Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great location, very handy for everything. Some reviews mention noise but we were on the 3rd floor and no problem at all, happy to be in a city centre location. The apartment was perfect with plenty of space and very well equipped. Particularly impressed that there were dishwasher tablets, washing machine capsules and so on, often things that you have to buy a whole box of. Loved the way that there was a key code for outside and the apartment as meant we could go out separately without worrying about keys. Would definitely return.

Loved our three nights in the Sonder Witherspoon. Half way between a serviced apartment and a hotel only 8 minutes walk from Reading Terminal Market. Beds (including the sofa bed) are really comfy. Air con is strong, water pressure great and having the luxury to wash and dry your clothes is awesome. The apartment is fully kitted out and is the perfect base in Philly. Special mention to the guy on the desk who replaced our batteries in the remote control!

I don’t know what we are missing, because our experience was so different from the majority of other reviews. The location cannot be beat and the beds are super comfortable. But everything beyond that was terrible. The common spaces are in poor shape and the 2 bedroom unit we were in - 414 - was in horrible condition. The space itself was comfortable but literally every surface in the entire unit was dented, torn, scuffed, chipped, etc. Photos attached. It needs a major refresh and should not have been rented out by Sonder. And the area is super loud both at night and during the day. The noise machines do help but do not drown out the significant street noise into the early morning hours on the weekends. Also, information provided through the app messaging was not accurate. Due to prior concerns noted on TripAdvisor about noise, I contacted Sonder requesting a high floor and was told we were reserved in a 7th floor unit. The day prior to arrival, we learned we were on the fourth floor and got the run around about why we were moved. Also, to get to our unit, you had to go through a door marked exit which made these units seem disconnected and an afterthought. Not sure if maybe these rooms were added after the fact, and not properly renovated. I really wanted to love this place but it was a total disappointment.

Comfy bed and all the necessary amenities in the kitchen and bathroom. The room provided a noise machine and ear plugs, but fortunately, I didn't need either as the noise was not an issue. This location is close to shops and restaurants on Chestnut so the location is nice. I would not advise traveling solo after dark very far in this area.

Very professional and clean. I love how well stocked it was with dishes. I was visiting a friend for the holiday and we were able to cook in for one of the nights I stayed. Only downside is not really a fault of the company. Downtown is very noisy and you can hear cars blasting their radios or reving their engines.

Nice, clean hotel. Well stocked kitchen, very comfortable bed with memory foam mattress. Only criticism is you need to reserve off site parking. Unloading luggage was tricky, there isn’t an marked unloading zone. We had to park halfway on the sidewalk on a very skinny street. Location was close to everything and no car is necessary. We brought our bikes and that worked well.

Stayed for 2 nights and had a wonderful stay! Super spacious accommodations, plenty of room for our family of 5 to sleep. Everything was clean and nicely maintained. Nice touch providing earplugs since you are right in the thick of the city. Location was perfect…easy walk to most attractions we wanted to see as well as easy access to public transportation when we wanted to get to the baseball game! Tons of great food options super close by as well.

I've stayed in quite a few Sonders by this point, but the Witherspoon may be the single most well-located: Philly's quite walkable in general, but the sheer number of sites accessible within less than a 10-minute walk is incredible. At least for the time being, it's also an incredible bargain: even an average three-star hotel anywhere in the Center City vicinity can cost 50% more. That said, the property has at least a few issues. It's quite literally around the corner – TWO corners, actually – from a wide variety of restaurants & bars, and the Witherspoon is easy walking distance to the Gayborhood, Rittenhouse Square, shopping along Chestnut & Walnut Sts., and all of Center City's much revered historical sites. (That said, the block it's on has no retail businesses and is quiet, but you may encounter a few panhandlers and unhoused people in the hotel's vicinity – though OTOH that's unfortunately the case throughout most of the surrounding area.) Unfortunately the property has some of the same problems I've encountered at other Sonders. For reasons that elude me, Sonder uses what I assume are the same, exceptionally firm mattresses in each unit. My specific unit includes a sofa shown on Sonder's website, but what you can't tell from the photo is that it's nearly entirely upright – and has no throw pillows, or movable pillows of any time. Even using pillows from the bed, the sofa was too uncomfortable to sit on for long. Definitely unlike the units shown on their website, the one I was assigned was on the fourth floor (out of at least 12) and faced an interior courtyard, leaving it with nearly zero natural light. (The windowless bedroom had nearly none, aside from the small amount emanating from the living room window.) My unit was one of those that had a ton of minor issues that weren't sufficient cause to request a change, but are definitely a problem in the aggregate. Traditional hotels use dark *and* patterned carpet – almost without exception, unless they have wood or concrete floors – but the bedrooms at the Witherspoon have light beige carpet. Even without a window in the room, multiple large carpet stains were plainly visible, as were scuff marks in both the unit and throughout the property. A few things simply didn't work. An annoyance at many or most Sonders are the seven-character PINs required for both the entrance as well as the units. (Good luck getting inside after 9pm if your phone's dead & you can't remember the PIN!) While the Witherspoon supposedly allows you to sync your phone to your unit's lock with the Sonder app, it never worked properly after repeated attempts. Neither did the coffeemaker, oddly enough, nor could I clean up the resulting mess since "kitchen essentials" apparently excludes paper towels. (Units have dish towels, but I didn't want to ruin one with coffee stains. I made do with toilet paper - oh, and that was because there were only three tissues remaining in the included box.) Further, a few of the amenities listed here aren't actually available. The hotel is accessible 24/7, but definitely not *staffed* all the time (or even half the time). There's a human front desk clerk for a few hours each day, but aside from that, the "concierge" and "24-hour front desk" are entirely virtual (and not locally based). My unit had no desk or work area – only a small, two-seat breakfast nook with armless chairs that are horrible for WFH purposes. (I was there a week and ended up working in bed most of the time, for want of other spaces, including the previously mentioned couch. Even a co-working space of some sort would've been welcome.) To be fair, a number of the building's limitations have nothing to do with Sonder: this is a building constructed at the end of the 19th century, after all. By necessity, a few rooms have odd layouts, and deep "light wells" like the one here (meaning its interior courtyard, except it doesn't have an *actual* courtyard at bottom - only what looks like HVAC equipment added in modern times). Also, Philly is one of the oldest large cities in America, and the Center City area was built out long before the advent of the automobile, so many Philly streets only have one lane of traffic along with a lane for parking or loading, which is the case for Juniper St. in front of this property. Still, I can't deny that the Witherspoon is an exceptional bargain, even with various minor problems, and as noted its location is pretty much perfect if you're looking to have most of Philly's sights within either walking range or inexpensive rideshare-trip range. (Parking is an epic hassle, however – and quite expensive if you want to park in a secured garage – so I'd advise against bringing a car unless you need one to travel outside the city.)
