Smithfield Station Hotel is frequently celebrated for its spacious and pristine rooms that boast comfortable beds and stunning views, although a few guests have encountered outdated amenities. The hotel's cleanliness and charming atmosphere are often highlighted, with an inviting ambiance complemented by its scenic waterfront location.
While the majority of visitors have enjoyed the hotel's value, including its praised restaurant, some have expressed concerns over additional fees and bed comfort. Amenities generally receive accolades, especially for the quality food and convenient location, and the staff's service is commonly described as friendly and professional, notwithstanding a singular issue with TV service.

There was a white comforter on the king size bed that was like sleeping under a blanket of marshmallows. I need to find out where I can buy one. Anyway, the lodge room was large, furnished nicely without being overdone, and the view from our balcony was really lovely, especially at dusk when the lights started coming on. The lobby was beautifully decorated, Christmas tree and all, and the staff were helpful and accommodating. We were celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary, and fully intend to revisit Smithfield Station in the coming months.

We love Smithfield Station. We visit several times a year. This time it was for a mixture of business and necessity. Richmond was without water for days and I needed a shower and the ability to write reports. We checked in to a Deluxe room as the price was very reasonable and enjoyed the fireplace and view of the river. The shower is modern and the bed very comfortable. It offered a desk with WiFi for my computer and breakfast was included. We will be back.

My husband and I plan a quick getaway every year, to plan and just relax after the holidays. This year we chose Smithfield Station, and wow, are we glad we did! We scored a deluxe king balcony (in the new building) on Black Friday for half price, and would have been worth triple! The bed and pillows, the comfiest, the bathroom showerwas fantastic, even a pretty fireplace! the room itself was on the 3rd floor with a gorgeous water / marina view just steps to the amazing restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner served outside( beautiful setting, heaters too) everything was spotless, super friendly staff. Main Street SF, minutes away .. can’t say enough good things. We’ll be back!

Stayed here 3 years ago during our honeymoon and absolutely loved it, so decided to return for our anniversary this year.
The lady who checked us in was extremely friendly, and we enjoyed helping ourselves to the coffee in the lobby.
Once we arrived in the room we noticed there was no refrigerator (despite one being pictured on the website of the Smithfield Station for the same type room). We went downstairs to the desk and explained we required an extra ice bucket as we needed to keep some medication cold. We got told one would sent up. A few minutes later we received a phone call to the room whereby the staff member stated “the housekeeper has confirmed she left you an ice bucket and you are only allowed to have one per room”. And that was that.
We then noticed there was only one bedside table. The housekeeper was outside the room so we asked her if we could get some sort of surface or chair for the other side of the bed. She looked very confused and instructed us to call the front desk. When we did this, the staff member stated “no, there’s no item of furniture I can bring up to you”. Whilst my wife was trying to respond that as there are two occupants of the room it would be nice to have something on each side of the bed for both of us to use during the night, the staff member just hung up the phone. Unbelievable.
Cleanliness of the room was not great. There was hair dotted around the bathroom (including all over a washcloth), mould in the kitchen sink, dust around the headboard and the armchair was stained. I have uploaded a few pictures. After both bad experiences outlined above, we didn’t dare try contact the front desk again to request this to be rectified, so we just cleaned the room ourselves.
The bed was creaky which was annoying whilst trying to sleep.
Both days we were disturbed for hours on end of what sounded like thumping coming from the ceiling above. After investigating, we discovered the laundry room was immediately above us on the floor above and was being constantly run by the hotel to clean their linen.
Breakfast was also not great. During the first morning, three of the four sausages I had contained small bones. There was also no hand sanitiser anywhere around the breakfast area, despite it being a buffet with high contact items. On the second morning whilst eating our breakfast in the outdoor seating area, we got splattered by somebody pressure-washing the furniture.
Finally we had issues with parking. We went out for a drive on Monday evening, and when we returned both car parks were overrun with customers of the restaurant, with cars queuing and fighting to find spaces to park. There really needs to be a section of the car park dedicated to residents only.
Also worth noting is that the hoteliers are pretty mean/inflexible regarding late checkout requests. Upon checking-in you are made to sign a disclaimer that you will be charged in increments of $25 per hour infringed after 11am on the day of checkout.

We stayed at the Smithfield Station when we attended a wedding in November 2022. The whole layout of the hotel is awkward and confusing. The lobby and some of the rooms are in one section. The other part of the hotel is down the ways and though the restaurant. It was a maze of stairwells to get to your room. If you have mobility issues, I do not suggest staying in this hotel at all. We stayed on the side above the restaurant. When we arrived the door to the room was unlocked and the AC was not on. The room was warm and muggy in the room. Thankfully the air turned on and the room got to a comfortable temperature somewhat quickly. The room is dated and pretty bare bones. When the restaurant is open you can smell it throughout the hotel. In the room we had 2 full size beds, a small cramped bathroom, and a window with a water view. Despite a lot of negatives, the front desk staff was extremely friendly and the room was clean. This hotel is nothing special. I wish I had read more reviews of this hotel before staying.

Response from Randy Pack, General Manager at Smithfield Station Hotel
Responded 20 Feb 2023
Thank you for your review, and we appreciate feedback on ways to improve. The original hotel rooms are located above the restaurant and were the oldest rooms on the property. Accessibility is extremely important to us, which is why we made sure to create a property map that should be handed out to all guests. When we expanded with The Lodge building and Cottages, we made sure to add an elevator and an easy floor plan. The room you stayed in was outdated, but we are in the process of fully upgrading those rooms now and they won't be recognizable. Work started this winter and we've been adding brand-new windows, individual a/c controls, new furniture, and completely new bathrooms as well. These improvements are extensive but we plan to be completed by spring and hope you'll consider visiting again.

After moving from the DC area to Chesapeake during this pandemic times, we weren’t able to take our usual vacation in the late Spring. We got a recommendation from family members who had stayed at the Smithfield Station Marina cottage and enjoyed it for us to take some much needed time to get away. We decided to go for my wife’s birthday weekend. A quick and easy drive to the marina, felt like we were completely away from any hustle and bustle to some welcomed small town living. The front desk staff were welcoming and friendly. Getting to our cottage, the parking situation was pretty crowded but workable. Walking to cottage the surrounding area was very serine and peaceful. Entering the cottage, we noticed a few stark issues: the massive musty odor in the room was overwhelming. Clearly this has been an issue because there were frebreez plug ins in the wall (empty), both ceiling fans on, the AC on high and frigidly cold, and a central oils defuser (masked the smell for a few hours until the oils ran out). Furthermore, the carpet was damp throughout the entire room, so much so that you dare not walk around in socks or bare feet. The same humidity was an issue into the bathroom which made the floor very slippery. Despite these bothersome concerns, the decor was nice and inviting. They even left a nice birthday card for my wife. We took in the hotel restaurant and the staff were very nice and food and atmosphere were wonderful. That evening we realized that there were no curtains to close (they were stapled to the window frame) to keep out the lights from the marina. We had to take a blanket and drape it over the window the next night. The next morning we weren’t able to enjoy a continental breakfast due to CV restrictions but they left a bucket with nice choices in the mini fridge. Weather and scenery nearby was fantastic so we took in the sights in the downtown area and at Fort Huger, Fort Boykin and at Windsor Park. For dinner we went to Wharf Hill Brewery which was amazing with great food and beverage choices - and very close by to the Marina. After a better nights sleep the second night we awoke to cold, windy and blustery weather so we decided to head home early instead of wait for the breakfast buffet and complimentary mamosa’s. Overall for the high price I paid for the weekend, the issues I listed made our time here less than a complete success. Clearly the hotel knew about these concerns before we ever arrived and tried to, unsuccessfully, mitigate and minimize them. Our problem was what more could we do about it since we were already staying in a premium space. Anything otherwise would be less so we decided to just suck it up and enjoy it as best as we could. Despite those disappointing points, we really did like the area, the hotel, the staff and the sites we went to see. Here’s hoping this review helps customers in making sure things are exactly what you hope them to be for the price charged

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. The room was very clean. The staff was friendly. It was nice that they provided breakfast Monday thru Saturday. The food was hot and there were a lot of choices with fruit, bagels, cereal etc. The only negative that I had was the WiFi was very intermittent and had a weak signal.

This was our first time staying and dining at Smithfield Station. The excellent service from the hotel and restaurant staff helped us have a great time. We stayed in the main building and our room was large, well-appointed and very clean. We enjoyed the Sunday Brunch and it was well attended by staff with fresh food consistently being refilled. We had an enjoyable time and we will be back.

Checking in and out is real problem unless you can get a parking space in the main parking lot. We were forced to park across the street and carry all of belongings. They need an unload/loading zone. The room was very damp. We couldn't walk on the carpet since it felt wet. I slipped on the bathroom floor. When told to front desk the nice lady said someone would look into it and that there were no other rooms in the building that we could move to. The next morning when asked about it again, the front desk said that happens to the rooms occasionally. Another guest overheard our conversation and said her room was like that as well. Tried to enjoy the balcony but it was so small and one of the chairs couldn't have been more uncomfortable. The mattress is covered with plastic so that made the bed hot and stiff. Tried to enjoy the pool but that has an overpass next to it so lots of traffic noise and the loungers are hard and very uncomfortable. Made for an unpleasant weekend.

Our second trip to Smithfield, such a lovely small town, not so far from where we live. Great getaway spot, everyone friendly and helpful. We stated on the 3rd floor above the restaurant, a few steps to climb as there is no elevator in that area, but we like it up there. Very quiet, clean and well maintained. We had a minor issue with the TV and after a call to the front desk they offered us another room, called the tv provider for assistance but the issue was resolved. Front desk person always friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant is great, guaranteed to not leave there hungry. They have tents outside for outdoor dining which is great if it's not too hot. They following all the covid rules so there's little to worry there. Even made sure I used one of there sanitized pens to sign in and they took it so it wouldn't be retouched by anyone else, these folks are on the ball. Truly enjoy and will most likely be back there again within the next few months!!!

The Captain Sinclair Suite, the top level of The Lighthouse, is absolutely the best place! Once you have stayed there, you are spoiled! The walk from there to the restaurant is maybe 50 yards? The shops and lobby are all along the area behind the restaurant. And the outside it is connected with a boardwalk type walk. The lodge rooms with fireplace and jacuzzi are newer and pretty, we asked to see one when they were being built, really nice to get one on the back side with a balcony to look out over the water.
There are more places to choose from in the Smithfield area.
