Built in 1926 as a residence hotel, the original Surrey was home to many of New York's most eccentric celebrities. JFK, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, and other famous faces who recognized the allure of exceptional, discreet service. In re-creating The Surrey, we collaborated with acclaimed interior designer Lauren Rottet of Rottet Studio—to maintain the integrity of The Surrey’s history while modernizing New York's most intimate address. Rottet's inspiration was a New York City townhouse passed down through the generations. The Surrey is New York City’s only Relais & Chateaux boutique hotel, where discreet service allows guests to retreat from the public—and keep a low profile in an otherwise high profile lifestyle. The Surrey is a residential haven and luxury Upper East Side hotel getaway where guests access and revel in what makes New York City special—without compromising calm personal space.

If you're looking for a quiet, comfortable hotel on the Upper East Side, this is a very good option to consider. The staff at the front desk is friendly and helpful. There's a diner, 3 Guys, just around the corner on Madison. The rooms and bathrooms are large and the beds are from Duxiana and very comfortable. The shower pressure is amazing! There's a subway stop about 3 blocks away at 77th and Lexington.

The things that keep me from giving The Surrey 5 stars are small. We were there for 5 days, and on only one did we receive both washcloths and hand towels. Other days it was just one or the other. One day we left the room at 10:15am, came back at 3pm and the room hadn't been made up yet. The bed pillows could be much better. The edges of woodwork and furniture are starting to show wear. Small items, but at this level of hotel, that's what sets places apart and there are a lot of high end hotels to choose from in NYC.

The Surrey was sublime in their service. The room was large, well appointed and the service staff efficient and timely. The Upper East Side location was new for us and exceeded our expectations for location, nearby restaurants and shopping. We are walkers and the proximity to the park was an important consideration in our selection of location.

Everything about the stay was great. The quality of the room, the superb customer service, everything! The one thing I was disappointed about was that there was no coffee in the room. That may be OK, as long as there is coffee in the lobby. While there was coffee in the lobby, the coffee was removed at 8:30 AM. I was not able to partake.

We need our coffee!! Please consider investing in some small coffee machines in the rooms or leave the coffee out in the lobby until 10:30.

This was our first stay at a hotel in the upper east side. We were looking for a relaxed stay and asked for a quiet room away from construction noise and higher up to stay away from street noise as far as possible. We got a corner room facing the front of the house on the 6th floor. Not exactly quiet, so we were happy to have brought ear plugs. The room could have been cleaner and in better condition. Loved the shower water pressure on the first two days. On the third day the hot water alternated between luke warm water and hot water every 15 seconds. The window in the bathroom was a bit drafty, which made getting out of the shower not the greatest experience in my book. We've had room service on the third morning. On checkout we found a lunch charge from a previous guest on our bill and we had to ask to take it off of our room bill. All in all we have had better experiences with hotels on Madison Ave and Midtown before. Liked the close proximity to the Metropolitan museum! Not sure it was worth the price, though.

This is a very smart hotel that I booked for a special New Year's holiday with my husband and daughter. The room was a good size having two double beds, although it was lacking in wardrobe space for three people. The staff on the front desk and concierge were polite and helpful, as were the doormen. However, behind the scenes, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing... During our stay, a couple of minor hiccups occurred and were adequately dealt with (small souvenirs thrown away in error by housekeeping, and noise from the room above until 3am). This we can cope with as it can happen anywhere. However, the most concerning issue was only discovered after we left the hotel. They had pre-authorised more than $3,000 on my credit card during our stay, even though we paid for the room in advance through a travel agent. I contacted the hotel and someone in a back office position apologised for their error explaining that they had not realised that the room was prepaid during check-in and assured me that the funds had been released upon checkout so I should contact my credit card company to find out when they will clear (7 days). They didn't mention their error during checkout and although apologetic, this is not very helpful as the funds are still blocked on my card. Another instance of the hotel's failings was New Year's Eve. We were invited to a New Year's Eve party in the hotel bar, both formally in writing and verbally. We mentioned that our daughter was a teenager, and the staff told us, it's fine for her to attend as long as she is accompanied by you. So at 11pm, we left the restaurant across town where we'd had dinner, to go to the hotel bar, only to be told by the bar manager that our daughter wasn't allowed in as she is under 21. This despite the fact that we had taken her into the bar earlier that day and the previous day for drinks and food. Apparently, this rule was a one-off for New Year's Eve that the bar manager had failed to communicate to the hotel staff, who had been actively encouraging us to attend. We explained how disappointed we were and how it had spoiled our New Year's Eve, but there was only token sympathy from the hotel. For all it's sleek marketing, upscale PR and bottles of fancy gin in the room, this hotel is not as good as it thinks it is.

We stayed at this hotel 8 years ago and loved it. Went back for New Year's Eve getaway and were very disappointed with how neglected the hotel has become: decor is dated and not an "elegant oasis", carpets in hallways were dirty, our bathroom had rust stains, moldy grout and chipped paint, room desk looks like it's from the 80's and the lobby decor is sad/cheap. The check in staff neglected to let us know that coffee and tea would be served in the lobby every morning so we got from Cafe Boulud next door for a ridiculous $10 a cup! The hotel has no business being part of the Relais & Chateaux brand. Definitely won't be going back and don't need to when there is a plethora of great hotels in the city.

I've enjoyed previous stays at the Surrey so I prepaid $3,678.03 for a reservation for June 11th on January 12th. Nancy Padolina (Director of Reservations & Distribution) notified me on June 2th that they had suspended operations due to COVID-19. I immediately requested a refund. She eventually responded on the date of my reservation that she would "follow up on this request with our Financial Team." After numerous phone calls I have received no response other than an email on the date of my reservation suggesting that their advance purchase policy meant that I had lost all of my money. This is despicable, especially for an establishment that continues to advertise flexible cancellations due to the virus. Be VERY careful!

Second time I stay in this hotel, this time I stayed there for 2 weeks. Housekeeping service was terrible even though they offered me dry cleaning to apologize, service overall was poor, spa overrated. Almost a 3* hotel and not a 4*, will never stay there again.

We celebrated my youngest daughter’s wedding at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park. Our travel agent booked a room block at the Surrey including two suites. The hotel is fantastic. From the moment we arrived we were treated like celebrity guests. The rooms are large and very tasteful especially the suites. It is a short walk to the Boathouse and since we needed to go back and forth for the rehearsal, pictures day of and then after the reception, being able to walk made everything effortless. The staff is very well trained and very accommodating. I highly recommend this hotel.

The room was tired and not thoroughly clean (used slipper under the desk.) We were told the room would be ready for check in at 3pm and it was almost 6pm before we could get in to it. Room service food was average $27 club sandwich used deli turkey!) Bathroom was tiny! The arms of the desk chair were damaged (multiple marks from people trying to push the chair under the desk.) This used to be our favorite Manhattan hotel, but really under impressed with it now.

We usually fly into Laguardia. Only about 30 minutes when no traffic. Easy to get to the airport since The Surrey is on the Upper East Side. We take Uber and it's usually between $30-40.
