Ratings from cruise ship travelers appear to be higher than those who have actually stayed here. Pros - 2nd floor rooms have a great view of the bay. The beach gives good access to a good snorkeling reef. The onsite restaurant is good with prices not unreasonable for the island. It is close to the NP visitors center and closest access to the park. Rooms are decent size and ours was very functional and reasonably clean. Cons - No elevator to second floor if that is an issue. The hotel is an older facility and has not been well maintained. It is clearly in need of renovation.

If you are like most National Parks visitors who are used to rather rustic accommodations, you will be fine here. If you aren’t, stay at Tradewinds in town and enjoy your city experience and traffic.

We visited from a cruise ship $10 each for a day pass……. No sun beds, so we didn’t stay long……. Tiny beach but the water was lovely…… they could make it a much nicer experience and allow for the visit to be longer and more comfortable. Pool area very uninviting

If you are reading this review, then chances are you are considering going to American Samoa. Like me, you are probably surprised to see there are really only two hotels on the island - Sadie's and Tradewinds. You might think there are more hotels that just aren't listed - nope. That's pretty much it. Maybe a few little bed and breakfast type places, btu these are the two to choose from.
I spent a week at this hotel recently (September of 2014). I spent much of my time there out on the patio or in the restaurant except when sleeping. I will say that it definitely has it's pros and cons.

Pros:
The restaurant has really good food, and the staff is friendly.
The views of the harbor are terrific.
The staff is all very friendly.
The beach area is very nice, and you can rent kayaks from the hotel for a reasonable price ($10/day) as well as snorkel gear (basic, cheap stuff...) for no cost.
There are some cute geckos that hang out outside the hotel room, and I saw some cool wildlife while there (some of the really big fruit bats, some frogs after a rainfall, etc.)
The grounds are all well kept and I saw them out there frequently picking up trash from the beach, around the property, etc.
They were able to provide shuttle rides to and from the hotel which ended up saving some money.

Notice no mention of the room? OK, that's where the cons come in.
The room was a bit of a mess. It was "clean", but still a mess. It looked like there had been a lot of construction and they hadn't really put the finishing touches together. Still some unpainted drywall, some plaster lose on the ceilings, etc.
There was a giant (roughly 1 1/2"-2") cockroach in the room that I ended up seeing and killing. Something had gotten into some of my food in ziploc bags, and I predict it was the cockroach. No signs of mouse poop or anything.
The rooms are air conditioned, but I found the air conditioner had a tough time keeping up and often the room was fairly warm. With the humidity it had a bit of a stench but nothing untolerable.

If it was in the US, I'd compare it to a low-quality motel 6 or similar. If there was another hotel nearby, once I'd had time to absorb the view, I'd probably change hotels. If I end up back there, I'll likely stay at Tradewinds, which has no real scenery nearby but is also a much nicer hotel from what I saw of it, similar to a Hampton Inn or along those lines...

It’s a short walk from the cruise terminal to Sadie’s by the Sea bar and hotel. Cold New Zealand Steinlager or local Samoan Valimia beers were $5 each in February 2024.

Food looked tasty but we didn’t try it. Both locals and tourists were eating and enjoying drinks and food in the restaurant.

Both indoor and outdoor seating with views of the harbor are available.

A public beach can be accessed a short walk further down the road from Sadie’s.

To access Sadie’s from the cruise pier, turn left from the cruise port along Route 1. Google maps indicates it’s a 5 minute walk from the cruise terminal.

You can also ask to stop here if you are taking a taxi tour of the island.

Although the hotel is in need of major renovations, the rooms were large, comfortable and had great views from our balcony. Most outstanding feature was the friendly and exceedingly helpful staff. The location was perfect for visiting the sites nearby and shopping and restaurants were all walkable. Having a cafe/restaurant on site was great. There is a beach and swimming pool.

Mostly, the staff was fine, however we weren't provided fresh towels the first time we requested them. Everything about the facilities is worn and dingy. There is bug spray provided in the room. Overpriced (our local guide named a suggested price rate and we were paying $50 over that) with trash and litter around the premises. Rooms aren't that large and everything's at least 30+ years old.

The experience is somewhat sad and depressing as this was likely a nice facility when it was new.

Restaurant portions are generous, food is fine but not anything special. Prices not terrible considering you're in a remote location.

Stay here as a last resort if you can't find anything else.

Simple hotel with friendly staff and a great location! The museum and ocean center are nearby. Great snorkeling, relaxing pool, and lovely restaurant. Mini fridge, coffee maker, hot pot, wine opener were all in the room. Decent wifi, good airport shuttle, and rental car’s available.

Room is infested with cockroaches and bugs. Sink was clogged upon checking in. Floor was sticky and dirty, washed feet in shower to confirm this. Front receptionist was terrible, attitude problem. Worst, the management defends the behavior of the staff and unapologetic. Curtains old and sliding glass door malfunction. Insufficiency lighting in rooms. Dated and needs major renovations. Telephone instrument in room inoperable. Have to resort using cellular phones for communications.

There are basically two hotels. One is near the airport and Sadies by the Sea is conveniently in town. That's where the benefits ends.

The place should be condemned. It is so beyond disgusting. I had to look at four different rooms. None were any better.

The place has so many bugs that they put a can of raid in the bathroom. There were two hairs in my bathroom. The furniture is not maintained. There is dark stuff around the toilet, grommets are missing in the shower. When I complained, the manager told me I was too demanding, and I must be from the states. The photos of the people lying relaxing by the pool must be from another era. That is not what it looks like.

How do we book. I tried emailing and no reponse
Answer from Tom-Tee-Sadies

Hi Tia, Sorry the room pics are not adequate on our website. I'll have better pictures posted ASAP. Meantime, Sadie's by the Sea are queen-queen and K-single only. All rooms are the same size. Sadie Thompson Inn does have one "Family Room" which has 2 -Queen beds plus a hide-a-bed sofa. What ages are the children?
Answer from Tom-Tee-Sadies
Pago Pago, American Samoa
Theoretically best time is May through October which is "Trade-winds" season., although in reality there is little difference. December through March is the "Hurricane Season". Most years we do not experience a hurricane as we are in reality, on the edge of the hurricane belt. On average we experience a severe hurricane (winds to 150 mph) only once every 25 years. Temperatures are predictably 85-86 deg year 'round with 85% humidity. Temperatures seldom reach 90 deg. with the low being in the low 70's. Wi-Fi is available at various locations around the island. At Sadie's Wi-Fi is free to hotel guests. Up until now it has been a bit spotty but reasonably reliable. Service has improved dramatically in the past couple of months.
