Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The beach is literally golden. It is a long beach, no lifeguard with limited use (it would seem). This side of the island has more waves, so to speak. A great place to learn to surf. Boogie boarding along the shore line was great. Parasailing is available nearby. The days we were here featured at least a dozen people from sun up to sundown surfing. The breeze coming off of the ocean makes it a great place to fly a kite. It is a great place to spend a few hours. We spent two days utilizing one of the suites in the Malaekahana Beach Campground. The water, beach, waves, limited use and feeling of seclusion really made it a great place and a visit that we will remember. I should mention the suite was a great upgrade, higher end 'glaming' Benefits; electricity, open shower for after beach, running water, toilet in the suite (mark this a luxury), fire ring in the yard, it comes with a picnic table, and we did see security of some sort prior to nightfall and several times by the next day. Drawbacks; the lady at he desk was a turn off (while not rude, wasn't friendly at all), $10 for perhaps .34 cu ft of ironwood that isn't seasoned (not a great deal even in Hawaii), outdoor toilets needed attention.
We were 75 feet from the beach and at no time did we feel that we were in any danger that several others have posted about. Overall, I would do it again in a heart beat...

This is the perfect spot for a family camping trip! Quiet, peaceful and excellent location right on the spectacular Malaekahana Beach. Great fun for families, couples or individuals. The campgrounds are well maintained with clean bathrooms and multiple showers/water sources that make the camping experience smooth and easy. Main gate closes shortly after sunset, which is great for night time safety as well. Our children were running around freely and we saw campground staff moving around the property during the day and after dark. Highly recommend this spot!!

The campground is five stars for its location — such easy beach access. Our campsite itself was clean. But the campground itself? ::grimace:: While it advertises flush toilets and showers, but don't be fooled into thinking there are clean facilities or a shower block/building: the showers are completely out in the open and are for rinsing off only, the port-a-potties were full, the flush toilets are in their own elevated buildings and, outside, smell as bad as any pit toilet, and there's not hand sanitizer or soap anywhere to be found.

The camp store closes at 4:30, and you better arrive before 7pm!

I rented a van to explore the island and spent four days at this campground. I was traveling solo so was a little apprehensive at first, but I met some nice people camping near me and was only feet away from the beach! I stayed there Tuesday-Friday and the beach was hardly busy at all! If you are car camping be sure to book early and get space V5! I dont think I was prepared for all the chickens, but loved having them around. Please note that you WILL get woken up by the roosters! :)

I found the check in process to be easy and the staff friendly and responsive. There had been reports in other reviews of sketchy people around the campground, but I didnt encounter anyone that made me feel unsafe. The bathrooms are fairly clean, but bring your own TP. The showers are outdoors and COLD, so be prepared.

Nice private campground to stay at. Seemed to be a fairly even mix of locals and travellers staying there. Campground is split into sections for tents, vans, and roofed cabins for rent.
The gates are closed 7pm-7am which means you can’t drive to your site after this. Can be a little tricky to plan your day if you want to park at your site again but all in all it makes for a very private and quiet campground.
Surf board, boogie board rentals are available. There’s a small camp shop with basic camp equipment and snacks. The beach is fantastic!
Would absolutely stay at this campground again.

This is a spectacular place to camp. The staff, including the Security Guard were friendly and on it! The grounds were nicely kept and our hale was clean with excellent ventilation. We were able to get ice and firewood when needed at their camp store which made things super convenient. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy amazing campfires.

We visited the island back in 2018 for our honeymoon. Rented a 1985 VW Westfalia and travelled the island for two weeks. This campground was our home base.
We stayed on Lot #5 and would recommend! The beach is great and plenty of surf.
Many amenities in the surrounding area. Haleiwa is approx 20 min drive.
If you're looking for a great spot to camp on the island this is the place. Paddle, surf boards, and bikes avail for rent. The only dilemma i'd say was that the main gate would close at 7pm. Not sure if this is still the case...

This place is such a magical spot. I camp here at least 3 times a year. The girls in the front office are always kind, pleasant. and very thorough. The campers are respectful to each other and the workers are helpful. I definitely would recommend camping here if you’re planning to come to
Hawaii or for just a weekend getaway. .

We stayed 5 nights at FOM during the independence day holidays. This is definitely the best camping area on the island. Don't go to state parks, they are full of bums and creepy looking individuals. FOM was safe, we didn't see anyone sketchy. The place is clean. We rented a place for a tent so cannot comment on the conditions of the yurts and cabins. Since we were in a tent - no bugs. And we haven't seen any roaches or centipedes, only flies could be a bit of a bother.
We didn't really appreciate all the chicken and especially the roosters, which were noisy starting at 4-4:30am. Bring super ear-plugs. If you come as a large group, ask for cites in 2 or 3 area. The cites in area 1 are more private. 1E is very large and is separated by two paths and trees from other camps. 1G and 1F are closer together. 1H is also large and secluded. If you stay in 1E,G or F, use the bathroom close to the surf camp. It's cleaner and people rarely use it. The shower close to 1E has warmer water than in the showers by the beach. This shower is also more private, so you can remove your bathing suit while showering.
The beach is great, no rocks, the waves were moderate and the water very warm.

How does one reach this site from Honolulu by public transit?
Answer from tematabay

Yes, the campground is closed from 7 to 7. There are some food truck restaurants within walking distance, but most of them close early too. You can park your car next to the office and well off the road, but the gate to the cabins and campsites is closed. There is a supermarket to the north (about 5-10k) so you could get some food there to eat at your cabin at night. We just settled into the routine and it was fine

The mattress was fine. We just stitched up a couple of queen sized sheets so that we have "sleeping bags" and it was fine. Took a little getting used to - but what a beautiful place.

You'll have to hire a car and drive. Driving is pretty much your only option around the island unless you don't plan on leaving Waikiki.
