This is a historic hotel in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter and close to the convention centre where I had a conference. It is a charming place full of history and atmosphere. The courtyard with lush trees was serene and lovely, whether being inside it, or looking over it from my room on the 4th floor. My room wasn't large, but sufficient and had a nice window bay where the desk was placed, overlooking the courtyard. The bathroom was also small but adequate. The balcony had two wrought iron chairs, great to sit with a coffee in hand at any time of day for a breather. There was a gas fireplace which I didn't use as the weather was perfect at the time I was there. All the furniture and bathroom fittings had a period feel and some of the furniture was a bit faded, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom fixtures all worked perfectly. The attached Salt and Whisky restaurant provided satisfactory dinners and breakfasts, although I found it a bit on the expensive side. But the local draft ale I was recommended was delicious! At dinnertime there is a musician providing atmospheric live music. What surprised me was the total absence of service in the room. I stayed 5 nights and while I didn't expect linens and towels to be changed every day, I had expected at least bed making, clearing of the waste baskets and replenishment of shampoo/soap and coffee/tea supplies. Instead I had to ask for resupplies at the front desk before they were delivered. When I mentioned on day 4 (I had been too busy to bring it up until then) that the bed was a mess, the bathroom uncleaned, overflowing waste bins uncleared (with some food waste this was unhealthy), the front desk staff said that due to Covid19, there was no service unless requested and apparently I had been told this on arrival. I had checked in exhausted at 1 am after a long flight and maybe I didn't hear it, but I found the situation a bit unsatisfactory. For every other job in hospitality, to protect staff and customers the use of face masks, disposable gloves and antiseptic cleansing fluids, together with regular antigen testing of staff would suffice to protect all parties while delivering basic services. Covid19 should not be a reason to cut back basic services so drastically, especially now that everything, including international travel, is opening up. But once I requested, the room was then freshened to a high standard. Overall, I was sufficiently satisfied with my stay to say that I would return.

We booked a suite for an important occasion. The room we were given, although well furnished, was directly beneath a faulty compressor, that caused the room to shudder violently every 15-20 minutes! When we complained, the receptionist first denied that anything was wrong. After a night of little sleep (our entire bed shook), the morning receptionist told us that they had been trying to repair it for days, and she changed our room. But they should never have given it to us! Then, the restaurant was closed for breakfast when they promised that it would be open that first morning. When I went the next day, the service was lousy and the food not good. When I went to get ice from the machine on our floor, it didn't work and housekeeping told me that it never did and to try the machine two floors below! The noise late at night from the bars on the street below our room also intruded on our peace of mind. And these are just some of our complaints. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! IT IS AWFUL!!!

Dear Valued Guest, I sincerely apologize for your experience with us. A shaking room is a very serious matter and it is disheartening that your complaint was not rectified immediately. I am surprised about the restaurant remarks, I have always experienced wonderful service and food from the Salt & Whiskey team. Nevertheless, I will ensure that your views are discussed with our team to alleviate any future shortcomings. Todd Husted General Manager

We were in town for 1 night as part of our California road trip to catch the Padres game. Lovely hotel with great rooms, and ambiance. If you are considering it, book it as it is a lovely charming place to stay. Great location as well and really charming details and architecture.

DON'T STAY IN THIS HOTEL! On 03/29/22 we suffered a ROBBERY of our clothes, shoes, watches, perfume, and also a complete NAVY uniform. We stayed in room 416 for two weeks. On 04/09/22 in room 418 another guest who wrote a comment on the hotel's Instagram had the same terrible experience, someone STOLE her perfume, purse, and her credit cards that were used at CVS and 7 Eleven. We were trying to talk to the manager but he was always "busy" and also he is ignoring our emails. We got a call from the insurance company but they disclaim any kind of responsibility because there is no evidence. How can we have any evidence if this hotel doesn't have SECURITY CAMERAS? Also, we haven't received any report from the door key access to our room.

Dear Guest, We are disheartened for your experience, this is absolutely not indicative of this property. The Manager you are referring to is no longer with the hotel and we apologize for lack of availability. Your claim has been investigated by the police and the insurance claims representatives assigned to this case. We fully cooperate with their protocol and trust their process and resolutions. The Horton Grand takes security very seriously as we have 47 security cameras at the hotel and patrolling guards every day. We truly apologize for the trouble this caused you, but we do align with the professionals and their conclusion in this matter. Sincerely, Todd Husted General Manager

What a gem, quirky but full of character & history. Located close to the better end if Gaslamp and a short walk to Seaport Village. Everything is close by. Good places to eat. Room was lovely overlooking the courtyard. Beautifully decorated throughout and the fire place was welcome , we were cold. Shower was a bit creeky but plenty of hot water. Beds super comfy. We did eat in the bar, a bit underwhelming there are better places paces away. San Diego is now one of our favourite places, we decided to stay an extra night, Giovanni was so helpful in arranging this for us. So polite, same as Ken (I hope I got his name right). Horton Grand may be small but you get the personal touch that is missed by large corporates
