We travel to San Diego 5-6 times per year (twice in 2020 so far). I am desperate to find a hotel we can count on quality, location and service. I wanted The Keating to be a place i could count on to book a stay each time we visited San Diego. The location alone could have sold me, but the safety concerns and lack of front desk support will ensure my search continues. The hotel is overall poorly managed. Our stay started on a poor note, one of the front desk gentleman literally looked at me walking up to the hotel with suitcase in hand, he walked into the (very small) lobby without holding the door or acknowledging me in any way even when standing in front of him. Later the woman working did assist me with no kind words for the other individual. Our room (3H) was interesting, quirky and should have been fun...if it was maintained. First off, there are room objects (desk and refrigerator) blocking the two windows in the main room. This is an incredible safety hazard not to mention inconvenient and annoying. Safety hazard #2 comes with ONLY HOT water! Yep, couldn't even shower or wash up due to the HOT water ONLY coming from the faucets. When we were on our way out through the lobby, (yet another) front desk gentleman asked about it but in no way offered a solution or compensation. The following morning when it continued to be an issue and I overheard another guest was being offered a partial refund but they couldn't accommodate as their reservation had been made through a third party, i requested a refund following our breakfast and was denied. Even when it was acknowledged that i booked directly with the hotel. They want to advertise the LavAssa coffee makers but don't bother, it doesn't work. Only one of the lighted mirrors work, the closet doesn't even open fully and you can't fully open the small refrigerator as it is blocked by furniture. Such simple things to fix. With no parkign at the hotel, we found nearby parking in the Horton garage (1 block away) and understood the 24 hour charge was $48. When i inquired about valet parking at the Keating, they quote $49. What they don't know is the Horton will scam you and charge $2/15 min until 8pm and THEN begin a 24 hour period. The Keating could sell their valet parking if they educated themselves a bit.
The Keating has an incredible location but the poor service, HOT water only rooms, lack of fire safety and no coffee takes this hotel off my list of options. My search continues!

Stayed at the Imperial Suite. Was very impressed. The Jacuzzi inside the room was big enough to fit 2 people and very relaxing. Had a great view to the Gaslamp District. The only few nitpicks I had would be you can hear everything coming from the other rooms. Very thin walls, especially in the morning. The location of the tv in the bedroom is completely misplaced. I had to crouch under it everytime I needed to shower. I would also suggest having instructions on how to connect to the bluetooth and how to use the espresso machine as well. I wouldnt be complaining about these small things if it wasn't for how pricy this suite is. But overall I loved this Suite and it was the perfect getaway for my wife and I.

Great time at the Keating; I stayed there over New Years Eve. Excellent location. It provides you a good jumping off point, if you want to explore downtown. There are many bars and restaurants in the immediate area.
However, it gets very loud at night. The noise seeps into the rooms pretty easily. So, if you are a light sleeper, I do not recommend staying at the Keating on a Friday or Saturday night.

First thing is the rate. I had originally booked “best flexible rate” 4 weeks prior to my arrival date but then a week before check in I was nearby so I stopped to pay in advance. The front desk was kind and even reduced my rate due to paying in advance. Unfortunately when I arrived and asked them to match the rate on their website since rates had gonna down the girl said no since I paid in advance. Shame.

When I walked into the room it smelled stale, not a good stale so I had to open the windows but the street noise was loud so I decided to close them but then the AC would not go below 74. I had to open the windows again and listen to random people talking on the street. The imperial suite is not for relaxing it’s pretty much the meeting spot for your friends to gather but don’t think about using this to chill and relax. The bed was comfortable but the shower nozzles overhead are half clogged. Cleanliness of room is adequate but don’t go looking in between crevices or else you might walk out.

I also didn’t use the coffee machine because it said $6 per cup on the display but then when I checked out I was told the water and coffee were included in my $25 fee. I almost wanted to walk back up to the room and take the two bottles of water.

The staff was very friendly and attentive even at 1am when I asked for a bucket of ice.

A friend saw me post on social media that I was staying here and she asked if I recommend it and I had to say no. For me it’s not worth it even though I didn’t stay more then a day I found myself not knowing where to sit in the hour prior to my friends arriving because I couldn’t watch tv unless I stood in front of it.

For such a small amount of rooms I would recommend for the GM or Manager on duty to make courtesy calls to guests it might help create return guests.

The Keating hotel is located in the very heart of the Gaslamp district of San Diego. It's a perfect representation of its surroundings: tacky, garish and very noisy but nonetheless charming and lovable.

It's situated right above an Irish theme pub with live music that goes on well into the night most (maybe all) days of the week. As such if you're on floors 2 or 3 it's very noisy until about midnight. For me this is a huge flaw in any hotel and not something I knew beforehand.

The decor is...interesting. LIberace probably would have felt pretty at home here. The rooms are basic but comfortable, although they have a weird penchant for ceiling mirrors in odd places like above the bathroom sink. There is a gym and some meeting rooms but that wasn't really obvious at any point - they're very well hidden round several corners and nobody mentioned them.

The staff were extremely nice and friendly, absolutely no problem there. But this place really is best if you're young, on vacation and therefore unlikely to want to go to bed before midnight. Families and business travellers will most likely NOT enjoy this place.

We checked in for two nights, the front desk were very friendly and told us before we went to our room it would be noisy. Well first night was street noise which was not too bad but the second night there was an Irish band right below us and we could hear the words of the songs till 1130pm. Owner needs to fix this issue if you are going to be called a boutique hotel. Complained to front desk , nothing was done. SO much potential for this location but missing it with old decor and noise. Would not recommend.

Prob generous on rating. All night party allowed to go all night. After 2 noise complaints with poor results party went until 4am. Management the next day only removed 25$ service fee for a entire night with no sleep. I worked in hospitality business for over 20 years and this is not how you get return/happy guests. Especially with so many other choices nearby.

Nice location, friendly staff and a very large room.
However, the live music from the cafe downstairs sounds like it is in your own bedroom.
A guest in another room had a call on speakerphone for an hour I could hear both ends of the conversation

Nice hotel, has faint smell of cigarettes. The location is great, next to some really nice clubs and bars that really embody the San Diego nightlife experience. Staff is very friendly and provide you with a lot of useful information. Would come here again!

If you are visiting SD., this is a great option. Central Location (F St off 5th Ave), spacious rooms with crisp clean sheets, and pleasant front desk staff. Convenient location allows for an easy walk to central downtown and just across the street are a great choice of restaurants,( Nobu and many great ethnic , Chinese, tacos etc food options), gelato shops, bars, and coffee cafes. Three minutes walk from the Convention Center and the Marina.
Last tip:
The bed was just AMAZING. I had the best rest of my entire life LOl very comfy mattress, pillows and duvet. I used jet-lag as an excuse for extra nap time.

I am not sure but most hotels have these available in the room or simply ask for one at the desk. I am sure there’s one. By the way, this is a great hotel to stay in San Diego.

We enjoyed it. We are a couple, so the jacuzzi in the LR is fine. We also didn't mind clear walls in the shower. For the price quoted in the show, I would have been much more critical. But we were in the 200-300 range. Not the 700 range. So, for a quirky, over-stylized hotel in downtown, we were very happy. The staff was outstanding, attentive, and gave good advice on local dining. We didn't order room service, so can't give an opinion on that. We were also on a high floor, so can't complain about the local noise. But if you're going to a boutique hotel in the trendy area, don't be surprised if the neighborhood is a bit noisy. There was some annoying penny-pinching, like overpriced honor wine in the room. Also a resort fee when no resort services are offered. But that seems to be industry practice now. Overall, worth the price we paid, and fun.
