Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I chose this hotel knowing I probably wasn't going to love the location but it was the right distance between destinations on a road trip. The location, which is basically at the end of an off ramp was not as bad as I'd anticipated. There was road noise, but not as much as I had expected. I ended up in what appeared to be an updated room, which was clean, well appointed and comfortable. The hotel itself is definitely older, but the staff was great and the room was great. The breakfast, however, was lacking at best.

Our room was beautiful with what looked like cherry wood furniture, but I'm sure it was some cheaper wood. The queen bed had a very nice comforter on it. The hotel is conveniently located next to the highway, which means you hear traffic all night long. Our room faced the civic center, meaning at 7:30 AM we had the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. To eliminate the traffic noise, we turned the hvac fan on. The water in the shower was hard to regulate between hot and cold. The door to the room doesn't seal at the bottom so a lot of light comes through from the hallway at night. We put towels down to stop the light. We noticed others on our floor had done the same as we saw towels sticking out into the hallway when we went to breakfast. The breakfast room is nice with a wide variety. Unlike other posters, we did see a big bowl of fruit. They were out of orange juice the morning we ate there. The staff was not wearing masks to prevent the spread of covid.

We have stayed here before when in Charleston. The surprise was it had been updated. It appeared to have new wall coverings and carpet. Need less to say the building was in great shape. I have posted before - if you have the bland cheese omelets and rubber sausage give me a discount for breakfast, I won't be eating any. The surprise was breakfast. It was GOOD. Breakfast burritos, scrambled eggs with chopped peppers and flavor, potatoes and all the other things that they offer. It was a nice change for breakfast.

Where to start… could not find parking in the lot. Had to park in street and area was sketchy. Room was propped open when we went up to enter upon arrival. The front desk employee blamed that on a new housekeeper. Mirrors were very dirty, desk and tables were sticky. At breakfast the next morning, the manager (?) was reaming an employee LOUDLY right by the breakfast area. Everyone who was eating could clearly hear. And the employee was loudly arguing back to her. It was awkward to say the least. We would not stay at this property again. And it made us reconsider staying at Hampton Inns anywhere, which we typically seek out because they usually are clean with a good breakfast for a reasonable rate.

Even though this is an older Hampton Inn, it is clear that they care about keeping it up. We had chosen this location because it listed guest laundry facilities, and it was handy for our plans. We found out that they do not actually have coin operated guest laundry facilities, though the housekeeping staff would allow us to use their machines after hours. (We did not take advantage of this option, but include it for future guests knowledge.) It was a little tricky to get into the parking lot from downtown, but only a little. Having notified this hotel that my husband is a celiac and needs gluten-free options at breakfast, we were bowled over with how well they met that request! The GF items were clearly labeled, separately located in the breakfast room, and there were several choices for him. We appreciated not having to worry about cross-contamination at all! Thank you, Hampton Inn Charleston - Downtown!

The carpet in my room was soaking wet. When I mentioned it to front desk all I got was excuse after excuse. I asked for a new room and was told there were none available even though I just checked in and multiple rooms on multiple floors were available.

This stay was for a weekend overnight in August 2023. Overall, this Hampton property was very clean. In the morning, they serve a good Hampton continental breakfast (with very limited fruit options). There was almost no road noise from the major roads and highway passing around the hotel, which was quite surprising.
The only reasons I couldnt give this stay a 5-star were the beds and HVAC in the room. We reserved a 2x queen bed room, but the beds were full sized and not very comfortable for 2x full sized adults (per bed). Additionally, the HVAC in the room maintained a comfortable temperature, at the expense of our sleep. Every 15 minutes, the HVAC window unit would turn on (somewhat quietly), but after 5 minutes it would get very loud for the remaining 10 minutes, which was very disruptive for sleeping.

We traveled all day and flew into Charleston WV. We were very tired and arrived just at 9:00 on a Sunday night. The night manager, Isaiah, warmly greeted us and offered suggestions for food delivery since restaurants were closed. We had a really good night's rest, the room was clean, quiet, and comfortable.
In the morning there was complimentary breakfast of omelets, roasted potatoes, cereals, oatmeal, coffee, teas and really delicious smoothies!
Everything was super clean and sanitizing stations were everywhere.
It was comforting to know they were taking great care in keeping their customers safe.

Please avoid this hotel. It has bed bugs. Stayed 7/13-14/2021. Did not see a review written a week before our stay that someone else reported bed bugs. Also, did not enjoy hearing a breakfast employee complaining that it was not in her job description to clean off tables after people had finished eating.

I have stayed at this hotel several times before and it is well managed, clean as a whistle and the staff is typically very good. Just grates me that they increased price by 75% due to some local country western act taking place nearby. Business travelers should not be gouged for that reason.
