Graduate New York delights many guests with its unique and eclectic decor, offering a quirky and comfortable atmosphere complemented by stunning views. Its prime location on Roosevelt Island is a hit among travelers for its tranquility and easy access to transit. However, opinions on the noise level and service are mixed, with some experiencing peaceful stays and others citing disturbances and staff issues. While the amenities and cleanliness generally meet expectations, the value proposition is questioned due to high fees and some missing features like in-room kettles.

Our family of 3 stayed overnight in August 2022. The hotel is modern, clean, well-airconditioned, well-lit, and quiet. The adorable, enormous sculpture welcomes all to the lobby. Our room was spacious & squeaky clean with a wonderful bathroom (great toiletries) and sumptuous beds. The decor is so detailed and wonderful. If you have ever stayed in NYC, you know how loud it can be. This location is near transportation (subway and sky-liner) into Manhattan and Queens but feels remote and quiet. The views from the East River to the east side skyline are outstanding. They offered us early check in and the staff was so gracious and welcoming. Our tween loved the cool factor of the hotel. We will be back asap.

Hotel, staff and amenities were amazing. The views from the room were breathtaking. Bedding was so soft and the room was so quiet - I didn't hear 1 horn honk the entire time, as the windows are triple paned. Great location and close to the Tram and the F Train. I loved this hotel and will definitely be back again!

Booked a Queen Queen room for myself and two kids (12 & 15).

Location:

Basically brilliant. The views were amazing and access via the air tram or F line metro were really easy.

Room:

Absolutely fine. Shower was a little feeble, but beds were very comfortable. No tea or coffee and bottles of water in the room were $5!

Was there for 4 nights and no maid service unless you asked which was unusual.

Food:

Only had breakfast which was “included”. This was a selling point for me as it meant we could have breakfast and then head out for the day without worrying about immediately having to find something to eat.

But breakfast was a complete shambles. Anyone used to European buffet style breakfast will be disappointed. It was supposed to open at 8 but on our first day it was still not open until around 8:30.

The included breakfast consisted of a bowl of fruit and a pastry with juice or tea/coffee. First day we got 4 pastries to share between 3 and a bowl of fruit each. The second day this changed to only being able to have one or the other. And it was one pasty each. It also took 40 mins for our bowl of fruit and pastry to come on the second day.

A lot of people were pretty unimpressed and we didn’t bother for the rest of our trip.

Panorama room bar:

Would like to say this was brilliant but I wouldn’t know. Under 21s weren’t allowed up and the lift didn’t allow you up there with your room key. Although that was not obvious.

One night (Thursday) we came home and dropped the kids off at the room so I could have a look at the bar. Went back down and asked to be allowed up (which required a hotel staff member to activate the lift). I was asked if I had a reservation and said I didn’t but was a guest at the hotel. I was told I wouldn’t be allowed up without a reservation even though I only wanted to go and see the view.

Some people complained that the higher floors could hear the music late into the night, but to be fair I was on 13, so 5 floors down, which was quiet.

Reception staff:

Very pleasant. I was allowed an extra hour on checkout time which helped and check-in/check-out was perfectly fine.

Overall:

I am glad we chose to stay on Roosevelt Island. It may not be so central but the hotel is really close to both the air tram (cable car) and the metro so access was very easy. Plus it was worth it for the views.

If the hotel sorted out the stupid issues it would be really good. But it did put a dampener on the whole experience, so that was a bit of a disappointment.

The Junior Suite was very small, hardly any closet space (as the safe and mini fridge took over half of one side), no coffee/tea in the room. I requested housekeeping 24 hours in advance as they suggested and no one showed up until 3 days later the day before we left in spite of 2 repeated requests. On day one we were told we needed reservations for breakfast (in a half empty room) so I had to have my 96 year old mum wait around just to get a cup of tea. The choices were unusual and frightfully expensive. The Panorama room was nice with a great view but again the food choices were very limited especially if one cannot eat seafood and the prices are very high: a small glass of wine $16, a cocktail drink $18. I stayed here during the window replacements in my apartment complex as I felt I ought to support a Roosevelt Island business. Never again.. This was my 3rd hotel stay in June 2022 so as a frequent traveler I was really disappointed in the overall lack of comfortable amenities and services. Needless to say the staff were not very helpful. I regret not using my numerous hotel points and staying in the city. I had planned to show off to my neighbors who were also thinking of staying there or putting up visiting relatives to Roosevelt Island but now after my uncomfortable stay I simply cannot recommend this hotel.

Room was dirty, found long hair all over the room, bits of food and dusty table top. Bathroom cabinet panel was worn down and had cracks it looked as if it would fall out any time posing a danger. They do not have a housekeeping line or numbers for specific areas of the hotel, only one number for information or request 0 but don’t bother calling them for anything, ie bathroom amenities, towels, tissue paper, coffee, tea, sugar pack as it will never arrive. I had to call them 5 times to remind them and each time a person would answer, speaking in a nonchalant manner, does not apologize and told me the same thing that they will inform the person to bring it, amazing part the same person answered twice but she did not recall I had called earlier. The towels I had asked finally arrived but it took more then an hour. The next night I had run out off coffee pods, called them and after waiting for 1 hr I gave up and didn’t bother
anymore. Female front desk staff also unfriendly and unhelpful, I asked for some information on a place I wanted to visit, she was inpatient and did not want to help. I think the thing that got to me the most out of everything is that they need to improve on their sense of urgency to fur fill guests request as right now don’t have any. I will never stay here again.

The Graduate hotel is similar to fast fashion. You wear it once and you never want to wear it again. The hotel is filled with kitschy instagramable ornaments of poor quality. We stayed on the 17th floor in the presidential suite with a sofa bed in our room. The quality of the sofa bed was terrible. A flimsy mattress bought from a cheap discount store providing you with no rest and a severe backache. No coffee machine or complimentary water in the room. No microwave, no dishes and no ice in the fridge or ice tray available. No thought was given to the comfort of the guests.

The bathroom was clean and the towels were plush. Unfortunately the water pressure in the shower was horrid.

For a hotel with over 200 rooms they had only 1 ice machine on the fifth floor. This machine never worked and was unable to dispense any ice. We approached the front desk about this several times but nothing was ever done.

The gym had no water bottles or fresh towels. The gym is built in a cramp space with one small window.

Located on the 18th floor is Panorama, the hotel’s bar. Unfortunately the sound proofing between the 17th & 18th floor is very poor. We felt we were a part of the bar till about 2:30AM at night as we continued to hear music and thumping in our rooms. Sleeping seemed to be out of the question. Around 7:00 AM we awoke to the sound of furniture or other goods being moved around in bar.

Breakfast was promised to us starting at 8:00 AM. Unfortunately when we approached the lobby restaurant at 8:30 AM the restaurant host told us they did not have staff and breakfast would not be served till 9:30 AM. When we finally sat down for breakfast at 9:30 AM the server had no idea what guests needed to be served. The server kept walking from the restaurant to the lobby to confirm with the front desk. As per the server "The restaurant is independent and the hotel does not do a good job communicating the guests needs".

For a property that tries to be hip/cool there was no food available past 10:00 PM on a Saturday night. No vending machine and no lobby market.

My suggestion, step in to take a few photos in the lobby and take in the views of Manhattan from the 18th floor bar. Step straight out afterwards and find yourself a real hotel. The Graduate is nothing more than a flimsy Hollywood set.

I want to thank Brent at the front desk for the great experience we had from the start to finish with him personally. He is also a former Ohio person that gave us the best view of the Macy's fireworks and the most excellent views of downtown Manhattan and the East river. This is one of the nicest Hotels (and plenty of space in the junior suite) in the area as we have stayed in downtown with very small rooms. This Hotel is located on Roosevelt Island with aerial tram access to the subway system. We will be back.

We read about the Graduate Hotel on Roosevelt Island and thought that staying on the island with a bit of respite from Manhattan and Queens would be nice. It is a nice location and we enjoyed our stay. The island feels like a little village. There is good access to Queens and Manhattan using the F train to either or the Tram to Manhattan. We found that parking our car was very secure and relatively inexpensive without using a valet. There are multiple places for a breakfast or luch on the island including the hotel.

We had a South facing room on the 16th floor and the view was wonderful but a North facing room or a lower floor would not give you much of a view from the room.

There are downsides to the hotel including needing extra time to get most places in the city. The room was extremely small with almost no closet space or cupboard space. There was no place to keep or work out of your luggage. There was also no hot water or coffee maker in the room (there is a refrigerator). There is also no vent in the bathroom and the heating system is very loud (we turned it off at night and that was fine).

The Graduate is in a fantastic location. The room was comfortable and clean with firm beds, plenty of pillows and fun decor. The decor throughout the hotel is pretty cool.

It was a big downer, though, to discover no coffee maker in the room. I specifically checked the website for this, and it was listed as available. Nope. To get coffee, you either have to wait till 8 when you can get one complimentary cup of what amounts to warm dishwater from the restaurant, or you have to head out to Starbucks or wherever. Also, the water bottles in the room were $5 each, which is insult to injury when there already is no coffee maker! The body wash dispenser in the shower was empty so I had to call for that. There was no list of numbers to dial to reach hotel services, though the retro phone was very cute -- I tried dialing Zero for the front desk, but was met with silence. I ended up using my mobile to call downstairs. They told me you need to dial Zero, but that clearly didn't work.

These seem like small things but they add up. The hotel is really nice, cool, hip, and comfortable. It wouldn't take that much to make it a top-notch experience. Especially when it comes to having coffee/tea available in the room. I think hotels are using covid as an excuse to strip small comforts away from guests, the way airlines do. It's too bad.

There is a subway station about 2 blocks away and the tram station is about 1 block away. So it's easy to get into Manhattan. Just depends on where you want to go in Manhattan. Expect most places to be a 20-45 min commute depending on if you need to transfer. But definitely not walking distance to much (just a few restaurants and parks).
