Nestled between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Water Park boasts a prime location favored by many travelers for its proximity to the Smoky Mountain National Park. However, guests have called out the resort for its high costs and unexpected fees, detracting from its perceived value. Cleanliness is generally satisfactory, but the atmosphere and room conditions often disappoint, with reports of outdated, poorly maintained spaces. Service quality also falls short, with numerous mentions of unresponsive staff and disorganized check-in procedures, casting a shadow on the resort's mixed amenity offerings.

We stayed here as part of a tour package. A family of 4. 2 adults, 2 preteens. The staff was nice and friendly. Some were obviously more knowledgeable than others (painfully so). I'm guessing staffing may be an issue as it is everywhere else in the country right now. We were in an updated one bedroom grand suite for 4 days 3 nights and it was very nice. It had a full kitchen, full sized dining table, living room with sleeper sofa & gas fireplace, and king bed in the separate bedroom. There were 2 full bathrooms and the master bath had a jacuzzi tub and shower. It also had a balcony off of the living room with a table that seats 4 and 2 rocking chairs. We explored the property to check out the resort activities. The zipline was closed the entire time. The mini golf was self serving with equipment out for you to grab and play. The putters were old and worn out and the handles were falling apart. There was a sign that asked for people to share equipment because it was limited. They advertised smores at the picnic area and that never happened. We were given free Waterpark passes as part of our tour package and when we went, the slides were closed. It has 2 showers in the women's room and no changing spaces apart from bathroom stalls. The lighting is weird. Its all blue and makes everything look teal/blue - including you! I would have been more upset about the slides being closed if we had paid the $24.99/each non-owner fee. But since we were in there for free, it wasn't that big of a deal. However, I thought about that long after because if we were owners and if we happen to be there for that one specific week with the slides being down, the zipline being closed, activities being canceled, and even some bars/restaurants on property being closed I would be very upset. Especially if its the one week out of the year you get to visit...AND Especially after being told HOA fees are nearly $1k a year!
As I said we were there on a tour package so we did meet with a representative and they did try to sell it to us. We never felt pressured. Although we were very firm and did explain that while the resort is nice, we tend to travel all over the country so we weren't interested in buying at the resort. They offered the option to buy the getaways package but their packages were terrible and did not compete with the experience we have from booking our own travel around the country for years. They offered a few options and we simply declined. No pressure.
To sum it up, the resort is beautiful and the staff is lovely but it all needs some work to be better. If you enjoy Tennessee it could be worth going back to for its location but beware of the pricing, availability, and amenities being closed down.

This Westgate property is beautiful. The views are amazing as it is located overlooking Gatlinburg. We stayed in a one bedroom unit that had a large living room, bedroom with a king sized bed, a jacuzzi tub, washer and dryer, and a very large bathroom. The balcony was small, but held 2 rocking chairs, 2 additional chairs, and a small table. The elevator in the building made the 3rd floor location a non-issue!
The room was spotless upon our arrival. The resort is following strict COVID precautions so "in unit" housekeeping is not available. Fresh towel, linens, etc are delivered to the room upon request and left outside the door secured in a bag.
The only negative we found was that there is only one restaurant on the property. It has limited hours and is not open for breakfast. We intended to prepare food in our unit. Fortunately, there was an excellent grocery store about 10 minutes away.

Bottom line: Average. If you couldn’t find a better deal elsewhere for your vacation(I’ve stayed in many good/nice hotels in the area over the past 8 years) and you will keep your cool to say NO to the aggressive timeshare selling tactics during the 3 to 4 hour mandatory tour meeting, then you’ll be okay. First the pros:
*Great location in Gatlinburg
*Large units with full kitchens vs hotel s
*If lucky and your unit doesn’t face the street you could have great mountain views from balcony
*A few different activities are available without leaving resort at extra cost: Waterpark for example(free for resort owners)and some other free like mini golf, heated pools/jacuzzi or small zip line(closed in winter)
The cons:
*Just like any Westgate resort, the high pressure timeshare selling tactics start as soon as you arrive and end in 3-4 hour tour meeting. Be strong and don’t fall for it (prices start $20000 up to $100000 plus) for one or more weeks per year depending on unit size. Nowadays with internet, AirBnB, VRBO, etc there are plenty of choices worth the try before becoming a slave of the timeshare system.
*Your personal concierge and management will treat you well until you decline to buy their fish. After you decline you are downgraded from VIP customer to average Joe. Ours (Austin is his name) tried his best even after our decline to buy. SUGGESTION: Make your appointment for the tour towards your last day of your stay that way you will be a VIP for most of the time.
*Although Westgate is the largest employer in the area, it is suffering from the current great resignation tsunami and it is greatly understaffed. Probably didn’t take enough good care of the employees financially speaking. Typically a hospitality business issue.
*We couldn’t get a maintenance person to solve a kitchen sink issue in 7 days which was the length of our stay. The excuse was understaffing.
*We also attempted to change apartment from higher floor to first floor due to wive’s knee issues. We were promised the change after tour meeting. After we declined to purchase timeshare a manager named Jocelyn said that we had no chance to move units.
*Attempting to get extra shampoo, soap, towels or toilet paper could table two days. Unless you go to Lobby and ask for it. Doing it at night during winter with freezing temperatures could be a daunting task or simply impossible to do. Plan ahead.
*Our unit had nice view but it is dated (attached pictures)
SUMMARY: You still can enjoy the property without buying but things can become bittersweet if you don’t plan ahead.
Hope this helps. Happy New Year.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. While we're happy to hear that you enjoyed our convenient location, brilliant resort amenities and spacious accommodations, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience of the sales staff. It is definitely not our intention to make you feel pressured in any way from anyone on our staff; however, we do offer the opportunity to all of our guests and owners to take a tour and with that, receive certain incentives, with no obligation to purchase. Again, we apologize and truly appreciate your feedback. We hope that you will give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations.

Arrived on January 26, 2020, with an owner at 5:30 pm. Dropped the owner at reservation location because the parking area was completely full and you were told by attendant to keep circling until you could find a spot. This check-in took until 6:20 pm. We drove to unit escorted by our guide. The guide let us into one of or three units because the keys did not open the other door to the other units. She said she would find out about the keys and get new ones sent up. At 7:45 pm a maintenance guy knocked on door with more keys and these did not work on door as well. He said he would return with keys. At 8:45 pm the owners daughter went to front desk area to get new keys after multiple text to numbers given. The daughter returned at 9:15 pm and the keys did not work on door either. The daughter then called a number the lady had given her and finally after directing to go to other end of unit and using outside door entry was gained to all rooms. The main excuse given was the facility was short staffed because of a snow storm on Christmas day and multiple staff had called in seriously. Seriously, door keys do not work because staff called in? In addition, the rooms were short of supplies, soap, towels etc. For the amount of money owners pay this was really bad customer service and not a good way to start out a week vacation.

I am owner at Westgate past 17 yrs. This year I added a studio at additional cost to travel with another couple. I presently own one bedroom deluxe. And received studio next store. The shower in the studio was at below chest height ( I am 6'1"). I inquired about shower height they explained they were at full capacity , mind you I reserved this 11 months out. They manager that hands out room stated " you got what you payed for". My reply was yes I would like for my friend to be able to wash his hair. Then her reply was " maybe you should of bought higher up the mountain". I do realize I own one of the less expensive unit. But don't try to sell your self as a 5 star resort. Another item you cannot open the drawer in the one bedroom deluxe because it hits the fridge. Then lady also went on to say shower head is hung at the standard . I told her no, we owned a studio at the beginning and then upgraded. Just sad to see people with poor customer service and quality of the units going way down. This trip was also to buy more units with my friends , but that has type of customer service we are rethinking at this point.

Our family stayed at Westgate Smokey Mountains during New Years. The check in process was quick and easy. The suite was clean and had one of the best views. See attached picture. The distance to Gatlinburg is about five minutes and ten minutes to Pigeon Forge. So your really close to both towns. We didn’t have time to use the water park due to so many other things to do. It did look really nice.
Our kids did brave the cold and use the outdoor hot tubs and heated swimming pool every night.
We saw staff all the time on the property including security. Made us feel safe.
We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for first class accommodations for a fair price in the Smokey Mountains.

Be warned...the online photos reflect newer units. We were unfortunately unaware of this and traveled 8.5 hours to unpack in a dark musty, mildewed older unit with no view. When half of our family had allergic reactions to the room, staff came in and sprayed air freshener in the same room that my kids were trying to sleep in. They offered to come back the next day with an Ozone air purifier (adding we needed to vacate the room for at least 2 hours to complete the process), we left the room for the recommended time only to find they never came back with the air purifier. We ended our first family vacation since COVID a day early, due to poor room conditions and lack of response from the facility.

One of the biggest mistakes we made was buying into Westgate in Gatlinburg, Tn. We were told very many lies about what we would get for buying this timeshare. You pay the money to buy it and then you keep paying more fees to stay there. The maintenance fees are very high! We let family stay there in July 2020 and they had problems. People at the water park were intoxicated and rowdy and throwing balls etc. and almost hit there young boy. They reported it and security was suppose to take care of it but they went back later and they were still there and doing the same thing. Should not allow drinking in the water park area with children being present. The wife went to the spa and she was charged over double the amount of what they told her the price would be. Now have to try and get it back. Prices of food are way too high. They should not let people who are not staying at the resort pay to get into the water park. If you haven't been to a sales pitch meeting do yourself a favor and just don't go.

We wanted to visit Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for a few days and agreed to a presentation that included 3-night accommodations. The unit we were provided was a 1-bedroom studio with a full kitchen. The bed was very comfortable. However, the pull-out couch mattress had stains. I doubled up the linens to cover. The unit was not prepared for us as it should have been. There were no towels, no hairdryer which was remedied with a couple of text messages however, we found an empty water bottle and spoon under the furniture which was not taken care of even though it was relayed to the front desk a couple of times. The biggest drawback to the property is parking! If you arrive back to your unit after 9pm, goodluck finding a space anywhere close to your unit. There are not enough spaces in front of the buildings for even one car per unit. Finally, the views are spectacular since the resort is on the hill however not all units have a view...guess what? Our unit had no view, ground floor, one window in the bedroom with a view of a retaining wall. Hence, I did not buy anything from Westgate

This was our first visit to Tennessee and we are so thankful we chose to stay at the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort and Spa. We have been involved in resort ownership for over 25 years and the Westgate Smoky Mountain ranks as one of the nicest resorts we have ever stayed at. It compares favorably to Grand Lodge on Peak 7 in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Our concierge, Leigh Ann, was a pure delight. She showed us around the property and provided us with information about the owner's breakfast, dinner, and BBQ. She answered all of our questions about the resort. Her personality was bubbly and at the same time sincere. She treated us like family and made us feel at home at Westgate.

Our 3 bedroom unit was spacious, 2700+ sq. ft. We had 3 kitchens, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 fireplaces, and 3 living rooms. The rooms were nicely appointed and the views were fantastic. Our unit was located in building 5000, which was high on the mountain. The newest units (presently being built) look fabulous with the new layout. They would be perfect for a family get together.

We enjoyed the infinity pool and the 9-hole Putt-Putt golf course on site. The indoor water park was closed for maintenance the week we were there.

The resort is centrally located, so the attractions in both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are within easy driving distance. The new road going to Gatlinburg makes that drive so easy and quick.

Since it was off-season some of the restaurants offered BOGO meals, which was a nice benefit.

We will definitely try to bring the family back to the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort and Spa. All of the employees were so kind and considerate. I want to commend everyone at this resort on their superior customer service. Thank you!!

All I know is they have changed the room type names. Our Deluxe is a large room with balcony and large tub in bedroom. Standard is very small with neither of these things. The pull out bed takes up the entire living room.
