If you're on a budget, but would like to enjoy the privacy of your own room, coupled with a good downtown location in the center of Manhattan, look no further than Seafarers International House. Located right next to Union Square, this cozy hotel provides comfortable, air conditioned private rooms, with shared bathroom in the corridor. There is free Wi-Fi and a TV in the rooms. The staff is very friendly and even though there isn't an in-house restaurant, there are numerous good options for eating out nearby (for all tastes and prices).

Union sq metro station is a couple of minutes walk.

I cannot stress enough how amazing the location is for the cheap price of the hotel! A bargain stay in an otherwise very expensive area of New York!

Very unusual place, as the location and building and room prices are good, but the rooms are pure 1950 utility. So depends what you are looking for, as the location, rates, and service are very good, but not an updated or new hotel if you are looking for upscale or extensive hotel services. I should note the property also serves a critical mission as an outreach mission for visitors, seafarers, and asylum seekers.

Excellent budget option for New York in a mid town location. However the rooms and beds are small (the mattress had seen better days) and restroom and shower facilities are shared. Choice of three good bars on the door step and a large supermarket nearby. Great subway and bus links from Union Square only a block away.

I stayed here about 3 years ago and had a pleasant stay but my experience a few days ago was just the opposite. Our room looked run down and need of much repair. Cords hanging off or pulled from the wall, base boards missing and my biggest issue, very poor heating. The room was freezing so I complained and was given a space heater. It warmed the bedroom somewhat as long as we kept it constantly running. Not okay with me. I complained again and was told I could leave and receive a refund. I ended up staying because most other places were booked or way over my budget. One good thing was the room appeared to be clean. Sadly I will say, I probably will not be staying here any longer.

We stayed at the Seafarers International House for 6 nights and were more than happy with our choice. The hotel is excellent value for money. We paid $99 per night for a double room with shared bathroom & no hotel tax!!

The bedroom was very clean, tastefully decorated and a comfortable size with cable TV. The shared bathrooms were again very clean and always available and if you want to pay extra for ensuite you can. The rooms were also very quiet (always got a good nights sleep) and the staff were friendly.

This hotel is in a perfect location - right near public transport and in good walking distance from nightlife (bars, gigs, restaurants) and shopping. Its in a safe location and is far more chilled and less hectic than mid town. Mid Town is only about 20 mins away by metro.

So if your looking for somewhere cheap, clean, and in a brilliant location then we would definately recommend the Seafares and International House.

Location: 2 short blocks (5 min walk) from the 14th and Union Square station which has multiple MTA lines (L,N,Q,R,4,5,6). Near Walgreens, Food Emporium Supermarket, Whole Foods, and Union Square.

Hotel: 11 floors (higher up equals less street noise). Simple lobby with free WiFi. Free baggage check. 25 cent coffee. Friendly staff. 24 hour front desk security. 2 slow elevators. Mostly adult guests, no partying college students. Quiet and modest.

Rooms: 10 rooms per floor. 2 toilets and 2 showers. Never a line for the bathroom. Rooms include A/C and radiator. All rooms have twin beds. Small flat screen cable TV and phone. Some double rooms have private bathrooms and a mini fridge. Bare essentials. No shampoo or conditioner. Includes soap and towels. bring your shower slippers. Beds have soft mattresses. Carpet is worn. It's simple living. Room sizes are pretty good by NYC standards. Housekeeping makes your bed and change your towels, but does not change your sheets. No bedbugs.

Costs: As of Dec 2012---Single w/ shared bathroom $106 (sun-thurs). Single w/ shared bathroom $109 (fri-sat). Double w/ private bathroom $136 (sun-thurs). Double w/ private bathroom (fri-sat) $145. Double rooms have 2 twin beds. Check in at 3pm, check out at 11am. Need to call or email for availability and reservations. No online booking. No tax! It's a Lutheran church-sponsored guest house, so room prices are not taxed. (Otherwise the tax rate for hotels is about 15%)

I would definitely stay here again. You cannot find a better deal for a low-budget hotel in NYC.

Friendly staff, quiet serene atmosphere, clean rooms and bathrooms, adequately comfortable beds with newly laundered linens, what more could you ask for? Perfectly located near grocery stores, Subways and Starbucks and Panera. We stayed from Fri-Sunday and they kept our luggage for us until we were done exploring the city. We will be back!

I just recently spent one week here with a traveling buddy of mine. I found the Seafarer's to be perfect. We paid $133 per night CAD for a room with two beds, fridge and private washroom. I agonized over where to stay for months and in the end chose Seafarer's.
We are two senior ladies but we are thrifty as well as being concerned for our safety. We had no problems at all walking and enjoying this area of NYC. We enjoyed the fact it was close to the subway as well lots of shopping in the area.
Our room was cleaned during the week but not on the weekend which their website states. We brought along an extra towel as well as disinfectant wipes so that we could manage. I did a laundry in the basement which cost $1.75 for the washer and the same for the dryer. Again brought along my own little packets of detergent.
The front desk staff was so friendly and helpful but of course it always helps if you are courteous in return. On our last day our shuttle Airlink to Newark was half an hour late but Leila was kind enough to phone them for us.
I would not hesitate to recommend Seafarer's to anyone wanting a no frills accommodation.
It was clean, safe and the staff very eager to please.
Thank you from two Canadians from Calgary, Alberta who enjoyed your City and Seafarer's very much!

I found this on TripAdvisor when looking for a reasonable place to stay in New York City and was not disappointed. It is a real challenge to find a hotel in NYC with a private bathroom for less than $250 that is not creepy or gross. This is a non-profit Lutheran organization that does missionary work for sailors and seafarers. Operating the hotel is part of the fundraising for their mission. You don't have to be Lutheran or a seafarer to stay here.

Rooms are basic and dorm-room-like with twin beds and simple furnishings. It's not like you have the most luxurious beds or towels, but everything was very clean and there was a small flat-screen TV with cable and AC. It's a safe, clean place to lay your head. We had a room with private bath for $135, although shared bath rooms are also available at even less cost. Our floor did not appear to be crowded at all. We never saw anyone waiting for the shared bath. We had a nice view from our window of the NYC streetscape.

The location is fantastic, just a few blocks from Union Square, a fun neighborhood with shopping and dining. The East Village is close and the subway is very convenient, ready to take you anywhere in Manhattan.

We checked out after 2 of 4 days because my husband's cousin invited us to come stay in her apartment. We only did it to say a few bucks, not because we were unhappy with the room. We gave them 24 hours notice and they were fine with it. I plan on making this my regular hotel in NYC in the future.

We've stayed here many times and continue to come back because of the affordability and location within the City. Located just off popular Union Square, there are many benefits of laying your head here:

Barnes + Noble one block away, open til 10 pm where you can shop, browse, enjoy a beverage in the 3rd-floor cafe after a long sightseeing day.

Several drug stores for your daily needs.

Whole Foods one block away. THE best grocery store! Three floors, the top being where you can take the food you purchased and enjoy it at a table (there are many) overlooking very-busy Union Square. We eat breakfast here every morning. Affordable, no tips and at-your-own-pace. They have a coffee/smoothie bar on that 3rd floor as well.

The METRO - the major public transportation system in NYC is one block away. A BIG plus!

There's a small dog park in Union Square where locals bring their dogs to socialize. A fun place to spend a minute or two, observing the canine social system!

Union Square has just about every retailer you can think of...either within the square or just a few blocks.

Unless you pay a higher rate, you will be sharing a bathroom, which isn't a big deal, since there's always one available within a few steps from each room.

We HATE that every time we stay here, your neighbors come in at all times of the night and SLAM their door (just inches away from yours) or the kick-stands to the bathrooms, thus waking you up. WHY DOESN'T THE STAFF POST SIGNS TO STOP THIS RUDE BEHAVIOR? Just a seemingly simple fix!

If there are two to a room (those rooms without a bath), one will sleep on a rollaway COT, which, for most, is quite uncomfortable. Kids won't mind it. Even those rooms without baths will have a small sink in their room, which makes it nice, and keeps many from monopolizing the bathrooms/showers.

There is a washer and dryer located in the somewhat-scary basement. I say somewhat scary only because there's never anyone down there, not because it's dark and dank. You don't want to send your cute 14-year-old daughter down there by herself to use the coin-operated machines, although it's probably safe. There's a soda machine there, as well as a snack machine.

There is an intermediate floor, called the Mezzanine, between the main lobby floor and the second floor. There are two computers there for your convenience. You may have to wait a while to use it, since it's a popular spot for guests.

There's always someone at the front desk, just inside the main lobby door, which is nice. I'm sorry to say the staff is not overly friendly. We're found that one particular woman is. The rest? Even though they know you (from previous visits), they can be quite indifferent. In all our times staying at this location, I have never seen a smile! This should not be the case, whether they know you or whether they don't. Though they may assist you with directions, etc., they ARE indifferent. (Note to those who run this facility . . . Can you change this?).

I hope one day they'll rid the facilty of their creepy polyester printed bedspreads. Just the sheets/blankets would be much more sanitary and look far better.

All that said, If you're looking for an affordable, conveniently-located and safe place, this would be it.
