Detailed Reviews
A mid-range hotel just across the road from the Penn St station and Madison Square garden. A stroll to Hudson Yard and the Vessel. Times Square and the Empire state Building are also within walking distance.
The reception area and staff are welcoming, try and get a room facing the front of the hotel and the higher the better for a great view over the city.
Rooms are well proportioned although the wardrobe space could be better. A walk-in fixed-head shower, no bath, was ideal. Bar soap is supplied so if you prefer shower gel then it's up to you.
Beds are large.
Breakfast is included but it is everyone for themselves especially when busy. It's a relatively small dining room and is a mixture of high stools and small square tables. There is an outside area but it is only used in the summer. The waffle maker was always popular so expect to queue.
There is no bar during winter as the rooftop terrace is closed and no alternative is offered.
The hotel's main assets are its price and location, which for Manhattan, couldn't be better.

The location of the Hotel is perfect for staying in Manhattan. It located on a quite street opposite new train station with some nice restaurants on the underground level.
Hotel offers free (somewhat unhealthy and limited) breakfast to all the guests and free coffee/tea/hot chocolate all day long (up until about 5pm).
It also offers luggage storage after you checked out for a tip.
We had AC issue for the first three nights where AC was set to OFF but kept turning itself on during the night every 5-15mins. Their maintenance guys couldn't figure out what can be wrong, so they just came in several times, looked inside it and left because during the day AC behaved at its best. These first three nights we couldn't sleep due to the AC noise. On the 4th night, my husband opened it up and disconnected it altogether so we can sleep. Not ideal but worked.
We used the gym a few times, early morning there is no one. They offer water, towels and earphones to use on the machines.
The hotel has washing machines and driers, but we haven't used them to comment. It's very handy though if you don't have much clothing with you.
Overall, we had a great stay but the nightmare of the first three nights made me very weary.
Other cons are:
1. I don't think the carpet in our room was even hoovered.
2. The tap on the sink is so close to the edge that it hard not to have water splashed all over the top while washing your hands: design flow.
3. There wasn't much breakfast for vegetarians/pescatarians, except for omelette, some fruits, occasional porridge and bread. We had enough nevertheless.

The hotel was fine. Honestly, fine. But just fine. This is a no frills property, clean and convenient but unremarkable. Staff was friendly, breakfast wasn't anything to speak of (but a nice touch in NYC). But oh my, for travelers? The location literally 50 steps to the new Amtrak building at Penn Station simply is unparalleled. Would not hesitate to stay here again the next time I need a hassle free access to the train and a comfortable place to sleep.

I fully understand and support the need for COVID precautions. But the response needs to be better thought through at this property.
Upon check-in I was told there would be no daily housekeeping service. I'm OK with that. But why wasn't there more than one day's supply of soap and shampoo left in the room? I found a friendly housekeeper who was happy to provide additional supplies, but why did I have to ask? When a guest checks in for multiple days and housekeeping isn't provided daily, why not stock the room with additional supplies? Ditto for the coffee. Duh...
I also understand the hot buffet breakfast had to be suspended. But the substitute was a joke. I picked up a heavy bag in the lobby to take back to my room. The bag was heavy as it contained a 20 oz. bottle of water. Other than that there was a pre-wrapped muffin, granola bar and a small orange without a knife to slice it. Yikes! No juice, no other fruit, no yogurt, nothing substantial. One has to wonder how much money is being saved by the closure of the buffet breakfast, and whether the hotel should honestly claim that breakfast is no longer served. What I received could barely qualify as a snack. As a Titanium member I would have expected something more, perhaps from the market shop or a voucher to use in a local restaurant. As there was no refrigerator in the room, I couldn't keep anything overnight, so I just skipped breakfast most days.
The staff here were all very pleasant and helpful, without exception, but the lack of care in offsetting COVID restrictions was most unfortunate.

Dear 1NicePerson, Thank you again for choosing to stay with us! We appreciate you taking the time to review your stay. We also appreciate your loyalty. We are happy to hear that our staff were pleasant and helpful, despite the room service and breakfast issue you experienced. We are deeply disheartened to hear about the breakfast not being up to the standard expected by our guests. While we do everything we can to ensure we're serving the best breakfast possible even with the new regulations we must follow in order to keep our staff and guest safe. However, this does not excuse the level of service provided. Please note, this is not indicative of the level of service we aim to provide our guests everyday. For this, I extend my further apologies. We remain at your service the next time your travels bring you to New York City.

I've stayed here several times in the past and enjoyed it, but this will be my last time. Disappointed especially since this was my first post-COVID vacation. It's still a convenient location to Penn Station, where I arrived from Amtrak, but things started to go downhill when I checked in. The desk clerk alerted me that there would be a $200 damage deposit placed on my credit card which would be refunded to me at check out if all was good with the room. In conjunction with that I had to sign a form pledging that I basically would not trash the room, play loud music, or give alcohol to minors during my stay. I went along with it, but noticed throughout my stay that no one either working or staying at the hotel appeared to be over 30 years old. The Fairfield was filled with hordes of twenty-somethings. Plus the hotel was visibly more beat than when I last stayed in early 2020. The room was a little chipped and rough around the edges. Finally, although I understand that COVID has changed the rules with lodging and things will continue to change as hotels open up, such as no daily housekeeping, do you really need to strip every amenity, Marriott Leadership, down to not even a pen and paper in the room and less than enough washcloths and towels that I could see through because they were so worn? Also just 2 plastic cups? The lobby looked like retro student ghetto cardboard and tape decor with cardboard taped to the floor and dining area doors. Finally, the hotel entrance is guarded by a crude key card system which was not there the last time I stayed, which makes me wonder how safe the place is. Fairfield Penn Station is looking more like Motel 6 than a Marriott brand, which I've been a loyalty member of for over 25 years. There are much nicer and civilized places to stay for adults in the Big Apple and I'm done with the Fairfield at Penn Station.

Thank you for your review. We are actually in the process of undergoing renovations for our dining area, lobby and gym which is why there are protective coverings on the floors, so as we may not scratch the floors. We had to implement a higher security deposit hold than usual due to the times, just in case anything is damaged in the room or guests add market items to their room. We installed a security system so that all of our guests and employees are safe in the crazy city that is NYC, which is why all of our guests have to use their room key to get into the building. We do have pads and pens at the desk available upon request; we no longer place them in the rooms as it was becoming wasteful because we have to throw them away after guests checkout and they mostly have never been touched; due to Covid cleaning standards, we cannot leave it there for the next guest, we have to put everything brand new in the room for the next guest. I hope that you can appreciate the fact that we are not trying to not be wasteful. Thank you again for your response and your understanding! Take care.

In case you are coming to the Penn station, this is a geographically good place. However, there is a huge room for improvement and logistics . First, COVID 19 changed the budget hotel concept. The hotel does NOT have enough cleaning service folks. The basic logistics are pretty poor. So, without any previous notes or complimentary agreement from the client, you have been suddenly places in a very DANGEROUS situation. Coming back after long working day in the city fully saturated by sick and unvaccinated people, you find yourself in an utterly low hygiene scenarios- towels are not changed, shampoo and soup bars not delivers, trash not cleaned, tea bags are not ready. So, the guest is not able to wash him/herself out. After the phone call to the lobby, you hearing back pretty weird vocabulary like: you are not qualified for the room cleaning and room service. My main Q to the administration is - am I qualified to GET SiCK, am I not qualified to wash myself down, am I not qualified to take a toilet and get a toilet paper , am I not qualified to wash my hands by a soup bar.? The price is utterly high, so this place is obviously over promised but underdelivered.

Thank you for your review of our hotel. The mask mandate is now lifted in NYC so we cannot force anyone to wear a mask anymore; there is signage in the lobby stating that if you are vaccinated, you are free to not wear a mask. Unfortunately during this time we do not have daily housekeeping service, instead they come every third day to clean the room; as soon as everything is back to normal, we will start having daily housekeeping service again. We of course can provide you with any extra amenities you may need upon request; you can either call down or come down to the front desk to retrieve the items. Thank you for your understanding during these times. Take care and stay safe.

The is my 2nd time at this hotel. I chose it based on the 2min walk from Penn Station. In July I stayed on the 4th floor. The room was dirty, there were no towels, no coffee, no amenities. Each time I brought this to staff attention, they acted annoyed. As a Gold Bonvoy member, I thought I would get a great room. The room was small, but the biggest flaw was a brick wall was the view. I returned because of the location and price.
I stayed Aug 30th to Sept 1st. Check in took almost an hr because the room was not ready at 3:45pm. I paid extra for a King size room with a city view. It appears as if the nicer rooms are higher up. The room was nice, towels and such were there. This time I did not have to wipe down the water stains and food. The room was clean.
The breakfast is the most lame excuse for breakfast. In early July it was identical food, only this time you had to put the food in a bag. Frozen oj in a carton, orange, bananas, yogurt and wrapped pastries. Coffee on the other side. Try one of the food trucks outside for a "real breakfast"
In terms of Covid 19 protocol, guests are NOT given handiest as is described. The solo hand sanitizer in the lobby was out of liquid. Some people wore masks, some did not. There was 1 very small sign regarding masks. I think more signs, particularly in the elevators would help. Also advise guests who do not wear masks to put one on.
++ right near Penn Station
++restaurants and shops are all walkable
++The price is reasonable
++the area is relatively safe, after 10pm or so, the homeless gather at the Moynihan bldg.
My stay was ok, nothing spectaculer
but, met my needs. I paid abit over $170 a night.

We are here now and we check out tomorrow after a 5-night stay. I would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly. It's about five blocks south of where we usually stay, but the extra blocks have been good for my Fitbit! The location of this hotel is fantastic. It is an easy walk up to Times Square and other midtown attractions. It is across the street from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. It also has close access to the subway. Additionally, this area is a good walking area with many restaurants and stores nearby. Macy's is a short walk away. The hotel's staff are friendly and want patrons to be happy. Our king bed room, a very quiet room, had a view towards the south end of Manhattan and Freedom Tower. We had everything we needed including a double-wide shower with plentiful shower products. The rooftop bar area is awesome during both daytime and nighttime. We visited with some wonderful people there and enjoyed spectacular views. We requested a mini fridge for our room and received one. We also requested daily service to our room and received that, too. The breakfast area is large and clean compared to other hotels and the breakfast selection was wonderful with hot and cold items and pastries, too. Additionally, the hotel staff puts out fresh ice water, coffee, and tea for patrons all day long in the lobby. This is really appreciated. I like being able to do my own laundry when we are travelling and this hotel has self-serve laundry (one washer and two dryers) for $4.00 in quarters per cycle. We would stay here again easily.

We arrived here at check in and had booked and paid for 3 rooms as a family celebration for birthdays well that soon went downhill
On arrival at check in l asked if they had received a message from our travel operator and through Marriott as l had been advised to ask for higher floors
We had 3 kings rooms
It was explained that the king rooms were floors 8-12 we were all on floor 8
One room had an outlook the others looked at air conditioning units and brick walls
The attitude was so poor when we asked about this on checking in as in What do you want ? How rude and customer unfriendly we felt we were a nuisance for asking
Breakfast well that’s if there is any ? Clearly a staff or lack of produce issue no tables to sit at rubbish everywhere ,dirty tables people asking for replenishment and being spoken to like they were a nuisance
I among others complained to reception this was not rectified during our stay after 4 try’s of trying to get some food at the buffet we gave up and had to get breakfast elsewhere each day
Then we discovered that we had been charged again for our room which has now been charged and is no longer pending on out cc account
We spoke to reception several times who were supposed to come back to us and did not
On the morning we left we were sitting in reception had to go and find the manager who just gave us his business card
Absolute shambles of customer service and communication
Such a shame the only good thing is the location
We are still awaiting a reply from our complaints which were added to our room at the hotel
How poor is that !!! Such a bad experience

Hotel is showing its age and looks dilapidated: stay is similar to some cut rate hostels in southern Europe. A lot of teens hanging around the lobby. Had to sign a waiver not to smoke, give minors liquor, engage in wild parties, or trash the room, and hotel charged my credit card a $200 damage deposit. I especially like the smell of marijuana in the elevators. Because of Covid concerns, there is no breakfast except for some packaged muffins, OJ, and yogurt. No COFFEE is provided. I've attached a copy of the waiver.
