This is my second stay at Kimpton Theta, and you really cannot beat it for location. It is perfect! The staff are Great! Friendly and engaging. Not always the case in NYC. And of course, love the Kimpton wine hour and a chance to chat with not only the staff but some of the other guests in the hotel.

It still holds true for this hotel that placing the HVAC on "fan on" for white noise solves most problems of noise from outside or other rooms. There were a couple of rambunctious kids across the hall that we could hear coming and going but otherwise no noticeable noise. Last time we had a room with the motion detector on the lights in the bathroom that went off during your shower. Either those have been repaired on timing or this room was set correctly from the beginning as there were no issues with the motion detector lights.

This time I opted for a paid upgrade to the corner room just to try it out and as mentioned in the title, not a fan. While indeed it does have a bit more floor space, it also has less furniture. I really love the cozy L shaped sofa in the regular room, so I was very disappointed when I walked in to see one very small (smaller than average) chaise lounge. If you need floor space for exercise, this is your room. Otherwise I would stick with a regular room. The biggest problem with this room was shower temperature. Being a corner room, it is the end of the line on plumbing. Apparently the hotel did not install scald guards in the shower on renovation, so every toilet that flushes or shower that gets turned on causes your shower water to fluctuate from normal to either ice or boil. So your exercise program is paying close attention to the shower and jumping out of the stream quickly! I am no plumber, but I unfortunately do not think there is a way to fix this without busting out the brand new tile in all the bathroom showers. Last time we were toward the center of the building and didn't experience these temperature fluctuations so that will be my request in the future. For this stay, we found showering at off peak times, usually really early, avoided the issue.

The rooftop restaurant is now pushed out to a July opening, so if you are Diamond level and choosing breakfast as your welcome amenity, the hotel is providing one or two per day (depending on your booking) $25 gift cards to Carnegie Diner on the next block. We really enjoy Carnegie, so it is not a problem at all, but looking forward to having an on-site restaurant.

Just as a notation for planning: This hotel is part of the trend in cash free hotels. The Front Office does not have any cash banks at all, even to make change. They referred me to the bellmen for change, but they have no change either. Personally, it seems this will be the beginning of the end of hotel tipping culture. If I have no appropriate bills for tipping, it just won't happen. I feel for the staff, but not badly enough to go wander in the cold seeking change.

Overall I really enjoy this property and will definitely return, but not to a corner room.

This is a 2 months old hotel, so everything is new. Nice rooms and a good bathroom. The one thing I did not like about the bathroom is that the light is sensor operated. When you are over 5 minutes in the shower you have to get out and move your hand in front of the sensor to get the light on again.

I stayed for 2 nights. For a hotel like this you would expect a complementary bottle of water in the room, but there was none. While checking in they told me that in the mornings they offered free coffee for guests from 7 am to 9 am at the small coffee shop in the lobby. So the first morning I ordered a cappuccino. To my surprise it turned out that only black coffee was free, so I was presented with the bill for my cappuccino. That's what I call 'penny wise, pound foolish'. Every afternoon from 5 to 6 pm there is a wine tasting. They serve both red and white wine for guests in the lobby. I had this too when I stayed at the Kimpton in Barcelona. My tip would be .... serve some small snacks with the wine .... even if it is just some peanuts or chips of some kind.

Overall a good stay, as the hotel is well positioned, the rooms are nice and sound proof and the hotel is near a subway station and near several major must sees in New York.

What I did not like was that I had to bargain for a late check out. I' m a platinum elite client. When I asked for a late checkout at 3 pm instead of noon, the representative first told me that the hotel was fully booked and only a late checkout at 1pm was possible. I took out my mobile phone and showed him that if I wanted to book a room at the hotel that day, there were plenty of rooms available in Booking.com, Agoda.com and even on IHG.com! After a few round of negotiations, the best I could get was 2.30pm checkout. Why would you lie to guests and tell them the hotel is fully booked when it clearly is not?

The Theta, which straddles the Theater District and Hell's Kitchen, is an excellent choice for a place from which to explore Manhattan.

Compared to most other places you’ll visit, the Theta is expensive, but for the quality where it is in NYC, it’s a reasonable price.

Rooms are, by the standards of newer NYC hotels, spacious. We enjoyed having a couch/loveseat with a table. The beds are comfortable. Light for reading is good. The room was clean. The mini-fridge was nice.

If it matters, there isn’t yet a restaurant on the premises.

Some pointers:

The rooms lack coffeemakers, but there is a window in the lobby at which a pleasant beleaguered fellow works. From 6 - 9 a.m., coffee is free; fancier drinks are not. The line can get long. Give yourself time to go through the line by 9 a.m. There aren’t carriers for drinks, so if you need more than two drinks, you’ll need to send more than one person.

Across 49th is the Food Emporium. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but there’s a grocery, plus an excellent deli, bakery, and even a buffet.

Housekeeping comes early (9 a.m.), so if you don’t want to be disturbed, put a door hanger out. (Housekeeping also wasn’t as good at keeping the room stocked as it was at keeping the room clean. We had to ask for things: Kleenex, washcloths.)

Ask the front desk about the hotels amenities and services. We’re used to getting a brochure that tells what the hotel offers, but didn’t get one here. We didn’t learn until the day we left that the hotel has gym equipment.

We just completed a family stay here over thanksgiving week. The location was ideal for both walking to shows and restaurants in Times Square and subway access to other parts of town. The hotel opened recently and all of the finishes in the rooms and common areas are beautifully designed. The room was very comfortable (especially the bed) and the bathrooms were very nice. Every interaction we had with the staff was excellent, especially the housekeeping staff who promptly attended to our requests (within minutes every time) and Jules at the door who gave especially great service. The new restaurant wasn’t open yet but the coffee bar and happy hour offerings were top notch. We also appreciated the grab and go. Great stay—we highly recommend.

This hotel was great! It was very clean, the staff were extremely friendly and the manager Makke was so helpful. Our cleaning girl was so patient, too. We would stay in the room pretty late doing work, and no matter what time we left in the afternoon, she would happily come clean our room. Our room was very large compared to most that we usually get in the city so we were very comfortable. It had a table with 2 chairs, the perfect spot for me to work. It also had a beautiful curtain that came in handy for my daughter. She was able to video all of her acting submissions right from the room instead of having to rent a studio. We really enjoyed the happy hour each evening with free wine and/or their nightly specialty drink. They even offered free coffee in the morning, which we never got up early enough for, but the fact that I could go downstairs when I got up to buy a cup of tea and a pastry from the hotel lobby area without having to go out was so convenient. The location is also really great, right in Times Square, walking distance to all the shows and plenty of shopping and dining options. I would highly recommend this hotel.

The person that handled the check in was arrogant and felt like he was doing me a favour. I had been requesting interconnecting rooms for days before I arrived. Then I received an email asking if I wanted to upgrade to suite for $80 more per night. I clicked yes and said I want the suite to interconnect to a standard room. The check in person called the manager who also had the wrong attitude. But there are some nice staff in this hotel. You just have to look for them. Manager told me he cannot give me interconnecting even after I had been requesting interconnecting for days before check in. If they told me no interconnecting some time ago I would have changed the hotel but they lead me on. Then manager told me suite upgrade was system glitch and he is sorry he cannot do anything with that either. This hotel doesn't have in room dining. The rooms are very clean and the hotel is new. That is actually the only good thing. It's generally like a low service offering. It's like renting a furnished and serviced apartment. Should not call themselves a hotel. At $500/room/night it's not cheap. It's next to a fire station so very noisy. Sometimes you will get face cloths and sometimes you won't. They clean the rooms at 3pm every day so if you go out early and come back to rest at lunchtime it will be in a dirty room. You have to phone to get a tea kettle and plastic cutlery and paper plates and paper cups. You have to buy milk and bottled water for your room from the supermarket. The bed and pillows are too soft. You get the impression from the staff that you must just keep quiet and stay or get out. Don't ask for anything.

The Kimpton was amazing all around. The staff was friendly and helpful, the small events and complimentary wine from 5-6 in the lobby, the design, the vibe, and the cleanliness all stood out to make it a special stay in a great hotel. The location is amazing and so accessible, but also feels like an oasis in the city with a calm lobby that smells fresh and inviting the minute you step through the doors. The rooms are spacious, beautifully designed, and crisp. We stayed with our two young children and what can usually be a stressful time staying in a hotel was made so much easier and enjoyable because we stayed at Kimpton. We had plenty of room for additional kid gear (easily fitting our stroller, pack n plays, toys), the blackout curtains were perfect, and the AC was ideal! Highly recommend!

Our 3 night stay was superb! The location is central (two Broadway shows are right around each corner) but far enough away from the chaos to help with sensory overload. There’s a subway stop across the street making city exploration simple. There’s also a grocery store across the street and a CVS pharmacy one block away. The staff is lovely. They genuinely seem to enjoy their work and to care about guest experience. When we were there, they offered a complimentary happy hour with different wines to choose from and some snacks. Drip coffee and a selection of teas were also offered complimentary each morning which was so convenient. The hotel management went above and beyond for me: I left two passports in the hotel safe and they were incredibly helpful, kind and prompt in helping me correct my blunder. The rooms are well equipped and the amenities are generous. The beds are very comfortable and the sheets feel higher end. We come each January and historically stay in a different hotel each trip to try out different spots. We will be staying at the Theta from now on.

Stayed for 4 nights as a family of 4 people in April 2024.

Pros: Good sized room with two comfortable double beds. Rooms and bathroom were clean with good power shower, powerful air con system in room. Nice reception area with tables to sit and glass of wine provided between 5-6pm each day. Great location to get around Manhattan, 15mins walk to Central Park, 20mins to Grand Central Station, 5mins to Time Square. Also close to a few subway stations to link across the city. There is a subway a couple of blocks north which runs direct to Jamaica station for the JFK AirTrack connection. Would recommend the bagel shops nearby either Hudson Bagel or Pick A Bagel for good priced breakfast.

Con: Contacted the hotel prior to staying request a quiet room, but didn't receive a reply and was ignored when requested again at check-in. Our room was on a low level floor and over 8th Ave, it was noisy all night with cars, fire trucks, coaches and pedicabs playing music! But we still sleep well in the comfortable beds after long days exploring NY. Staff were not rude but could have been friendlier and offered more help, the bell / porter staff looked more like door security and just keen to book cabs for tips than offer help or be welcoming. The Food Emporium over the street has a good selection of food and drinks but watch out and make sure you keep receipts, I was attempted to be scammed being told my card hadn't processed the previous day and the cashier had to pay a $50 bill when I had always checked payments were accepted and only spent no more than $15. I politely said I had checked payment and would check by bank account and it was left there.

Overall good hotel rooms, location close to all the sites and action. The addition of a bar would make a huge improvement and if you don't want noise make sure you insist on a room high up or facing away from 8th Ave.

Spent 6 nights at Hotel Theta. Had not previously stated here, reviews and location looked good for a hotel near the theater district we were looking for. We were in town for birthday, visit our daughter and catch a show. We arrived late after a flight from the west coast, greeted warmly at the front desk and given a great room location up off the street. The concierge, Charles, was kind enough to get us a reservation at a great Italian restaurant right around the corner.
Room was clean, decent sized with a sitting area. The only off thing was the artistic stained wall motif and headboard cut out around picture frame on the wall behind the bed which didn't do anything for the room.
The week went well, we attended the wine tasting hour several evenings which was nice after going all around the city. The location was perfect for attending any of the theater venues as we walked to 2 shows and the Ed Sullivan theater for a Late Night taping. Major subway access was very close by as well for trip directly to museums.
Would definitely stay here again, all the staff were very friendly, helpful, location great.

Drop them an email to check. My instincts tell me that it will not be open. I did have a good stay earlier this year when I was there and there is a wonderful deli one minute. Walk up eight Avenue. Just turn right when you go out of the exit. Enjoy your visit.
