My husband and I rented a campervan to see the island. We stayed at Salt Pond park for two nights and Kumu Camp for 3 nights. Kumu Camp was a much better facility to stay at. There are private showers, hand soap in the bathroom and there is a much more quiet crowd that stays there. At Salt Pond there were loud parties going on well into the night, which was not for us. So at Kumu Camp we were able to enjoy our quiet nights by the ocean.

I am a mid-thirties female, and I was traveling solo for my adventure in Kauai (first time visiting Hawaii). I was in campsite 14 for 4 nights and felt very safe during my stay. The property was quite and offers a lot of amenities not seen at other campgrounds (morning coffee, Reiki healing sessions, table / chairs / wind break at each camp site, community cooking / gathering / fire-pit areas, a small gift shop). The beach was very relaxing, and if you walk south of the lifeguard tower there is a decent snorkeling spot with a shower to rinse off when you get out of the water. If you don't have a car, you can walk to the general store for a poke lunch, then cross the street to get a smoothie. Donna and Dave were awesome campground hosts!!! I was grateful to stay here because the people were very nice, the property was clean, and with the money I saved on a hotel I was able to do more excursions on the island.

The best place to stay on the island! This is a campground (with glamping options) on a local beach so if you are expecting something else, look somewhere else. If you want to wake up every morning on a sunrise beach with a beautiful tropical river running by, this is the place for you. We’ve stayed in both the tentalows and the yurt, all are extremely comfortable and all of our experiences have been nothing short of amazing. The people who run Kumu are so kind and hospitable I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else in Kauai. Also, make sure to stop at whalers general store right outside the campground, everyone there is incredibly sweet, and the fresh poke is so good it’ll easily become a daily stop.

We have been camping at Kumu camp for seven days.
This is a nice spot to camp while you are travellig on a budget.
However, we have to say that 5 of the 7 nights there have been loud noises coming from cars racing in the beach and from people partying in the abandoned house next to the camping. This happened during the night (between 1 and 4 pm), and not only woke us up, but also made us worry about the security (we saw these people walking in the campground during the day).
The restrooms are similar to those found in state parks, sometimes with hot water showers.
2 of the 7 days there has been a huge plague of flying insects (termites), that obligued us to stay inside the tent for a couple of hours.

As the other reviews pointed out, there are some folks revving their engines up and down the beach and fireworks at all hours of the night. We stayed in bungalow 8, which is further from the beach. So while we could hear them, it was low impact.

Overall we enjoyed our stay. The campgrounds are more expensive and less primitive than campgrounds in Europe. So if that’s your expectation, you will be disappointed. However, everything in Hawaii is expensive. You won’t find cheaper accommodations than these unless you’re camping in a state park. (We stayed in Kauai for 13 nights, so I saved quite a bit from camping out a few days before going into a hotel while still being able to sleep on a bed.) We didn’t use the camp kitchen as Kapaa is just 15min down the road with food options, but it seemed clean enough to me. The bathrooms weren’t immaculate, but we’ve seen far worse. As far as hot showers, between the two of us, 7 of our 8 showers during our stay had hot water. My favorite parts were falling asleep to the sound of the ocean, looking up at all the stars from our patio area, and watching the different morning colors as the sun came up right outside our door.

We’d stay here again. If you’re used to roughing it, this is a great place to stay. Just find a spot further from the beach. But, if you’re looking for consistent electricity, hot water, and wifi, perhaps look elsewhere.

We stayed 6 nights at Kumu Camp (had a hard time finding campsites as many of the campgrounds on the island are closed) and had a wonderful time. We were two young women traveling together and felt safe and met several lovely people. There is a nice protected cooking area with charcoal grills (bring all your own equipment) and the area we parked our camper was fairly private. Coffee and tea in the morning was a real highlight, lots of folks sitting together chatting and starting their day. Great way to get recommendations for the island as well! Bathrooms were super clean and got decent hot water. Location is amazing for exploring the north and east side of the island, and not terribly far for the south and west side. Donna was so welcoming, thanks so much!!

Our bungalow was enough room for the two of us using the furnished queen bed with a bottom sheet only and comfortable pillows, a 2 drawer nightstand, and two straight-backed chairs. There were a couple hooks on wall and we mentioned maybe putting up more, which the host seemed inclined to do. One thing we noticed- NO BUGS in our bungalow! On the mainland we always had some kind of bug camping!
Some bungalows had attached outside cold showers (to rinse sand from your feet etc) our bungalow was #4 (Palea) and it did not. Since this campground is steps from the beach, be prepared to walk on sand everywhere you go in camp.
The shower house showers & floors could be cleaner, but toilets were clean.
There are chickens all thru camp, but you are in Kauai!
We loved the laid back atmosphere and tasty coffee provided each morning by the friendly and accommodating host. Thank You.

I was very excited to stay at Kumu Camp because it was private and many of the campgrounds on the island are still closed. I assumed give it is more expensive and private it would be a pleasant experience. I could not have been more wrong. I do not think I got 1 second of sleep while camped there. First, music played late into the night from other guests, dogs that were staying on the property barked all night. Before booking this property you should know there is no separation between spots, you are right next to each other with no barriers. We listened to a baby wailing from an adjacent cabin and had to witness someone leave their dog tied to a bush most of the day without water. There is no check in and I never met camp host though I see that many others found them to be around. The most important thing people should know before booking is that this site is on a beach that is VERY popular for ALL NIGHT partying. I don't think 20 minutes went by where a loud vehicle was not driving back and forth across the beach in front of the property. People hang and play music all night. And if there is ever a break in that someone's dog starts barking. It's best to just camp along the road or a state campground, staying at Kumu Camp was truly a miserable experience.

The place is very nicely located right by the sea. Donna always replied to my emails and helped with my booking (we had problems with the credit card). The whole facility is kept very clean. Too bad we thought there was little shade and that the cars drove along the beach.
We were there by jeep with rooftop. In the restroom it has 2 toilets, 2 showers with warm water and 1 lavabo in each of the women and men. Personally, I find this too little considering that all the people from the “Hüttli/Yurts” also have to use this restroom. Especially just a lavabo for hand washing, shaving, brushing teeth etc. is far too little.
It has covered outside a sink where you can wash your dishes, since apparently not many cooked it was always free when we washed our dishes.
A very nice gesture from Donna we found the free coffee in the morning. Also the internet worked great at the coffee house in front. There you can also load your Händy.
Near the restroom there is a large covered space with tables and chairs to lounge around and another socket.

One thing to remember, however, is not to compare the site to European, Australian or New Zealand campsites! If you do, it is too basic/rustic and far too expensive.

We enjoyed our 4 nights here.

We stayed in the sunrise yurt and we were really looking forward to camping beachside. I was imagining relaxing on the lounge chairs and watching the kids play and my husband surf at the beach. But unfortunately there were high winds blowing straight onshore the whole time we were there. The ocean was very stormy and unsafe, and nobody was swimming at all. We were told that occasionally the waves come up all the way to the beachside campsites, which made us a little nervous. It was unbearable to be out on the deck of the yurt, or really to spend any time at the campsite at all. They yurt itself was cosy and spacious, but kind of grungy and not well-equipped. For example the fridge leaked and the one light was so dim we still needed our headlamps inside. The beds were pretty comfortable and the sheets were clean. For camping it’s pretty decent but it is definitely rustic and in need of repairs. The campsite staff were really friendly and helpful and refunded us when we left early due to the high winds. I’m sure this is a nice place at the right time of year, but be warned that during the winter can be very windy and wet and the beach is not safe for swimming.
