Detailed Reviews

Hono Koa is a is a great small resort with lots of personality. The rooms have beautiful décor. Most of the rooms have great views of the pool and Pacific with unforgettable sunsets. It was such a joy to watch the sunsets from our balcony and by the pool. We had a 2 bedroom unit (204) that was laid out great. They have elevators, so no walking up steps with heavy suitcases. They also have a couple of carts that you can use for your luggage. The staff is very friendly and responsive to requests. We needed a couple of things and they were very responsive. The pool area has a great pool and hot tube along with very nice cabana style lounge chairs at no extra cost. They also have 2 gas grills available for use.
There are a couple of downsides to know about. First, the resort is on the Pacific, but does not have direct access to the beach. We heard that the beach washed out a few years ago during a storm. Another downside is that there is no AC in the units thought they have fans in the bedrooms and common area along with fan on a stand that you can put in your bedroom. This was not a problem for use since the temperature was rather mild at nights while we were there. We left the windows open and ran the fans which made it fine since it cools down at night. We enjoyed leaving the windows open at night and let the sound of the waves put us to sleep. Our room also had a stacked style washer and dryer which was very helpful. There were 2 full sized bathrooms in each bedroom.
We highly recommend this beautiful little resort and would like to stay there again some day.

Overall, even despite conditions, we had a good vacation. We were there during the fires, but this review is regarding our stay before the fires started. The units were clean, although they were very dated. The furniture and appliances were old, and there were ants in the kitchen. We let maintenance know and they sent someone to spray, but we eventually got our own spray. Repairs are also needed in the bathroom we used. The shower door was broken. But my major complaint was that there was no air conditioning in the units. They provided us with additional fans, but it was still very warm in the units. The staff was helpful, although the office closed at 5. It is not what I am used to. If they fix up the facility and put in some air conditioning, it would be the perfect location since every room has an ocean view.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The pool and grounds are well kept. Sadly, the tile floors in our unit were so filthy, we had to wash them to avoid getting our feet dirty. The kitchen and bathroom cabinets are painted over and the paint is peeling off in sheets. The living room furniture has no cushioning left and is very uncomfortable. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of towels, detergent and soaps and lotions. Nice view of the sunset. Really, this resort would be very nice if updated.

The title says it all. We had a 4th floor unit. The cleaning staff did an amazing job keeping the place cleaned. It was spotless when we checked in. It is very outdated though. Since a storm washed out their beach there is no beach access and the pool is pretty cold for a resort, and when we asked about the midweek cleaning of the unit the front desk lady was rude in explains they don’t have enough staff and would not do it. Unfortunately for these reasons I would not stay here again.

I am confused that this is rated a silver crown resort. It is none of these: Providing outstanding vacation experiences for RCI subscribing members - NO. Met or exceeded specific standards in the areas of unit housekeeping - NO - , unit maintenance -NO-, resort maintenance -NO-.
RCI lists onsite activity: Beach - this is not correct, there is no beach or beach access onsite or in the immediate environs.
Very bizarre place that has no one on site between 5pm and 8:30am. No concierge on site at any time, you have to call or go to affiliate resort. Just really a one building and pool kinda place. If you have an oceanview room, that is a definite plus, we loved that part.
We had a great view and expected no A/C. Had previously had an oceanfront unit in Hawaii without and managed but this unit did not have very good airflow and we were way too warm. Had to have the front door wide open and the dirty ceiling and tower fans blowing to get any movement.
The furniture including the beds were all dated and uncomfortable. The cabinets and countertops are newer. The unit was not very clean upon arrival and bugs were a daily appearance, we had to keep out food sealed and dry goods in the fridge. It did not feel clean, and upon arrival I had to wash away someone else's hair before using the shower, wipe the glass kitchen table top that was full of prints and good and wipe down the front of the fridge, also yucky. The whole place just needs some genuine love and quality renovations.
No coffee filters or salt and pepper for those who may be accustomed to that.
On the plus side, they offered a lei making class at no charge and the people there were pleasant, and the location was pretty good.
Rating the service is difficult because the service received while a person was on site was ok, but there isn't someone there all the time so I rated it lower for that reason. I understand that staffing is short at this time due to the tragic fire last year so we didn't bother getting upset about anything, my review is just reporting the current situation.
My family of 2 50- adults, one 40 year old adult and 2 early 20s adults rated it overall 5/10 based on all our RCI stays.

Spent a week at the Hono Koa in a 2nd floor Hala unit. It was clean and well stocked, comfortable and quiet. The view was amazing. Cooking on the grill every night you watch the turtles swim by, earlier in the year you can see the whales from your lanai. We walk to the beach park and enjoy the tidepools and local feel. The park is right across the street from the Farmer's Market and a great coffee shop so you can have breakfast and eat at the beach.

This was my last leg of our family trip.
Upon check in, everything looks fine although furniture looks dated. No AC is fine, as the breeze from the balcony is enough. Then the nightmare starts. We started to see roaches coming out, from the living room, bedroom, dining room, and the kitchen. Since we check in around 7PM, there was no staff to help. The phone call was redirected to one of their sister resorts, Sands. I ended up the night without sleep as each time I step out of my bed, I killed a roach, over 10 times at least. The next morning at 8am, spoke to Donna 1st thing front office opened up. Was told they will get me a room on their sister resort, they will just need to clean the rooms up.
While waiting, called up my timeshare company, Interval, for any help. They were able to get me another resort, 5 minutes away.
No bugs or any other issues on that resort. By the time we packed and about to leave, I was then informed that the rooms were ready....no thanks. That was around 12.
I have traveling using timeshare for over 20 plus years and have seen my shares of good and bad units. I can tolerate broken machines, dated furniture and a few bugs here and there, but the roaches kept coming out. Also, they do not have a security guard in sight.
The only good thing was Donna, she was very friendly. Didn't give me any excuses and contacted their sister resort right away. Even suggest to me to contact the time share company.
As for this resort, stay away.

Completely unacceptable. Randomly show up without proper warning at 1pm to spray pest control all over our belongings. Our toiletries, our 4 and 6 year old’s toothbrushes, our suitcases and clothes. Then banned us from our room for 2 hours during nap time and ruined the rest of the day/trip. Despicable. This inconceivable inconvenience to save themselves a service fee to not do this in between guests during checkout, we only paid $5,500 for our two bedroom Ocean View Suite, pathetic.

This resort is right on the Pacific Ocean. It is kept up very well and we enjoyed our stay. You are not able to swim or snorkel here, but there are areas close by that you can. There is no air conditioning available, but the ceiling fans and other fans available are ample.

This is an older property, but our unit was plenty big enough with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the furniture was nice. The kitchen was a bit small but functional. We were the farthest back from the ocean that you could be, but we were only there a couple of days so it didn’t matter too much
The person working at the complex was very friendly and helpful with information.
The main problem is the fact that there are no air conditioners in this entire complex! They offered us plenty of fans to use, but that does not replace air conditioning. Of course we were not notified of this when we booked the room.
I would never stay at this place ever again nor recommend anyone stay there.

The beaches are nice. Easy to snorkel & swim. Although, there can be shark attacks, figure due to whales & babies, but abnormal. There's plenty of fun beaches to go to. Have fun.
Yes, it is dated and NO A/C!!, but the staff goes above and beyond to help. We had a unit on an upper floor and if too hot we just opened the main door and balcony slide doors and had a nice cross breeze plus several fans they gave us. The only construction I noticed was supposed to be on the seawall (it was just roped off) so there was no ocean or beach access on site. The view was awesome and it is a good location near all the "rich and famous" resorts and beaches. There is an elevator so I would ask for an upper floor. Lower floors have no view to speak of. Pool was well maintained as were the grounds. Hope you have a great time
They are working on it in January and It should be done
I can't tell you how late it's open but we arrived after the office was closed; it didn't matter. There is a phone and a lock box right by the door and they will leave everything you need in there. They will send you instructions Visa email. It was simple and painless.
