Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were going to hike up to Seneca Rocks, which was a fantastic place to go to. This is out in the middle of no where and we happened on this little hotel. It is a tired hotel, needs a lot of up dating. But, it is acceptable to crash for the night. It was clean, but the things in the room are old. The TV had 6 channels and it was a model that didn't work with a remote! The managers take off to clean the rooms of a resort that is supposed to be near by during the day. So, if you need anything during the day you are out of luck. The managers were very helpful during the evening. You will pretty much only be in this area if you are hiking up to Seneca Rock or going into the near by cave. So, if you need a place to sleep for the night this place is inexpensive ($54) for a double. The door to the room used a real key and didn't even have a chain on the door! I would recommend this room if you just want a place to crash, but it is nothing special.

The 4-U Motel and Restaurant is a 24-unit motel and family style diner just down the road from Seneca Rocks. The motel appears to be on its way out. That's a shame, because it's a cute little place where you can open the back door to your room (yes, each room has a front and back door) and watch cattle grazing on the hillside beyond a white board fence. We pulled in to dry out on the last night of a camping trip gone rainy.

The folks at the restaurant, where you register for the motel, were friendly and helpful, and the price was around $62 including tax. Decor, bathroom and bedding were dated but acceptable. The antique TV only got 3 or 4 of the advertised 7 or 8 stations, but that was OK with us.

What wasn't OK was the overwhelming odor of air freshener. My husband finally found the source, unplugged the darn thing and put it outside. We opened the window, turned the air conditioner on, and went for dinner and a walk. But the odor persisted. If we hadn't already used the showers, we would have asked for a refund and moved on.

So...we opened both doors until we went to bed, and left the back door open all night. No use... that smell just didn't let up. A damp washcloth over my nose and mouth helped enough to make a little sleep possible. My husband lay awake thinking about setting up the tent in the grass outside our back door, but decided that $60 was too much to pay for a tent site.

A couple of years ago we stayed at Yokum's rooms over the store. Guess we'll be back at Yokum's next time. We can always drive over to the 4-U for their great home made chicken soup, mashed potatoes and pies.

While the food is still good considering the location in the mountains, the lodging facilities went down hill fast as they were trying to sell. I would not recommend for overnight stays until it is updated.

I ended up renting a very nice cabin, which I have reviewed on a separate page. When I asked my friend who teaches climbing in the area around Seneca Rocks about this motel he said that to his knowledge it has been closed for a couple years. Neither the restaurant nor the motel seems to be available at this time. There are quite a few nice cabins available between Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob and that would be my recommendation for people looking for a place to stay in this area.

My husband and I were driving to Ohio from Hampton, Va and saw the motel & restaurant on the side of the road. We pulled in to eat dinner. We had the rib eye steak, the best home fires EVER! We registered for the hotel and found it to be very pleasant and really LOVED the back door that offered a nice setting. We saw a small herd of deer feeding that night and the cattle the next morning.

We didn't care about the tv stations, as we aren't that interested while we travel. Our room had a mural of a stream and the fragrance was not overpowering. We both actually had the best night of sleep!

We ate a wonderful breakfast the next morning and had great conversation with another couple from the hotel before heading home to Ohio.
