Four Seasons’ two San Francisco hotels [Market Street, and ‘Embarcadero’ on Sansome] both get it right in the little and the big things.

Front desk staff are always friendly, helpful and thorough. They found me a room for early check-in at noon so I could change and go hiking with friends. Same for the doormen- Rolando greeted me by name each day. Embarcadero rooms are bright & sunny, with beautiful views of the city and the bay. Blackout curtains if you need to sleep off jet lag. Every room I’ve stayed in has been spacious with couch, worktable, 2 chairs, coffee table, and ottoman. Plenty of lights for reading and plenty of outlets for your devices. Large room safe. And while at most hotels I have to ask for more hangers, that’s never the case here. Room has a coffee/espresso maker, and they thoughtfully provide an electric kettle so tea doesn’t taste like coffee. Housekeeping does a thorough job twice a day [don’t forget to tip the hardest working folks in any hotel :) The gym is one of the largest & best equipped hotel gyms I’ve ever seen, and there are Equinoxes and Orange Theory nearby. [Market Street property has an attached Equinox with free admission for hotel guests at that property.]

For those who know SF, this is a fairly new property, opened during the pandemic, in the space that used to be Loew's, which used to be a Mandarin Oriental. The location is nice because it's fairly discrete and set slightly back. When you walk in, it's clear that this hotel's restaurants are intended almost exclusively for guests. The lobby is small, the restaurant is pretty simply laid out, and the bathrooms (one each for men and women) must be unlocked with your room card to open them.

We were given a room on an upper floor with a fantastic view of the bay. Everything still felt new and fresh, and they provide thoughtful amenities like fruit.

Service was classic Four Seasons service - friendly, attentive, efficient and helpful. I spent a couple hours in the bar area with a friend, having coffee in the mid-afternoon, and someone checked in on us every so often, and we were never made to feel like we were overstaying. Whereas many places would have put us at a table for two (even if the place was empty as it was when we were there), they gave us a large booth that was big enough for us to sit slightly apart (which is always welcome in these pandemic times).

The only complaint we had was that we had a clunky air conditioning unit that rumbled like a fog horn in the room a couple times during our stay. To be fair though, we didn't say anything until we were checking out because we only stayed one night. I imagine they will attend to it, but it was a reminder of how old the building itself is.

The property had clearly been planned pre-pandemic when SF was bursting at its seams. I really hope that they will be able to make it.

With the Four Seasons name and this wildly photogenic location going for it already, this property comes with serious expectations. Luxury? Sure. Beauty? Of course. Individualized attention? Absolutely.

But what made my stay at the Four Seasons at Embarcadero truly indelible was the sense of intimacy that’s so often lacking in high-end hotel chains. Book this hotel and you’ll be perched high amidst the iconic architecture of San Francisco—either nestled in fog or bathed in sunlight, with bridges and water and City all around—but you’ll feel like you’ve found the world’s fanciest secret getaway.

There are no long, dreary hallways here, nor is there a colossal, intimidating lobby. The scale is akin to a private club... a boutique hotel, essentially, but with the resources and experience of a global chain to draw from to perfect the experience.

The small army of staff that makes this place run so seamlessly manages the fine balance of attentiveness without intrusiveness, making you feel looked after rather than watched.

Furnishings and materials are all first-rate, as you’d expect. Everything you see, everything you touch has been considered and made beautiful. Room service was wonderful (if you’re like me, lingering over a full breakfast in your room is an irresistible indulgence).

If you’re in the mood to explore the city, access to public transportation could hardly be easier—exit the front door, turn left, walk a couple of blocks, and you’re at the Montgomery St. BART station.

The Four Seasons is not bashful about pricing… but, considering the incomparable location, the refinement of the service, and the utter beauty of the property itself, it’s a bargain. Easily my favorite hotel in San Francisco.

Highly recommended.

I really debated whether to give the hotel 3 stars or 4 stars. It is a nice property, but I will explain why I went with 3 stars below.

I used Amex's Fine Hotels and Resorts program to book my stay, which includes several benefits ($100 food and beverage credit, $60 for breakfast, early check-in when available, guaranteed late 4pm checkout, and a room upgrade when available). I booked a Deluxe Room and I assumed the room upgrade would be to the next level up, meaning a bigger room. By the terms of the program, participating hotels are only asked to upgrade to the next category up. I learned this property, however, has MANY categories of rooms -- the vast majority of which are really the same room just with slightly different views. That is a weird way to think of what constitutes an upgrade -- it assumes the view makes a huge difference to you. Moreover, many hotels I've stayed with will often make the experience special for you, if they have the inventory to do so. When I checked in, I learned I had been "upgraded" -- from a Deluxe Room with a "City View" to a Deluxe Room with a "Bay View." So I had the same room with a slightly different view. I had checked the inventory of the hotel for the time of my stay and they had at least half a dozen suites available. I told the receptionist I was disappointed at what they considered to be an upgrade, so she changed my room to a "Premier Room," which is basically the same size but on the top floor. Since I had already complained, I wasn't going to argue with them -- technically they upgraded me "several levels" at that point. So I go up to my room, and I never once was asked whether I was happy with it -- standard practice in these situations at nice hotels. The view from the room was nice, but it was just a regular room. It would have been one thing if the hotel was fully booked, but it wasn't. I think this was a huge missed opportunity to make my stay special. They lost a star for that, and I have no plans to stay here in the future.

They lost the other star because the gym is just standard in terms of equipment. Pretty much every basic hotel has a gym like this. This one is just more nicely maintained. The $60 credit is also not enough for two people to eat breakfast (a promise of the Fine Hotels and Resorts program); I spent around $80 just for myself. And finally, there are only two elevators, so going up and down can be slow.

No coffee pods or creamer in the coffee pods/creamer box next to the coffee maker - had to bring up from downstairs. Turndown came very late, we were already asleep. The shades aren’t automatic, so you must walk around to all of them tugging at multiple cords on each to open or close, takes about 10 min for the whole room. Wi-Fi has been spotty today, mostly out, and when I called downstairs they simply said “yeah, sorry, it’s being spotty…” so I’ve lost a ton of work that couldn’t save due to their WiFi and can’t work at all now! No pool or spa. Dining is meh.

We hesitated for a long time about choosing our hotel in San Francisco. Between the Fairmont at Nob Hill or the Argonaut Hotel on the quays. But without hesitation, for us, the Four Seasons Embarcadero is the best choice for San Francisco. We saw the other two hotels, which are very beautiful hotels with certainly more charm than the Four Seasons but the first is located on the heights so access is a bit sporty unless you take a cable pass because which passes in front and the other is really not well placed, the area is very touristy and not very interesting. The Four Seasons seemed well located to us (close to the quays, the Chinese and Italian districts, Nob Hill and Russiian Hill…, we did everything on foot, except the Golden Gate much further away) and in a quiet area. And above all, no other hotel offers such views of San Francisco Bay. It’s breathtaking, magical! From our hotel room we watch the sunset over the Golden Gate and Alcatraz then gradually we see the mist rising and the city lights coming on: MAGIC!!! We have done quite a few luxury hotels with views in some big cities (Tokyo, Vancouver, New York, etc.) but this one is number 1! Obviously, it all depends on what you are looking for. There aren't really any other services in the hotel other than the beauty of the views from the room. There is no SPA, no lounges where you can rest or have a drink, no restaurant on the top floor where you can have dinner or breakfast, but there is really top-notch room service! Having dinner at sunset in your room with a view like this is unique! This will remain a highlight of our trip to Califormia. It should be noted that the hotel rooms are very recent and that a quality restaurant is located on the ground floor at reception level (it is true that there are not too many dining options right next to the hotel but the always appreciated and welcome Seven Eleven is located just opposite the hotel entrance…).

I used to stay at the Palace Hotel whenever I wanted a little staycation, but it feels like all of the luxury fell out of the Palace and poured into The Four Seasons.

Four Seasons is where you want to stay if you want to feel doted on; they lavish you with customer service from the moment you pull up. Attention to detail is still a priority and you see that from the little chocolates that greet you in your room to their in-dining table service. Room Service for breakfast did not take long, it arrived with all the flatware, linen napkins and condiments you could ever hope for.

I stayed in the one bedroom suite and the room was immaculate; clean, not dusty and no mold in the showers. The view of the GGB, Coit Tower, and Alcatraz were stellar. I watched the fog roll in every evening. I never heard a peep from any of the other neighbors whilst in my room.

And the entire time I never heard one damn person say, "due to COVID, inflation, shortage of labor..."

That doesn't mean those things aren't affecting them. But, they're putting on the type of show that used to exist in hospitality where the customer is totally sheltered from how the sausage is made. If you want to feel like royalty (or a celebrity, which is the US' version of royalty)...come to the Four Seasons.

Four Seasons loyalist. Stayed for one night with friends while on route to Napa. This is unquestionably the worst FS I’ve ever stayed in (and I’ve stayed in a lot). Rooms are weirdly laid out and downmarket (think Hyatt or Marriott), but it’s the service that really did it for me. We arrived late from a flight and were hungry. It was 10:00 and restaurant was closing but it was hopping (many tables and a full bar). The bartender told us “sorry, we’re closed”. He told us we could order from Room Service. We tried. They also refused us. As we were discussing what to do, the bartender returned and threw menus down on the table. “They told me I have to take your order,” he said and stomped off. We ordered a few simple items quickly and some wine. When the food came, we asked if he could refill our wine (how hard is that?). He grudgingly gave us tiny pours, then returned to the bar and continued joking around with the regulars (or his friends) at the bar. He refilled their glasses right to the rim.

When we got to the rooms, we discovered that our 2 Queens room, which they confirmed when they gave us the keys, had 1 king. It also had someone’s old leftover food in the mini bar.

Breakfast was included. When the bill came it was $250 (for 3) with $72 for 6 coffees. It exceeded our breakfast credit (because….coffee should cost $80). I’ve never stayed at a Four Seasons that didn’t honor the breakfast credit and INCLUDE coffee. They grudgingly removed the $72 coffee charges at the desk after we pointed out that our experience had been kind of lousy from beginning to end.

As a final kick in the pants, they charged us $374 for the minibar after we left. We hadn’t used the minibar because…you remember….. the leftovers. When we called and pointed out the error, they offered to remove half the charge.

I am not exaggerating any of this. It didn’t go unnoticed because we received an email the next day from the manager apologizing for our suboptimal experience. (This was before they charged us for the minibar and then argued about taking it off the bill).

All I’m saying it this. Be forewarned. The rooms are cheap and the service sucks. This is a Marriott with a Four Seasons costume on.

Excellent stay with an amazing view from the 38th floor. The Four Seasons never fails to impress with its Euro style bathroom setup, comfortable beds and stylish rooms. The overhead heaters outside the front doors are an excellent touch on a chilly night and the area is busy but safe.

I am unsure on that BUT if you call the Hotel directly I am sure they can clarify the policy. The hotel is extremely beautiful and has the best views in SFO so try to work out the credit card thing. You are smart to figure it out now and I am sure you can work the hold out where it will work for you. You are going to love your time at the hotel and in SFO. Cheers.

Hi, I can’t remember about the taxes exactly but I’d count on them charging extra. And they put a hefty hold on our card too during check in as standard policy. That aside, the service is truly 5 star. My favorite hotel. There’s no airport transport, but you can have the front desk arrange for a driver to take you wherever you’d like as long as one is available. We had one for a 6 hour city tour. Drops you off and picks you up while you sightsee. Takes your pictures for you and everything lol. It was the best part of the trip.
