The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection, is a beacon of historic charm and comfort, according to a multitude of travelers. While the classic atmosphere is well-maintained, some visitors suggest that parts of the hotel could benefit from refurbishment. Guests often enjoy a tranquil stay, yet light sleepers might be disturbed by occasional street noise. The lodging receives applause for its cleanliness and attentive service, although there are reports of isolated rude encounters. The rooms, praised for their quietness and historic allure, have also faced criticism for size, temperature issues, and cleanliness concerns. Despite the central location being a hit for its convenience to city attractions, some find the hotel's pricing, particularly for breakfast and additional amenities, to be on the steeper side. Amenities generally receive positive feedback, but some guests have noted malfunctions with gym equipment.

We stayed two nights at the Algonquin Hotel a few weeks ago. This was our second visit and we had a spectacular experience. We stayed in mid February. As soon as we got home I booked our next reservation. We did the same after this visit.

The hotel is modern and up to date but respectful of its history. The Blue Bar has power outlets with USB connections under the bar in front of the stools. The bar/dining area is high ceilings and quite comfortable.

We upgraded to a suite, which was larger than the room we had last time. The bathrooms are very comfortable too. The beds are great. The room was quiet, although it is impossible to keep NYC noises out late at night. The New York Times will be delivered each morning, if you ask.

The hotel has a $40 a day resort fee, which can be spent in the bar or restaurant. We had drinks on both evenings. Glasses of wine are about $18-22. They have a menu of bar munchies with excellent potato chips. I think they are made on site because they are thick and not salty.

Hamlet the hotel cat is the hotel’s most famous resident. He wanders the lobby when he feels like it. He sleeps in the front window on a favorite shelf.

They have a specialty coffee machine in an alcove off the lobby. These are free for guests. If the machine is out of service for cleaning, they have a large canister of Lavassa coffee as a substitute.

The staff is genuinely friendly. They smile and make a real effort to get you a taxi. The doorman ran to the curb at the end of the block to flag one down.

Are there negatives? Drinks and breakfast are on the high side. But this is midtown Manhattan, so it’s expected.

I FINALLY found the hotel that I vibe with the best in in all my visits to NYC! The Algonquin is IT. So much so that following a work trip in September, I rebooked in November for a personal trip. Loved it both times!

If you're a writer or have any interest in literary lore, you'll love this place. I for sure felt the presence of Dorothy Parker and her cohorts at this lovely boutique imprint. The hospitality at the front desk, for me, was unmatched (Shout to to Maria, Marisa & Patrice!)

In November for my theater trip I arrived early but was immediately recognized as a Marriot Bonvoy member and return visitor. You get a dining credit here, so I took advantage of what turned out to be a very good breakfast! My patience with getting checked in paid off because I was upgraded to the absolutely gorgeous Noel Coward suite.

The location is also perfect -- just far enough removed from the Theater District and Times Square to not get a lot of noise or huge crowds, but close enough to get where you need to be fairly quickly. As a solo woman traveler it's important to me to feel comfortable and safe and I definitely felt that way here. Good vibes , great staff and management, great food and drinks (overpriced but not exorbitant by Midtown standards + the Marriott dining credit helps), and really lovely, CLEAN rooms. Definitely feels more like an apartment than a cookie cutter hotel room. There's also a gym stocked with the good, glass bottle Evian. I had the opportunity to interact with housekeeping and even they were super friendly and helpful. If you're lucky, you'll also see Hamlet the Cat running point in the lobby.

The Algonquin gets me and fits me. I'll definitely be back.

Stepping into The Algonquin Hotel is like entering the very heart of New York City’s vibrant culture. This historic gem offers a unique charm that transports you to the center of all that NYC has to offer. Every aspect of hospitality is executed with detail, from the warm welcome by the bellmen to the professional service at the front desk.

The Blue Bar is an ideal spot for a delightful meal or a refreshing cocktail, perfect for unwinding before or after a Broadway show.

The Algonquin stands out not only for its exceptional team but also for its rooms that are both clean and spacious, reflecting the hotel’s storied history. Despite its prime location on West 44th Street, it offers a sense of privacy and tranquility just steps away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Exploring New York on foot becomes an adventure with The Algonquin as your base. The hotel’s rooms, dining options, and strategic location are truly remarkable, and the team consistently goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is extra special.

Here now, disappointed.
1. No sheet on bed, front desk says they don’t do top sheets (so basically you just have a comforter in a sheet type duvet cover)
2. Complimentary coffee in lobby broken-reported to staff they argued it worked but brought me two coffees and charged me for them.
3. No ability to control temp in room. Room was 71 upon checkin, changed thermostat to 68 (like it cool to sleep) upon checkin , left and came back hours later- still 71. Turned off and room went to 75, I don’t sleep well in a hot room.

Love the history of this place but have come to expect more from an Autograph Collection property - stay somewhere else in NYC

Don't let the updated design of the lobby fool you, this hotel is a disaster!

It's clear the ownership of this hotel has just put lipstick on a pig in the lobby, as once you get to your room is clear this is no way up to Autograph Collection standards. I understand this is an historic building and the small size of the room really didnt bother me, but what did was the worn out mattress (all you feel are springs in your back, I had the worst back pain in the morning), threadbare rugs, banged up trim, peeling paint and wallpaper, shredded lampshades and curtains, stained furniture, abysmal water pressure... need I go on? I attached a few photos.

In addition, as many others note here, the elevators are dreadfully slow and you hear every little noise in other rooms next to you and above, as well as the hallway noise. There is no coffee maker or kettle in the room, so you have to go use a machine in the lobby, which of course was broken during my stay, so your only option is to leave the hotel and go somewhere else or wait 20 minutes to be seated in the lobby lounge and pay $12 for black coffee from a chafing pot.

There is no justifying the rates this hotel charges given the value of the product it offers; paying over $750 a night in fees and taxes to wake up at the Bates Motel with a sore back was a nightmare come true. So think twice before booking here, there are a so many better hotels in the immediate area (heck, even on the same block) that offer a superior experience for the money.

The Marriott Group have done a reasonable job in updating this historic hotel in an excellent location in Manhattan. Given the historic constraints on the building I am not sure the guest who want larger rooms and high speed elevators are ever going to be satisfied. But the rooms are clean, functional, and of the high standard of a quality chain hotel. Traditional touches of the old hotel have been preserved from the old mail chutes to the latest incarnation of the famous hotel cat (Hamlet VIII). The lobby has lost a lot of its charm. It also presided over by an eccentric waiter who rivals his equivalents in Paris for rudeness. One paying guest – not us – had helped himself to the freely provided coffee and had sat down to read his iPad when he was told to move because he was occupying a "premium" table. The same fate befell another woman who had the temerity to sit in a booth. All of this in a deserted bar with a grand total of six occupants. Management needs to take a view on whether a premium price for a room entitles you to use some social space in the bar area for free or whether you will be "moved on" by its hyperactive Maitre d' who has firm views on revenue management.

Checking into The Algonquin feels like walking into an upscale family BBQ. All the staff says hello and treats you like a regular they’ve known for years. As a father of 5 young kids away on business, one staff member really stood out to me and that was Sharda at the reception desk. 2 weeks away from her due date and this girl is not only still working but she is training a new hire with an infectious smile! What a legend. I really hope that The Algonquin and Marriott BV know what they have in her bc if you ask me, that level of dedication deserves a family vacation on the house. Best of luck Momma!

The Algonquin is no more.
I used to work nearby and stop in at the bar and lobby for a cocktail and to soak in all of the historic charm.

It is now whitewashed. Every ounce of the beautiful dark wood is painted white or gray and is littered with LED lighting. Gone are all of the cozy old chairs tables couches and dark elegance.

I shed a tear and left.
Better not to go back.
They should have changed the name too, that would have at least given the Algonquin a proper burial.

Such kindness from Dana Massey and Patrice Correa! They made our trip such a joy! What incredible assets they are to this historic hotel!!!

They helped we weary travelers with data regarding the glorious painting of Dorothy Parker and kindly answered all of our endless questions.

Professional and efficient, we relied upon their wisdom and found, to our delight, that Ms. Massey and Ms. Correa knew the details of all we sought to learn- they gleam with efficiency and so very generous with their time.

On a very crowded Saturday afternoon, streets teeming with ex-pat Georgians intent on voting for freedom for their country - lines 4 and 5 hours long, we were caught up in their spirit of of patriotism and liberty - these two women offered a such a peaceful rapid from heart-pounding excitement amongst fear and worry that right wing madness doe Russian dominance would rue the day.

We recommend anyone seeking shelter from crowds, hustle and bustle, stop in to the Algonquin and enjoy a glass of wine - toast Dorothy and her pals - and seek advice from Dana Massey and Patrice Correa - job most superbly and generously accomplished with great grace and wisdom!!!

We are repeat visitors to the Algonquin; it’s a true gem of a place tucked away right off Broadway. The staff is always great and this stay was no exception as Maria and Patrice welcomed us back like valued guests. Highlight is how nicely the property balances old school NY charm with modernity. Only area for improvement may be the bar program which is slightly $$$ for the quality and even location. All said, this is our ‘go to’ spot when visiting the Big Apple.
