Completed in 1908, the American Seaman’s Friend Society Sailors’ Home and Institute was designed by William A. Boring, the architect renowned for Ellis Island’s immigrant station. Originally built as a hotel for sailors with cabin-like rooms, the land-marked hotel was lovingly restored on its centennial in 2008 as the Jane Hotel. The Jane Hotel has continued to house guests with more dash than cash ever since.

I'd recommend The Jane for two types of users.

First, anyone who can't face a late night train ride back to Long Island, Jersey, upstate or Connecticut after a night out and wants somewhere to crash for one night.

Second, people who understand about travelling on a budget on a short stay.

The Jane is located in a very nice area next to the Hudson, surrounded by the Whitney, High Line, Meat Packing District, Pier 51 park and Greenwich Village. There are hundreds of nice cafes, bars, restaurants and independent stores within 10 minutes, although Jane St is residential.

The rooms are tiny, about the size of a walk in wardrobe, or a Queen Size bed. Their design is genius and in fact you get an amazing amount of storage space, plus a mirror which makes the room seem twice as big. Rooms have AC and a fan so the temperature is easy to control.

Inevitably there is noise, because there are so many rooms per hall and the doors slam slightly. I had no issues with the shared bathrooms, brushing my teeth looking at he Statue of Liberty was a novelty. It was also nice to stay in a NYC hotel and not wait 20 minutes for the elevator.

All the staff I encountered were genuinely friendly, check in and out were very easy.

Down sides include lack of facilities, which after a long flight I missed. There is a shut down cafe over looking The Hudson, it really would take no cost at all to get a self service coffee machine and coke machine so people could enjoy the space. Residents could easily order delivery (The Jane has a deal with a local restaurant for delivery) and enjoy the nice space at no cost to the hotel, but no..... The interior is fairly dark and getting a bit tatty in places, not badly so, but 2008 chic character is now not so chic. Room switches were fiddly.

The nightclub didn't cause me any problems, but I asked for a high room at the back.

Ultimately, you pair a fair price and I'd book here over other discount accommodation in NYC (which can be very sketchy), just be aware that this is discount accommodation.

We stayed three nights this past weekend. Our first two, we stayed in one of the bunk rooms (what we originally booked). While a great value, the quarters are quite tight (about the size of a roomette on an Amtrak train). So, if using them, pack light and don't plan on doing much else in them besides sleeping. The bed mattresses are a bit thin, and would benefit from some mattress toppers. On the plus side, these room have a small TV by each bed, and plenty of outlets chargers. The shared bathrooms were adequate, clean, and we had no major conflicts with others using them. On the third night we were able to book into one of the Captain's quarters, which was MUCH more spacious and comfortable. If you can get one on the back of the second floor, it comes with a balcony overlooking an interior block courtyard (lovely). At it's price, it's a great value!

The hotel is nicely restored, with helfpul staff. You really get a sense of the building's history from it's interior design. There's a large lounge on the first floor open during the evening. On the weekends, it's a hot spot for local millenials and gen Zers, gay and straight. There's a small restaurant off the lobby available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices in both the lounge and restaurant are on the high side, so don't get caught off guard by that.

The hotel is within walking distance of a number of attractions: westside river walkway and bike lanes, the High Line park, the Whitney Museum, and the West Village. The 8th Avenue subway line is a 10-minute walk away, and there's overnight parking right next door (although, again, on the high side pricewise). If driving in, it's easy access to and from the Holland tunnel. The street is generally quiet, although we always recommend bringing ear plugs along when traveling, because you never know.

Great quiet location on a cobblestone street. On arrival I was greeted by a very friendly staff member who quickly checked me in and explained the key system. The lobby is small but appropriate for the style. The hotel has a period feel and despite its age, it worked without issue. The hallways are dim and have lots of turns but there are signs pointing you in the right direction. There did seem to be an odor in the halls. I couldn't identify it precisely but kind of musty. The rooms use key fobs to unlock doors. The single rooms are small. The pictures are true representation. The single bed is bigger then the floor space. There is plenty of storage under and above the bed. There are hooks on a rod above the wall length mirror for hanging clothes. There are also two marble shelves under the window and along the length of the short wall. There is a tv, ihome, a/c, heater and fan. One ceiling light and a light at the head of the bed. The bed is firm and there is a sheet and blanket. The temperature of the room is easy to adjust due to the small size. The walls are thin but I heard no noise between 10pm and 8am.
The bathroom on my floor had 2 fully inclosed toilets and 2 fully enclosed shower stalls, 2 sinks with 2 blow dryers. The bathrooms are communal and co-ed. Bathroom was clean and I had no waits to use the facilities.
The staff was consistently pleasant.
I am very interested in tiny house living so this was up my alley.

If you know the area then you know prices can be high and yet The Jane is super affordable and a great value. I chose The Jane for proximity to a friend and a theater production I intended to see. I stayed in a room with a private bath so I can’t address the shared bath experience but can definitely attest to the cleanliness of the bathroom in my “Captain’s Cabin” and in addition just a very well appointed bathroom. My bed was huge and comfortable. The hotel staff were great especially Alejandro upstairs in the bar. This is not a 5 star hotel property but it is most definitely worthy of a 5 star rating for providing excellent value, comfortable lodging and other guest services, and a great team of people taking care of the guests.

Because of what their website declared, we happily stayed at The Jane Hotel the weekend of September 25th, 2021. It seemed funky, fun, very affordable, great location, had a rooftop bar/lounge over looking the river and a restaurant with great reviews which we thought would be convenient for pre-theater apps and cocktails.
Yes, the rooms with bunk beds are small but we didn't plan on spending much time in there. They were very clean as was the community bathrooms and entire hotel. However, upon arrival we were told the rooftop lounge was only available & rented for special events and having nothing to do with Covid, the restaurant had also been closed. You could order room service from a neighboring restaurant but wait time was one hour. The Ballroom which was presented on their website as available for special functions has now be turned into a very popular and loud nightclub open from 10pm to 4am. The lines to get in were more than a block long and about 6 people deep of very young beautiful people.
Granted, the restaurant was closed but they didn't even offer morning coffee. If you asked at the front desk you could get a bottle of room temperature tap water (which is better than nothing and we discovered from another hotel guest we met on the elevator) but it would have been nice if they threw in a couple paper cups or glasses. I mean, come on!!
If the restaurant and rooftop bar were open, we'd be happy to stay there again in a heartbeat. But its hard what the website promises when you can't even get a glass of water for your room.

It's been rough for everyone since Covid reared its ugly head, hasn't it? Glad to see you made it safe and sound! Unfortunately, like so much of the country, we are still working on our recovery. The building and all it's vendors were closed with the initial hits Covid took on NYC, and we've only been (partially) reopen for a couple months. We had hoped to be fully open by now, and certainly we are working feverishly to get there as quickly as possible. We are as frustrated as you that things haven't been going as quickly as hoped. As stated on the Jane website, the Rooftop Bar and Ballroom are seasonal, and it is already fall. Even though the restaurant hasn't reopened, we are serving award-winning burgers through the Gotham Burger Social Club in the parklett out-front, Thursdays through Sundays, 5pm to 10pm. Thank you so, so very much for your patience, patronage and understanding as we get back on our feet. We look forward to seeing you again! Cheers!

My first 5 star review! I write hotel reviews now and again and am usually prone to giving 3-4 stars (usually 4). I’m not picky, especially in NYC where hotels are crazy expensive. I had read every review on the Jane hotel that I could find online, so I knew pretty much exactly what to expect. I LOVED IT!!!! Every single aspect of the hotel was great! I loved my little room and found it to be cozy and just right for my needs. There is a large cut-out underneath the bed that will store a large bag. The tv was great with tons of channels. A/C worked great and the little fan at the top of the room was perfect for some white noise to help me sleep. It also did a great job of circulating air. The bed was comfy, linens nice. The shared bathroom didn’t bother me at all. I packed a robe (I’m a big guy and figured the Jane robe was probably too small) and wore it to the bathroom every morning. I did encounter other people in the bathrooms, but not once did I have to wait for a toilet stall or shower. The shower had great water pressure. The front desk was super friendly and I even got to meet Jamie, the front desk manager so many have mentioned in their reviews. I stayed in a different hotel the second week of my trip. It was fine and I had my own bathroom, but I really preferred the Jane. The location can’t be beat. As someone else stated ‘A hotel with a soul’ . Truly can’t be beat and I look forward to my next stay.

My husband and I enjoyed our first stay at The Jane. We checked in very late, which was no problem. The man working the check-in desk was super friendly and we chatted with him for quite a while.

We had a bunk bed cabin for the night. Very tiny and very clean! One of the lightbulbs was out, but other than that everything was well-maintained and functional. The shared bathroom was also very clean and we ran into people in there from all over the world! If you're a light sleeper the sound of the doors opening and closing may disturb you. The doors are very loud and there are so many of them. Overall, it's a good value for the price.

We had breakfast at The Old Rose downstairs, which was a cheery setting with basic foods and drink. The man working there was a bit grumpy though.

Did not see the ballroom (they were filming a movie in there) or rooftop (it was closed) but would like to check them out next time. We'll likely be back!

Just to give a heads up - they have bed bugs , the rooms are filthy and smell like cigarettes / weed from the people smoking outside waiting to get into the club. Over priced and totally awful.

If you are under the impression that this is a cheap but clean no frills version of the Bowery hotel/ marlton/ chateau marmont vibe it is NOT,

I implore you to spend more money and have a better time , our night rate was also massively overinflated , paying around £300 a night for this dump due to the city being busy. The whole experience was very upsetting and a total waste of my time.

We had to switch hotels because of the bed bugs , obviously very difficult in New York at late notice, especially over a weekend. Figuring this out took a whole evening and morning off our trip. Screw this place it is god awful.

This hotel is a little outdated and especially the shared bathroom could be a lot cleaner and more tidier. Nevertheless, is this without doubt the best place to stay as a traveller. The one person rooms are small, but perfectly designed. They have a fantastic boat hut feeling in the twenties. I never seen something a like and it is amazing! I would recommend everyone to stay here.

I am a 5 year resident of NYC. We came as a large group of colleagues. The bouncer invited all the eight females in the group to the front, letting them all in at no charge. The five guys were told they could not get in without buying a $1200 table, and the front door management was extremely rude. There are many other places in midtown where you don't need to deal with such disrespectful people. I would strongly recommend avoiding this horrible establishment.
