Paint Bank is really a wide spot in the road. The owners have turned the Depot and surrounding area into a lovely getaway. We arrived without a reservation after a busy weekend, but the owner was very accommodating. We stayed in the main lodge. The room was small but very clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. The room didn't come with a full breakfast but the kitchen area on the lower level was fully stocked with drinks, snacks, homemade muffins etc. A fill breakfast was available for purchase across the street at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant.

This is our second year of making this stop a part of getting our Christmas tree adventure. We drive to get our tree in nearby New Castle and head over to the Depot Lodge for an overnight stay. The first year we stayed in the Caboose which was a cozy, unique experience. From the gas stove for heat to the comfy bed and the little lit Christmas tree, we enjoyed the entire experience. This year we opted for a room in the lodge itself which was delightful! The rooms are as cozy and charming as the last time with a huge, modern bathroom and plenty of room. Everything is so clean and every amenity is thought of. Downstairs is a well equipped kitchen area with snacks, cold drinks, coffee, tea popcorn to pop, cookies in the cookie jar and all sorts of breakfast food for the morning. There’s an area with comfortable sofas chairs and a gas burning stove to relax in. They think of everything! The grounds are beautiful with a nice stream running through and a gazebo and Adirondack chairs to enjoy the view. There are other accommodations from cabins to “glamping” on their website. One couldn’t ask for friendlier people to make sure your stay is perfect. We are going to make this a yearly visit. There is so much to do in the area. Can’t wait for our visit next year!

Our family needed to stay here after some unexpected weather issues on the mountain roads. Even though it wasn't a planned stay, after arriving, we were thrilled we got to stay here. Our main point of contact was Cindy and she was an absolute pleasure to deal with. We stayed in the the Master Suite and it is super spacious and beautiful. We will be recommending to our friends and family that come through the area and we can't wait to return for a nice quiet get away.

The only game in town and the service reflects that philosophy. Paper thin walls, gravel parking lot right outside your widows and no one one the premises in the evenings if you happen to have a problem. The note on the lodge door gives you a number to call - which is worthless because other than Cellular One there is no cell phone service. The manager is a piece of work. She is totally incapable of listening to what you might have to say because she won't shut up long enough to listen. Will never return and would never recommend this place to anyone. Beautiful countryside. Enjoy day trips and stay in Covington, VA or Lewisburg, WV where there are lots of places to eat and a selection of places for lodging.

Recently stayed in the Fox Hill Cabin at The Depot Lodge in Paint Bank VA. I can't thank the folks there enough for the hospitality and in particular Cindy. All I needed to do was ask for something and it was delivered! Off the grid for sure, which was needed after this 2020 fiasco. It's a working buffalo farm, and they have lots of places to rent. Cabins, clamping, houses, and even a train caboose are for rent. Just incredible. I will absolutely be headed back there in 2021!

I was one of the visitors on the trip with Emma I. so here are some things I would like to add (Pam and Shawn):

This was not my first time in Paint Bank nor was it my first stay at a Depot Lodge cabin property. I have been coming here with family yearly since 2019/2020 and consider it a respite. I was looking forward to taking my friends here (who were first time visitors) and showing them a place that means a lot to me. I have never encountered pest issues at other cabins and I’ve been in the Fall and late Winter/early Spring before. Things happen, we UNDERSTAND that.

Overall, the thing that frustrates us is how it was handled. They knew about the extent of the problem and did not make us aware or give us a chance to cancel/forfeit the trip. I had spoken directly to Pam on the phone a few days prior to the trip as well and nothing was mentioned. Even if we couldn’t have been refunded we would have appreciated the communication and notice. It seemed like poor business practice. We weren’t (and still aren’t) asking for a comped trip or any sort of special treatment.

We did not appreciate the comment (from Pam at checkout and in the review and also from another reviewer) that was made that made it seem like we were being invalidated/dramatic. I grew up tent camping so this is not a case of “city dwellers not knowing what they were getting themselves into”. My friends also understood that it comes with being in the woods but the difference lies in stinkbugs falling from the ceiling on to where we’re supposed to be sleeping and finding them around in the kitchen area as well. Thankfully this part did not sour their opinion of Paint Bank and the cabin, and we enjoyed it as much as we could despite the constant stink bug interruptions while inside.

I never have a bad thing to say about The Depot Lodge. This will not deter me from considering staying here in the future and have already talked about coming back to other properties with family and the same friends. (Although not the Lemon Hotel like suggested because part of my personal appeal of coming to the Depot Lodge is to be away from other people). Please do not take any of this negatively. We are not saying stay aware from the Depot Lodge at all costs, we just wanted to share what was hopefully a one time grievance. Thank you.

Response from Pam Ayers, General Manager at The Depot Lodge

Again, I apologize that you didn't enjoy your stay at Fox Hill Cabin, but we don't have an infestation of stink bugs at any of our venues. We clean very carefully and spray for insects before each booking of the cabin. Our housekeeping staff said that when they cleaned after your visit, they found four dead stink bugs and that was all. They get in through the cracks and there is no way to keep them all out. The cabin was thoroughly checked before your arrival by me personally and I found no stink bugs.

I found this place on a rainy day during a solo motorcycle trip. What a surprise. It has a really rustic outdoors lodge vibe to it that was just so comfortable. They stayed late in order to check me in and were so nice.

The whole place is kept up perfectly and the grounds are spectacular.

I ended up staying an extra day and just taking a day trip on the bike and then relaxing at the lodge. It was a perfect recharge for the days ahead.

I can't wait to bring my girlfriend down here for the weekend.

Great stay and a great price.

This is a rebuttal to Emma. We have stayed at Fox Hill Cabin many times and love it there. The cabin is secluded, peaceful, and exquisitely decorated. We have always had a wonderful time no matter what time of year that we visited, and yes it has stink bugs! Stink bugs, snakes, mice, ladybugs, and all manner of creatures are inevitable when you’re in the middle of the woods! City dwellers really should stay in the city if camping is not their cup of tea!

We love staying there. We are treated like movie stars. They are very helpful when you needed it. When you stay there you are treated like family. We love going up there every year. It is really beautiful there and very quiet.

The Depot Lodge is very nice. Although there isn't a lot in Paint Bank, it is a very quiet nice place to relax. The Depot offers a continental breakfast and is very clean and quiet. There were also cookies and drinks available in the afternoon. The bed & pillows were very comfortable. Would recommend the Depot for a quiet getaway.

A continental breakfast with cereal, homemade scones, juice, coffee, was provided on their gathering room. If you want a hot breakfast you will need to go to restaurant and pay. We were fine with offerings. We planned on nice lunch in White Sulpher.
