Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying and fishing with Big Horn Anglers for 4 nights and 3 days right after Labor Day. We stayed in one of their cabins which was very well laid out and comfortable, with 2 bedrooms,a full fridge, stove top, microwave and coffee maker. Everything you need for a very nice home away from home. It's steps to the fly shop to meet your guide in the morning.
We took the complete meal plan and were very impressed with the quality of all meals whether taken in the boat, cabin or dining room. The kitchen staff were very pleasant and accomodating and went out of their way to make us feel at home.
We had the good fortune to be assigned to Owner/Guide Pete Shanafelt for our 3 days. We have been fortunate to fish with many fine guides over the years including our 2 sons and daughter in law, and Pete is right at the top of the food chain.
As a bonus, his black lab, Frank, an excellent boat dog and fishing companion, joined us for the last 2 days.
The first day and a half we nymped and had constant action with many 18-21 inch Rainbows to the net along with some nice Browns. The Bows are brawny, healthy and very strong , with many taking off like a bonefish when hooked taking you well into your backing.
The last day and a half we switched to big hoppers and had world class dry fly action. Based on our experience, as good as anything in Patagonia or New Zealand. We landed hefty 25", 23.5, 22.5 and 21.5 Browns as well as some very large Rainbows. Fantastic!
All in all just a tremendous experience. Highly recommended.

Our third trip in a row and somehow it just keeps getting even better! Fishing with Pete Shanafelt is as good as it gets. We've never had a guide with better instincts or vision. He seems like an old friend by now and each day is filled with big, beautiful and very hot Rainbows and Browns as well as good food and much laughter. When the Big Horn is on ,as it has been for us all 3 years, there can't be a river to compare. The accomadations are comfortable and convenient and the food served up by Linnie and George is amazing given the remoteness of the location. We have so many fond memories of Pete, the staff and huge fish caught and missed. Already booked for next year!

We had our first time fishing the Bighorn at Ft. Smith. Great to have the rural feel, fishing guides haven for big Browns & Rainbows. The Fish that Got Away on my line was so huge that I could not even land it. Great nymphing for us rookies. Our guide, Bryen, got us in the pools, and kept rowing up the eddies so we had More Chances to land a trout.
The Lodge is simple, clean, serving great meals with local beef ( 4H raised!), Gracious kitchen staff. The lodge does a great job with the current Covid-19 restrictions. Everyone is happy. Go fishing!

Shuttle prices on the Big Horn are ridiculous. Price use to be $25 for the 3 to B float but now its $40 and they left me stranded. I had an amazing day on the water to only find out that my pickup didn't get delivered. Tried to call the Fly shop, and their number they gave to contact the shuttle but only reached voicemail. Had to walk the 10 miles to get my pickup. Thankfully on the way the nice gentleman from the Big Horn River Lodge picked me up and gave me a ride. Don't book with these people I've heard nothing but bad reports from people I know these last few seasons and now its happened to me.

Response from Bighorn Angler, Owner at Bighorn Angler Lodge
Responded 24 Mar 2022
Hello and sorry to hear about your experience. Think there may be a little confusion here as our shuttle price to Bighorn is only $30 not $40. Are you sure you arranged this through us? We work tirelessly to see to every detail and it shows in our immaculate reviews both on trip advisor and google. Regardless of weather you arranged this through us or someone else we are happy to offer you a free shuttle next time you are down here. Best Regards - Mike (Owner)

We had a group of four to fly fish all day. Guide Tyrell was awesome with my 14 yr old daughter and husband . They had great lesson, caught rainbows and browns. We also had George who gave instruction, history , and also helped us catch amazing fish. The rooms were great, clean and the food was amazing . Thanks for two great days. I would recommend to anyone.

I am an accomplished terminal tackle guy, so not being an experienced fly-fisherman, I was wondering how I'd do - My guide (Phil) was one of the best I have ever met, and he coached me through the best two days of trout fishing (I have fished other famous MT rivers plus one in AK)...I am so happy that I went here, so happy with the entire experience. I WILL return, for sure. The lodging is just fine, the food is really, really good, the people are absolutely wonderful (a reflection of the owner/management), but most of all: Enjoy this fishery.

Pete and team know service -- great fishing, guiding, hosting. Many comfortable lodging options. Food in the dining room and on the river was super. This was my first time on the Bighorn and it was amazing. Really a strong fishery. Bighorn Angler was such a super host. Helped w/preparations, woke w/me to make adjustments when plans changed. When we arrived they were all about taking care of us. We had a blast and we will go back. Thanks Pete.

The staff at Bighorn Angler Lodge are all top notch, super friendly, and very helpful. Fishing guides were well prepared and equipped for anything. Meals were all fantastic. We had 4 guys in the lower level of their overlook cabin and it was spacious, very nice/new, and had a great view from outside.

I'd recommend being very specific on what type of guide you're seeking so they match you with whomever is best for your needs.

The place is undergoing ownership change. Right now the rooms suck. Hopefully the new owners will spend some money and fix the place up a little. It is the cheapest place to stay for a reason. Food is good and the guide service is great.

This lodge is 1:45 hours from Billings. Cell coverage for only one carrier (Verizon?). Very comfortable rooms adjacent to a top notch fly shop. And the fishing? It's the Bighorn, dude. It is always awesome. Satellite t.v. is good, be forewarned, food options are a cafe across the street for decent burgers and service without a smile, and a higher end eatery 10 miles down the road. Dry county, so if you want a beer bring you're own. Overall, Bighorn Angler is a great place to stay!

Billings, MT is the best airport to fly into. It's about 90 miles to our Lodge. Thanks!
