedia, and Google - to give future guests as much information as possible - you might want to also consider sharing your experiences on these platforms... I hope the Kesambi Management Team are taking your (and others) review comments seriously and acting on the feedback reviewers provide as social media and reviews now play a major part in the decision making process as to where you are going to spend your $$$. I hope can write a "positive" review on the Kesmabi at the end of February...stay tuned !

Afternoon, Apologies for the delayed reply, I did try to reply from Japan but didn't have any luck with our internet connection over there. If you did receive my reply then ignore the below as it should be the same info. 1) We ate the two supplied meals a day at Kesambi, normally B'fast and Lunch. Portions were very small (even for my Japanese wife) and limited choice from the Scoopon menu. They did a buffet B'fast on a couple of days if they had enough guests but it was also fairly basic and not what you would expect from a 'resort'. There was a bakery about 25mins walk up past the school which was not bad so we got a few roles etc from there to keep in the room. Most dinners we went into Seminyak to dine at one of the restaurants in there. 2) The resort did offer a shuttle service. Supposedly twice daily (drop off only to Seminyak square area) but we did have one day they had no driver so couldn't offer. Times were 10:00 and 14:00 departure from the resort. 14:00 was a bit early for just heading in for dinner so most afternoons we just got them to book us a taxi around 17:00. 3) Security was excellent. There was a guard at the entrance and another moving around the resort 24hrs a day to the best of my knowledge. They seemed to have workers staying in a back block of accommodation with a lot of scooters coming and going in the morning and late afternoon. That may have been why they had the roaming guard on? 4) Sorry I am not a drinker so couldn't tell you the alcohol prices. The couple of meal items we purchased were probably a bit more expensive than you would expect for Bali. 5) There are two laundrys within 2 mins walk of the resort, walk out the front and turn right, on the same side of the street. We used the second one as it looked a bit more professional. Both were very cheap compared to in the centre of Seminyak. Bakery- walk out the front and turn right, walk to the end of the road past the school and turn right. Bakery is another km or so down the road on the opposite side of the street. Good coffee and breads etc, opens at 07:00 but not much on the shelves until after 08:30. Estimate 25mins walk from resort. Traffic is crazy around the school. Motor bike café- Walk out the front and turn right, approx. 5 mins walk on same side of road. Not great coffee but it was OK and got you out of the resort. Convenience stores- Two shops within 5 mins walk of the resort. Massage- two shops within 5 mins walk. We didn't try as we had a couple of included ones at the resort (in room as they apparently haven't finished there massage room yet) Food- 'JFC' across the road and 2 mins walk to the right. Quite a few roadside stalls if your game but I wouldn't risk it. - If you head left out of the resort and walk around 35 - 40 mins towards Seminyak you come across a small hole in the wall pizza and not too much further start getting to some more western friendly restaurants Taxi's- It was around $3 - 4 each way in a taxi to Seminyak. Take a business card from reception as it has a small map on the back of it. Taxi drivers have no idea where the resort is when coming back.
