Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been staying here since the hotel opened. I came by myself to visit my son. The location is very convenient. I love hanging out in the lobby drinking excellent coffee in the morning. The room was very clean. I wish the hotel would purchase better pillows (not totally smushy.) The hotel is seeing some wear and tear but for the most part it's still an excellent place to stay. It's nice to stay in an independent hotel with flowers and art in the lobby that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. We will be back.

Hotel, location, food and conference/meeting facilities (and staff support for this) was good. Regular staff service level was was lacking. Server at breakfast was not a happy employee and asked each of us to leave a tip when our conference coupons clearly indicated service included. Several of us had room servicing challenges. We had each put the hotel's 'Pls Tidy Up' signs on door. It did not necessarily happen. We called guest services upon returning at 5PM. When on business, I appreciate returning to a tidy room so I can comfortably work. The 2nd time we called, went for dinner - nothing happened. On leaving front desk staff processed my incidentals without looking me in the eye, asking about my stay nor wishing me a good journey. This is basic politeness between humans, especially in a nice hotel. Some service tune-up is required for prices charged.

We just stayed here for one night to drop off my son at a camp. The room was clean and well maintained. I find that there is generally no room to put any of your toiletries since there is no countertop space. The adjoining restaurant (called the Co-op) also was a mixed bag. Juices are anywhere between $8 and $12, and the fare is of mixed quality. We ordered one latte, the juices, mushroom toast, breakfast sandwich, and a chicken sandwich which all together came out to $100. That is just a lot. But the most aggravating experience was the valet At $43 a night plus tax, expect some promptness. We waited well over 30 minutes after we called ahead.

This is a very basic hotel in a nice location. But go there expecting what you would expect from a basic hotel, as in Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn. EXCEPT at those hotels you would have glasses or cups in the room, a coffeemaker in the room, mini frig and microwave and often continental breakfast. None of these. And ALSO expect to pay top dollar for that sub basic experience. The closet was so small that a long dress had to hang out of it on to the floor, we are talking about a one foot long rod. Allow a half hour to get your car out of valet, each time we had that experience, and once even after that we went to the desk and they hadn’t even gone to get it yet. $35/day valet charge. I would never recommend this hotel. If all you want is to come in the room, watch TV, and go to sleep, and use the toilet and shower for $290/night, you got it.

We have stayed at the Study a number of times over the years and have been happy with our stay. However, this time we were very disappointed with our stay and have decided that we will not stay here again. The Study’s location is great - that is its biggest asset. I think it has become very complacent and is coasting on its past laurels. For instance, there are no amenities in the room other than shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. We had to ask for glasses, body lotion, a bath mat which never did appear, water which made its appearance one day and not the next; an extra towel. There are no fridges or coffee makers in the room although coffee is available downstairs in the lobby until 10 AM. The carpet outside the bathroom needed a thorough cleaning and the walls in the bathroom definitely needed painting - lots of black marks. We had breakfast there every day we were there; I think $18 for avocado toast is a rip when all one gets is a piece of toast with a smear of avocado and egg on top with lots of roasted potatoes which is a waste…one day when we were having breakfast our server must have run out of dishes - he was clearing away our plates as soon as a person finished even though the rest of us were still eating. The Study no longer offers good value other than its location and it is very unlikely we will stay there again. At $309 a night not including all the taxes which are levied on top of that amount, it is definitely not good value.

The room was attractive in a minimalist way. It really wasn't really ready: there were dried flower petals on the floor, and a trundle bed, with the furniture misplaced. We were offered a different room though. The phone by the bed didn't work. One of the lights by the bed didn't work. There were no cups/mugs in the rooms. There were no charging units on the desk. There was no refrigerator. No coffee maker. There was very little place to put toiletries in the bathroom, and no hook to hang a toiletry bag. The closet was only a few inches deep, allowing only for a few things things to hang, and only one sided (one side was an ironing board). The beds were comfortable. I thought the pillows were fine, but my husband thought they were too soft. Temperature control was good. The chairs were not comfortable, having no back support. Shampoo/conditioner/body wash was provided and were nice products, that didn't have too strong a fragrance. I liked that the door to the bathroom was a real swinging door rather than a sliding door that many hotels have. There wasn't good ventilation in the bathroom. There is a night-light that can be turned on in the bathroom (too bright for our use, but a nice touch). There was a window that could be opened to allow outside air into the room. It took a long time to get our car pulled up in valet parking, about 20 minutes, so plan for this if you have an appointment or reservation to get to. We were almost late for our dinner reservations. The breakfast at the restaurant was excellent. Breakfast was not included in the stay, but there was free morning coffee/tea in the lobby area. Interesting books and displays in the lobby. The avocado toast was pretty tiny for $18 (a single slice of bread about 4" x 4", a poached egg and a thin smear of avocado), but other orders were more what I expected.

This is the best hotel in Philadelphia!! I stayed there for work, for three nights this past week. We had a conference at the hotel, so I got the full experience. The rooms are spacious and lovely. The staff is friendly and always willing to go the extra step to make things even more wonderful. The location couldn't be more perfect - a few steps from 30th Street Station, and right in the heart of the Drexel/Penn neighborhood. I highly recommend The Study for your next trip to Philly!

Do not book this place if you need a handicapped accessible room that you can enter by yourself or if you have a feather allergy because they don't seem to pay attention to their reservations or notes. I will never stay here again and am glad it was only for one night.

The only complaint is the pillows were the absolute worst pillows i have ever had in a hotel stay! I woke up in horrible pain and i was up practically all night long even after i asked for more pillows! For all the glam decor some pillows wont break the bank!
