Otahuna Lodge is an intimate, exclusive retreat set in an 1895 Victorian mansion. The seven generous suites retain grand architectural features from the 19th century such as open fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows. The spectacular 115-year old gardens stretch over 30 acres and feature many themed areas including an organic kitchen garden and orchard which supply more than 100 kinds of vegetable, fruit and nut to the restaurant.

This has to be one of New Zealand's finest lodge hotels. It simply oozes quality throughout all aspects of its operation. We enjoyed the splendour of this historic, grand, yet intimate and exquisite hotel. The Verandah suite was fantastic in every way: spacious, impeccably clean, beautifully furnished, historic and with an amazing view from the balcony down the main lawn and gardens and beyond to the distant Southern Alps. The interesting and fascinating historical grounds are magnificent as is the peace, beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. The dining experience is superb with excellent fine dining and hospitality delivered with pride and passion from the friendly staff who serve as great ambassadors for the establishment. We dined privately in the turret room and one great feature is that diners can select their own intimate dining location within various areas of the beautiful and historical charm of the various downstairs rooms. When it got a little chillier the staff even provided us with beautiful merino shawls and a hot water bottle! We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to those with an interest in history, an expectation of quality, and high levels of service. You will be hard-pressed to find a better experience in NZ.

We staid there last March, just before the world went chaotic with the virus and it seems to have been a marvelous dream when we think about it today from Europe.
I love everything at Otahuna, the location, so beautiful, the garden (one must ask for the visit with the gardener), the house itself (very British) with the most cosy and peaceful atmosphere you can imagine and the Chef. They really have a fantastic chef and it would be worth the trip just to taste the cooking. They do not have the Michelin Stars in NZ but should they have it there is no doubt it would be a minimum of 2 stars!. They have that big very formal dining room but they can arrange dinner in any other room in the house (and there are many of them, all with a different atmosphere).
This is a small place, one feels home, and still they provide a top service that would match the best worldwide palaces.
Hope to be back one day....

My wife and I have stayed at 6 star luxury hotels and palaces all around the
world. Without reservation, we believe Otahuna Lodge is the best place we have ever stayed. We spent 3 nights there in September ; Springtime , the gardens were beautiful,
daffodils resplendent ! And all the gardens were oh so thoughtfully planned and planted.

The Lodge house itself is gloriously brought back or beyond its original splendor
with the finest materials and fabrics . Each suite is beautifully decorated and offers
views of the meticulously kept gounds.

The service was unobtrusive but superb, happily
anticipating our every requirement. The chefs, there is more than one, produced
food of the highest quality and ingredients which was delicious and dietary requirements were met with ease maintaining the excellent standard.

It was a joy to spend time at Otahuna.

We spent 4 nights here and loved every moment of it. The building and gardens are stunning, our suite luxurious and the entire dining experience exceptional. We are fortunate to experience many beautiful accomodation and dining experiences internationally. At Otahuna Lodge, we loved the relaxed Kiwi style that was integrated into exceptional service. There truly is nothing we can fault. Whether you want to relax at the lodge or explore further afield, we would recommend at least a 3 night stay here for couples who value an exceptional accomodation experience. But if you can only fit in 2 nights - just do it. You'll love it.

Otahuana lodge was highly recommended by one of my tutors from Ara, I booked this lunch for our 5th marriage anniversary when we arrived, a casual but warm welcome from the owner Hall, We were arranged to have our lunch in the library room, cosy and warm fireplace has been set up, a welcome cocktail was made by the lovely lady, she was so friendly and naturally just the feeling from friends or family members. food was 4 courses menu, some ingredients came from the potager and local suppliers like locally farmed duck and Akaroa salmon. A very detailed lunch, everything presented simple but extraordinary, chef Jimmy and Christ explained every dish for us also communicated with us, during the course gap, massive interesting book from the bookshelf. 3 hours of eating time might be a bit long but not boring.

We have stayed in many luxury properties over multiple decades. Otahuna Lodge is in a class by itself. This historic home has been beautifully renovated to a modern standard while retaining its century-old beauty and charm. Owners Hall and MIles are gracious hosts backed by a staff that is exceptionally warm and accommodating. The cuisine is world class under chef Jimmy's leadership. We can't recommend Otahuna Lodge highly enough. We look forward to our return visit!

Only 30 minutes drive from Christchurch, Otahuna Lodge is a memorable, divine destination. Each of the 7 rooms is different and truly luxurious. The staff are an incredible team, they make us feel so welcome and at home. And Jimmy the chef is truly extraordinary, the best we've found on the planet. We cannot recommend this place highly enough, it far exceeded our expectations and we will be returning many times.

Otahuna Lodge is a very special place. It was without peer of places we stayed during our month in New Zealand. We loved it so much we hated to leave, wanted to stay longer and vowed to come back. Why? On arrival, it felt like Downton Abbey. The staff came out to greet us by name. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms exceptional. The food a culinary delight. Most of all, they genuinely seem to welcome their guests and do everything to make the stay at Otahuna Lodge memorable. They do a superb job of blending guests during pre-dinner drinks without forcing socialization that people might not want. Walking the grounds transports you to another time and age. From the person who takes you your luggage up to your room to the proprietor Arthur everyone does what they can to accommodate you. Even your laundry is quietly taken away and cleaned for free with a very short turn around time. Anyone would be lucky to book a stay at Otahuna Lodge, and I encourage you to stay there for at least a week, not the three days we were there. We didn't want to leave.

A family weekend for which we had booked the whole Lodge on the Lord of the Manor package. From the very warm greeting and introduction to "our Home" and gardens we were transported to a fairy tale time in a bygone era of grand homes and service.
Jimmy the chef and his team provided superb innovative cuisine with attention to local and seasonal fare, and from the garden too. Without exception all the staff were great and appeared fond of Otahuna Lodge. Nothing was a bother from catering to the needs of the children, a leisurely guided tour of the gardens with one of the owners, lighting the fires in the bedrooms, topping up the drinks ... I could go on.

My husband & I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary at Otahuna Lodge in February. From driving up the tree lined drive to be greeted by staff until leaving the next day we were made to feel very special by the personal attention from the dedicated staff. Everything about Otahuna Lodge is of a exceptionally high standard complementing this beautifully preserved historic building. We spent the night in the Rhodes suite which took us back in time to the era of previous decades with the beautiful open fire & woodwork. We dined in the stunning dining room with a variety of exquisite food & wine. We spent time walking round the beautiful gardens and swimming in the pool. Our stay at Otahuna Lodge was two days of great enjoyment. Many thanks to everyone at Otahuna Lodge, you all made our 50th very special - Marie & Roy Lingard
