W hotel is conveniently located near union square where vendors set up on weekends and lively energy welcomes you the moment you step outside. CVS is located right next door fir all the travel needs you forgot to bring.
The Irvington bar and restaurant is in the lobby and they serve excellent cocktails in a beautiful environment.
I don’t know if this is because of COVID, or extra cost of electricity or the warnings about the sanitary concerns of Keurig machines but, you do have to request it in your room, otherwise you won’t be able to have your coffee in the morning in your room.

We truly enjoyed our time at this property.

The staff were phenomenal and very helpful from the bellmen to the reception the service was excellent. During check in, we were proactively offered late checkout with our Marriott status. The kind receptionist stepped out from behind the desk to hand us our key and the bellmen led us up to our room and gave us a small tour, this is truly five star and service you do not always see, even some more expensive properties. Additionally, throughout the stay any time we requested something it arrived promptly (frette slippers, toiletries etc…)

The design throughout the hotel was absolutely stunning. Marriott has obviously invested a lot of money into this property and it is evident. Beautiful modern spaces throughout that feel natural and charming in this classic building. They have definitely mastered the fine line between the building’s classic characteristics and a fresh and clean modern design. This shines through especially in the in the new living room space on the second floor. Despite not being open yet, we caught a peek and the space is absolutely stunning with the classic ultra high ceiling set above the stunning modern chandelier and bar space. Our room was brand new, again the design was beautiful throughout. I specifically liked how they actually went through with a complete renovation in the bathrooms, removing all the old fixtures. The shower was one of the best in the city and the beds were very comfortable. Nesperesso machines and real glassware throughout the room were a nice touch. The basement gym has also been completely renovated with world class equipment, divided into many spaces it felt intimate and luxurious, a peloton studio and a massage wellness space.

This is one of the best W hotels in the US its defiantly in the same tier as the Aspen and Miami Beach properties. The service and design are excellent and we cannot wait to come back once the main public spaces, restaurants and rooftop open. Currently with no on property dining options or main lobby space (living room) I think around 300-400 is a good deal and a fair price for this property, once all their services open up 400-550 would seem fair per night.

We just returned from our stay at the W in Union Square. We unfortunately visited during a brutally cold week so our hotel stay was more important than usual because ordinarily we would be out and about. The staff is amazing, from the friendly doorman right through the housekeeping staff (one person ran after me at the elevator to thank me for our gratuity! A first for me). Because of ongoing construction, there is no lobby or restaurant, and I reiterate, you didn't want to be outside. They did however, provide coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and a daily offering of pastries from Bread Bakery (fabulous). My negative review is minimal. The room temp when we arrived was 63. We were shivering under the blanket midday until Engineering arrived. There is a large new television in the recently remodeled immaculate room, which clearly states NETFLIX and other streaming channels. Two engineers PLUS their manager came up to address the issue telling me they'd be in touch in 10 minutes, including several calls down to the office. It might even have been housekeeping that told me it just wasn't set up yet. Again, it was too cold to walk about so we sorely missed watching. AirPlay didn't work either. The only other negative to an otherwise great stay is how dark the room is. Nearly no natural light in 901 and I would guess the entire stack.

I understand the “restricted services due to covid” —
Heard it about 30 times in the 5 days here. But when Covid is used as an excuse for laziness and incompetence that is basically an insult to our intelligence. The many services that aren’t available are listed clearly on a sheet they provide upon check in (definitely longer than any list you’ll find on the website of course, I assume so as not to deter potential reservations).

What I don’t get is what Covid has to do with having a basic punch list of things that need to be working to receive guests.

Examples:

1. If it’s supposed to be a non-smoking room, does it NOT smell like an ashtray? The next day they brought some sort of filter for an hour or so which helped enough to be tolerable, but the smell was too pervasive to begin with to go away completely. Should they have maybe brought that air filter in before putting a guest in that room? To be accurate: they credited $75 for that first night. A gesture that’s appreciated, but if you read on, not even close to addressing the overall low quality compared to the rates they still demand.

2. Is there soap in the bathrooms? Seriously? No soap? At all????? I heard the Covid excuse for the laundry list of things you guys don’t do and there’s no soap? And when you bring soap, should it be that cheap glycerine type that used to be on airplanes or the hotel line that’s supposed to be there? Oh the cheap glycerin one, okay.

3. Is main lamp in the room working? This is not a case of changing the lightbulb. The tall free-standing lamp was visibly structurally broken and tilted in a weird way from the middle.

4. Does the room safe have a battery?

5. You have no in-room dining service and your restaurant closes by 11. Okay, so when your late arriving guests need to find a place open in the middle of the night and just need some forks, should that be hard? Cutlery? I was actually initially refused 3 plastic forks, because their restaurant is closed and “it’s not something they provide.” Hun? I’m about to pay you guys over $4000 and you can’t bring some forks??? They eventually allowed it as long as I came to get them myself, which I don’t mind, but it was somehow the most annoying thing after all of the misses within 2 hours of arrival.

5. If the guest asks for a Keurig coffee maker in the room (yes you have to ask), are the creamer packets replenished during service? And when you ask for some to be brought up, how long do you think it should take? 5 min? 10 min? 15 min? I supposed the “Whenever” in their logo means “whenever we feel like it.” Idk.

6. If room service ends at 3 and you leave your room at 2, should the room be serviced?

7. Does the phone receiver work? At that point I didn’t even bother. The answer is “no” by the way.

All of this begs the question: why is your nightly rate the same as when you were a competent operation if you’ve decided to become a < 3 star hotel? We’ve stayed here about 7 times previously so I have a very clear frame of reference. No excuse for this level of decline.

Very bad external and internal noise insulation- get really good earplugs …
Staff is polite but service is ineffective and indifferent .
Asked for a room away from elevator- got room IN FRONT OF IT.
Elevator shaft makes creecky noises all day and all night..I guess proper maintenance or maybe oiling is not in the agenda for a 500 dollar a night room….
Internet slow or won’t connect..when you call the hotel service they transfer you to the ISP! Zero accountability or care. And this from a guest with Bonvoy status…
A total rip off and why brand name hotels are all about marketing and no substance.
Keep away.

We stayed at the W Union Square for 3 nights with our 10 year old son while visiting friends in town. I was hesitant to stay there after reading a lot of reviews, however we were very happy with it. There is no restaurant or lounge right now, and the lobby is very small till the renovations are complete, however none of that impacted our stay. We had a park view, king room with twin bed (it’s actually a day bed). The room was huge, and the bed for our son was perfect for him. I am 5’5 and it would have been fine for me as well. We called down to have them bring up sheets, blankets, and pillows for us and they set the whole bed up. The view from the room (907), was amazing. We’ve never had a view like this in any of the hotels we’ve stayed at in the city. I could look out the windows forever. The heat was an issue, it would get really warm very quickly. So, I turned it off for the 3 days we were there. It was totally fine then, never even got cold with it off. We were right across from the elevator, no noise issues, and we hardly ever heard another guest. Bring a noise machine to block out city noises. You don’t need a restaurant at the hotel, you have the whole city right out your door. We got bagels every morning at Gramercy Bagel, yum! There is a CVS, Dunkin, Starbucks, little bodega, cafes, restaurants all within a short walk. They do have coffee in the lobby in the morning. We would not hesitate to stay here again, all though I’m sure the prices will go up once the renovations are complete.

This was our first stay at the W New York Union Square. I don’t know if the reduced staff is pandemically related. It is noteworthy that there is no doorman and no one to help with luggage. I was particularly aware of this because I was injured and required a wheelchair for part of our stay.
And because of that injury, we needed to extend our visit from eight nights to eleven nights. My husband simply asked the desk clerk to extend our stay and was surprised that they did not honor the original rate but increased it by $40 a night. He respectfully asked to speak with a manager and had the unpleasant experience of dealing with a surly antagonistic man who is one of three managers Gustavo Polenco. He was rude and belligerent, which is surprising for someone in the hospitality industry. However, Margie in reception, and Snezana in housekeeping, were delightful and extremely accommodating. The hotel was clean and very nice and the Irvington Restaurant was delicious.

The hotel was in a great location but the hotel staff was not helpful. Coffee pots were not available, I was overcharged for my room and had to call too many times to get it fixed and got a big run around. I was charged for the mini bar that was to be credited for 25 dollars. The bed was not comfortable but I could have lived with that. This hotel is supposed to be in the Marriott chain and that is surprising as it’s lacking the amenities and staff that we used to from Marriott.

This hotel, as of April 2023 and through at least August of 2023, is under renovation. I am told it will be going on for at least another year, probably more. The photos of the interior spaces of the hotel are beautiful, but they were taken before the renovation began. They do not portray the reality at all. There is no functioning kitchen or restaurant, no dining room, no lounge or sitting area of any kind, and obviously no room service. There are the rooms, and the front desk. That is all. In the morning, they set up a cart with Croissants and a couple of coffee pots. You are permitted one croissant per person in your room. They count them. If you need to wait in the lobby for any reason, the only place to sit is on a bench along the wall. The room we stayed in smelled like mildew, the mattresses seemed to be very, very old and worn out, and the bathroom smelled like a litter box. It had a moldy, plastic shower curtain. The front desk lost two of our jackets, and it took almost 6 months to get them to pay for them. When they did pay, they…”Adjusted for depreciation.” Location is of course great, as is the park view, but I cannot shake the feeling that they are desperate at the W to keep it occupied and are being dishonest keeping the beautiful photos live (above) Noe of it exists at all. Arriving late at night with my young kids and there not being a morsel of food to feed them was a BAD feeling. That neighborhood is uncharacteristically closed down at night. The staff was friendly, but unable to provide any of the servces one would expect from a good - or even lousy - hotel.

Typically I do not choose W, as I prefer Westin properties for business. I chose this hotel as it was a Marriott brand near our business meetings.

The check in was smooth, but no mention or offer for my Platinum Elite status.

Hotel is clean, but bathrooms are dated

Only one option for food on property

Decent room service menu options

Loved having a mini bar as most hotels these days don't have them.

It is a $25 mandatory charge that can be applied to room service or the mini bar as I understand it. Definitely not toward bar or restaurant charges. If you would use those then it's fine, I usually do not.

The room had a television, clock radio, and a hair dryer. Our room had a refrigerator, but I had requested one when I made my reservation. So in other words, a refrigerator is not a standard amenity in a guest room. You can request a refrigerator, but do it early. They do not have enough portable refrigerators for every room in the hotel.
