Hotel Zephyr in San Francisco garners praise for its eclectic mix of amenities, from game rooms to fire pits, which offer guests both fun and convenience. The clean, albeit occasionally small and dated, rooms provide a quirky charm, complemented by the hotel's nautical and artsy atmosphere.
While many guests commend the friendly staff, some have encountered less attentive service. The hotel's location is a hit, situated close to city attractions, though some reviewers balk at the steep parking fees and room rates despite the desirable locale.

My husband and I booked our 4 night stay directly through the Zephyr Hotel and arrived by Taxi during the last afternoon of the Fleet Week Air Show. I wish the Hotel had advised us of the extremely difficult approach we would encounter getting to the Hotel from the Airport. A usual 30-40 min Taxi from the Airport turned into 2 hours. Most of the streets were blocked off during the performance and the traffic was unbelievable. If we had known we would have arranged to arrive at a more convenient time, either before or after the show or perhaps stopped off for a nice lunch to kill some time. When we did finally reach the Hotel the lady at reception was quite disinterested as we'd interrupted her cell phone scrolling. She advised us that parking would be $64 USD per day to which I replied that we did not have a car to park. When I was relaxing later that night and reviewing our banking details I noted that we had already been charged for our stay and they charged us an additional $64 per day for parking! When I went back to reception the new receptionist acted like I was lying about having a car, but finally agreed to remove the charges.
We booked the water front suite with balcony and the location was fantastic - we were able to watch the last half hour of the air show from the comfort of our room. The Giant Ferris Wheel in front blocked most of our views but we were happy for what we did have. The room was clean and tidy - very small (it's an older hotel) and the bathroom was even smaller (my husbands knees touched the bathtub from the toilet) There was a fridge, Keurig Coffee machine and Microwave for convenience. You're really paying for the hotel location - it's so convenient to everything! The Big Bus - hop-on/hop off is right on the corner and really a great way to see the area. Restaurants, Alcatraz Tour Pier are very close. You gain entrance and exit access to the front of the street via the Socialite Restaurant or the hotel side Exit near the cafe area. The cost for the Waterfront Balcony Suite was about $625.00 Canadian per night and if you're travelling with children, probably not worth it. They only have a small coffee bar at reception, the Rui across the street serves a breakfast to guests and the room costs are a lot more affordable for families and they have a pool! The Zephyr is definitely unique but we would not stay again now that we've had the water front experience but we are glad that we did for our first trip.

Loved this hotel, as tourists it was perfect location for fisherman’s Wharf. We booked a two bed room/family room which was fine for two adults and two older teens (18/15) enough room for cases etc There was a microwave and coffee/tea making machine in room plus fridge which was very welcome for family travel. We even had a dart board in room which was a novelty. Room was of good standard, bathroom a little bit shoddy in places but perfectly clean and useable. Plenty of full size (and good quality) hand wash/lotion, shampoo, condition and shower gel so you wouldnt need to bring any for a quick trip really!
Free tea/coffee/hot chocolate in reception all day every day and free smore kit per person to use in the outdoor fire pits.
Hotel has plenty of games area (all free) and nice garden area, there was a restaurant attached but didnt use. Think it only opens weekends. A 7/11 around corner and also an ihop right outside. Big Bus Tours is on corner of block and we pre booked a trip with them to Muir Woods. A street away from main Fishermans wharf front and about 5/10mins walk to Alcatraz Wharf.
Honestly perfect spot
The No 28 Bus goes from block behind the hotel right the way to Golden Gate Bridge Lookout and then onto Golden Gate Park (same spots on otherside) if you buy a day pass think it was abt $14 cant remember exactly but you could use it on the trams too! Kids and Students (with ID) travel free on bus so only adults pay. Buses are safe enough as UK tourists to US (Google Maps will show you stops) def go to Golden Gate Park it’s beautiful
Lovely hotel would come back here everytime I visited

Several points made us choose the Zephyr. Firstly, the location, close to Pier 39, easy to access and get around and in a safe and quiet area. Secondly, among the hotels we saw, they had their own parking in the same location, without the option of a valet and with one of the lowest prices we found - $65 per night (add the fees). Thirdly, the hotel offered several attractions and had a modern and relaxed look. The modern and relaxed look and the attractions (games room, open internal space, fire pits, large lobby with several environments) were really proven. Only the room that I thought in the photos looked brighter and “cooler”. In our room There wasn't the weight of the S.O.S bed or the pelican pillow in the photos published by the hotel. However, in the four rooms there was an iron and ironing board, hairdryer, safe, coffee maker, amenities. Comfortable and spacious bed. There is a bar that is possible Access through the hotel and you receive a S'mores kit for 2 to use in the fire pits. We were also given wine glasses for 3. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate were available for guests at reception. Staff were attentive, polite and helpful. The hotel charges resort fee of $30 per day per room and a few other fees. There is no breakfast in the room rate, but there is an IHOP next to the hotel, a Starbucks in the back block and Pier 39 is 2 blocks away.

Non existent customer service. They charge a per night hold on your credit card of 75USD yet they have nothing in the hotel you could charge to your room (no room service, restaurant or anything like that you can tick up to your room). Paid in full for the room via booking.com yet the hotel charged our credit card for some apparent taxes that “booking.com mustn’t have calculated properly”. When bought this up that it was something they needed to take up with booking.com they weren’t interested and said that was for us to sort. They have security (at night two people) there every day yet every time we saw that security they were on their phones watching something on Netflix or whatever platform. Not once did the security raise their glance to check each time there was movement or noise or anything really. The hotel also charge a $30USD daily fee for ‘use of services’ like their courtyard, games room and wifi. Things that most hotels include as part of the facilities available. No mention of this on booking.com or when checked in. Discovered it when asked for print out of bill. Bill was littered with so many taxes that it was difficult to work out what booking.com had apparently undercharged for re tax. Before, during and after the stay constantly got emails asking to verify payment method ‘and click on this link to do so’… do not click on the link. No amount of emailing the hotel got a response about that. Whilst it’s a great location, would not recommend, based on the above.

Feedback from our guests is always appreciated as it helps us improve. We regret to hear about the confusion with your bill. Unfortunately, reservations made via third-party sites do not include certain taxes and fees. This is noted during the booking process and is not something we're able to change. It's unfortunate our security team was not as attentive as you expected them to be. We ask that you reach out to us at zteam@hotelzephyrsf.com to ensure we have all the necessary information to properly address your comments. If you're in the area again, we'd be grateful for the chance to provide you with a more positive visit. Warm Regards, Joyce Yun, General Manager Hotel Zephyr San Francisco

Had stay for three nights for a business trip. It was recommended by a friend who had been here before. Check-in does not occur until 4 pm, so do not be surprise of the over-crowded lobby. Once checked in, you need to navigate the location of your room with the "many" hallways that can get you lost. (signage is very poor) The room I had received was small, dim lighted, and smelled like a dirty dish rag. I discover the odor was originating from the shower curtain that definitely needed to be replaced. The bathroom fan was also not working nor the bathroom drains. These issues were brought to the attention of the front desk later that night, but no response until I had mention it the second day when I had returned from my business meetings. The shower curtain and bathroom drain finally was cleared, but at times it didn't matter because the faucet water pressure was not very good. Regardless, the bathroom fan never got repaired (stated had to wait for parts) and the room continue to smell like mildew. The hotel finally offered me to change room the last night I was there...If your staying here, be prepare to wait for any services that you may need, small rooms, and the experience to be lost getting back to your designated room.

We stayed there in a King Bedroom on the third floor, facing the Pacific Ocean for our recent vacation around Thanksgiving time. Through the floor-to-cieling windows, we had a good view of Golden Gate Bridge and the ferris wheel near Fisherman's wharf. The location was also excellent with proximity to the cable car station, was also not far from Chinatown.
I felt that our room was actually bigger than the pictures on their website had made it seem. The room was clean with a comfortable bed, quality furniture, and various lighting options. The desk provided was roomy and serves as an adequate office space in a pinch. Our only complaint was that the location in the hotel was not accessible to the paid parking and was not easy to reach. This made loading and unloading baggage difficult.
For the all of this, we were charged the $246.75 room fee listed on the website, plus $64 for parking, $30 for Amenities, and various taxes. In total, we paid 797.38 for two nights, which came up to around $400 per night, over 60% more than the nominally advertised price.

Was checked in today by a miserable and unpleasant receptionist. We were just handed our key cards without a smile, any introduction to the hotel or welcome. We booked 2 rooms. Both rooms are very basic. Only 1 side of the bed with plug and table. No glasses/cups, cotton pads, shower cap etc in bathroom - only shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and hand soap. And our shower gel was empty! Our room is near elevator so can hear it pinging all the time and people walking past. We can also hear all the traffic outside. Walls are paper thin too. Location is good if you want to be near tourist spot. I wouldn’t recommend. More like a 3*. I would be checking out asap but unfortunately our booking is non refundable.

I stayed at Hotel Zephyr for 5 nights. I had a king bed with a balcony and view of the water (Rm 3222). See view from the room below. Because the balcony faced the street and it's a busy tourist area, it was quite loud well after dark most nights, but closing the sliding glass doors kept out most of the noise. I always travel with a sound machine, so it didn't bother me at all. I loved that there were hooks inside the door to hang coats and that it also had a mini fridge and microwave, in addition to Keurig. No complaints. The most minor feedback is that the water pressure in the shower was low and it was quite difficult to pull the thing to turn the shower on. Staff was friendly and helpful and room was cleaned every day Hotel was clean and comfortable, and I loved the shared spaces.
Being a solo female traveler, I picked this hotel based on reviews about safety and area, and felt safe, even when walking in the early morning and after dark. The hotel is midway between Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. Just keep in mind that from San Francisco International, while you can get to the hotel via public transportation, it may take up to 90 minutes and involve at least one transfer. It wasn't the cheapest option, but I went with Uber to use my time wisely. I did the Big Bus Hop-on & off, and stop #1 is on the same block as the hotel. I was able to get anywhere via public transportation. It was a little tricky to figure out at first, but I used the app Citymapper.

Great location near the water. Walking distance to the ports where they do tours to Alcatraz or cruises under the Golden Gate Bridge. I was able to walk to Lombard street also (be mindful of the hills). I felt safe being a solo female traveller walking around the streets near the hotel as it was a very touristy area. Negative- the rooms aren’t very sound proof. Can hear people walking down the hallway at all hours of the day/night, or walking outside down the street/ the trams running at night and in the morning. Can hear if the room next to you are having a shower/ washing their hands through the pipe system.

The experience was horrible to check in early for two hours. They were going to charge $75 so of course we opted not to do that when we finally got in our room. Our AC did not work. It was hot and when the AC tried to kick in it made a loud banging noise that we had to hear All night for two nights and then the refrigerator in the room did not work the walls in the bathroom had toothpaste bladder on them in the light in the room had exposed cords that looked like they are a fire hazard.. location was amazing but hotel was not!
