There were a few benefits to the Copthorne Hotel. The hotel is in walking distance to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds so that was nice. The view from our second floor room was towards Bay of Islands water area. The beds were comfortable and bedding appeared to be clean and fresh smelling. We had an air conditioner which was a nice option since it was February and a bit warm.

The location is not close to Pahia town where the restaurants and ferry trips are located. You can walk over a bridge but it is 45 minutes each way. There is a shuttle but you do need to request and reserve the time. The room is outdated which isn't normally too bad but the carpet was very thin and looked dirty but it wasn't. There were bugs in the light fixtures which was unpleasant. Easy fix by maintenance but no one focused on that. The bathroom also gets humid since there aren't any fans to remove moisture but it seemed like many New Zealand hotels didn't have fans. Might be a way to conserve energy. The towels were small and thin but the shower/tub enclosure was clean.

The breakfast buffet was included in our package but the meal wasn't too good. This hotel caters to travel groups yet they don't have enough staff to clean the tables of dirty dishes and set out new silver wear. We had to clear off tables both days before we could eat. On the plus side, you can order fried eggs and get fresh, hot eggs. Also it was helpful that there were large coffee and hot water urns so you could serve yourself. Not many food choices and when the cheese and meat platters were empty, they weren't refilled in 20 minutes and then we had to leave.

The swimming pool area looked very pretty and was resort quality BUT the seagulls have taken over the pool and are floating in the water. There are feathers in the water and I would not risk swimming due to diseases which might be carried by the birds. Our wifi was included in the package and worked well. There is an in-room safe. There was a mini refrigerator which was helpful. So overall I was pleased with the room and location than the few challenges. We went to the cities of Pahia and Russell so didn't use the room much.

My wife and I stayed here while on an organized tour of New Zealand. We had spacious room #249 with drapes that wrapped around two walls. The bed was comfortable. The room had a very efficient air conditioner. There was a sofa in the room. There was a small closet, a desk, and a small dresser. There was 1 sink in the bathroom. There were individual toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body lotion) in the bathroom. There was a small kitchenette area in the hallway with a refrigerator and safe. Because the room was on the ground floor, there was an outdoor sitting area with chairs.

The in-room Wi-Fi worked well. My only complaint with the room was the poor water pressure in the shower. I don't know if the water in the shower was deliberately metered because of drought/water restrictions in the Northlands.

There was a spacious swimming pool area. There were several large pools and an outdoor hot tub. Unfortunately, seagull feathers and poop made the pools unappealing.

There were friendly bartenders at Jimmy Cook's Café Bar. There was a good buffet for breakfast in Jimmy Cook's Restaurant. The hotel is located adjacent to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds .

The hotel tries to be environmentally conscious. There was a “Going Green” hanger tag in the room, which we put on the door. That should have limited room cleaning to only making up the bed, emptying rubbish bins, and replacing any towels left on floor. However, all towels were replaced, including those we left hanging on racks.

It’s main selling point is location, which is beautiful and the grounds and pool are wonderful. However the buildings have more in common with a state high school than a four star hotel. Also it is a 30 min walk from the main bars and restaurants in town and the hotel shuttle stops at 6pm. The rooms are quite small and even our superior room still had that 70’s vintage feel. We were in the bar at 9pm when we were told they were closing because there was no one around (obviously forgetting that we were actually there), so don’t rely on a late night drink when you return from town. Check out is 10am and they will charge if you stay longer - that feels very B&B. We did eat in once for dinner and the fresh fish was delicious. Their main customers are coach parities and low grade conferences which seems to have left them feeling a bit complacent. It’s not all bad but the place needs a freshen up and a change to it’s approach if is to truly merit its 4 star rating.

This is a resort hotel, located in a lovely location on the banks of the Bay of Islands. The bar area and restaurant look out onto the Bay, so you can eat inside and look or eat outside if the temperature is right.
The room was a good size, but the only mirror was in the bathroom, which is not very convenient. I had been told that there was no air conditioning, but our room, in the Hibiscus wing, did have AC. Decor was slightly bland but not offensive. Some of the furnishings, however, were a bit worn and could do with replacement. Service was variable. Most staff were friendly and efficient, but there were a few rough edges. We ordered breakfast in our room the first day because of an early tour, but it arrived so late we could only eat half of it.
The food was good, with nicely constructed dishes, well cooked.

My wife and I celebrated a special personal occasion at the Copthorne immediately after Waitangi weekend. Although the weather was unkind to us, the staff at the hotel certainly made up for that. We were offered a room upgrade and, alongside the efficient Internet and Sky TV services this was this was most welcome as rain showers restricted opportunities for our intended itinerary.

Our room was spacious, air conditioned, clean and well maintained. In contrast to some reviews of the hotel I have read, we found all staff we met were most courteous and efficient; reception, cleaning and catering staff were cheerful and welcoming and we were pleased to meet the new manager Gordon, fresh up from Queenstown. He seemed to be everywhere, checking, greeting, responding and ensuring tidiness right throughout the hotel and grounds.

We enjoyed daily breakfast and three evening meals within the restaurant. Like many hotels in New Zealand, the Copthorne is clearly under pressure in bookings and revenue, and this restricts their menu options. However, what we had was well cooked, well presented and clearly designed to minimise wastage…..a meat carvery and various curry / stew options alongside a salad bar were the highlights in their reasonably priced inclusive buffet. Wine prices and choices are quite good.

The grounds and setting of the hotel are very good indeed, with a most attractive outdoor pool area and hot spa. The tennis courts look well maintained.

Would we return …yes, happily, but I do hope that a recovery in tourism enables the catering staff to widen their offering, they are somewhat in survival mode, like many in the industry; however, when in front of guests, their positive attitude, cheerful demeanour and helpful responsiveness to problems is excellent and I wish them all well, alongside their energetic new manager.

I stayed with a friend for two nights at this resort in a Superior Seaview Room with Twin Beds. The room thankfully had airconditioning, and all you would need in terms of facilities. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were well maintained.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is quite a dated resort. While the rooms were refurbished, the hotel grounds still look like they're from the turn of the Millennium. The pool area looked nice but the dining area and carpets definitely do with an overhaul.

To begin with the positives: Location, Location, Location. It's only five minutes drive into Paihia but in a much more tranquil location, and without any parking issues. The hotel is adjacent to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and you can't stay here without walking next door to see them. You could even hop over the fence to get into the Treaty Grounds!

The beach is really not great and shouldn't be seen as a selling point of the hotel. The water appeared to be rocky and the size of the beach is quite small. I thought with a "Seaview" stay I could just walk down and enjoy the beach as with resorts in the South Pacific, but nothing like staying in Fiji or Samoa. I ended up swimming elsewhere in the Bay of Islands during my stay. Even the beach in nearby Paihia is much nicer.

Due to the reviews I avoided the hotel restaurant so can't comment on its quality, but it did seem busy. There are plenty of nice options in Paihia though,

In short: The Seaview Room was not worth paying a full $300 NZD per night. The beach unfortunately, isn't good enough to be a selling point. It's overpriced for what you get, but if you can get a deal here then it's worth a stay.

First the good stuff. The location is fabulous, it's a lovely complex and the bed was really comfortable. The room had a lovely view but it didn't feel private as it looked out over a shared area and to get privacy there were heavy wooden shutters to close so you lost both the view and the light. No security with the door open either and the bolt to my door was broken. A smoker a few doors down meant I had to close my door too. The room was tiny with a double bed pushed up against the wall. The bathroom was also tiny and very dated and the water pressure in the shower was pathetic. The powerpoint in the bathroom didn't work with the switch damaged and looking unsafe. The cord on the iron was also worn. The breakfast buffet was unappealing, although on weekdays I was able to order freshly poached eggs. The croissants were fresh and delicious though. Staff were generally friendly and helpful, although there was an insistence on charging your credit card $10 on check-in. There are long corridors and children regularly thundered down these, and also were jumping in the spa, so not relaxing for a business stay. There are nicer accommodation options in Paihia at better prices.

We took advance of a 3 night special with Copthorne Hotels, and we weren’t disappointed. Our room had a Garden view on the first floor, which was very private and peaceful. Felt we were on a tropical holiday with all the gardens and pools.
Our special included daily breakfast and one dinner. No complaints there, buffet breakfast, with options for poached or fried eggs. Dinner was off a limited menu, however meals were delicious.
Staff all very friendly and accomodating.

first must say Staff very friendly. However some lacked training, Particularly bar staff. Left on their own with little knowledge.
No time for leisurely lie in as breakfast shut off at 9.00 coffee in urn utterly undrinkable worst ever. also bar shut at 10.00 pm just when enjoying a quiet drink
some aspects of room cleaning needed to be addressed

Chose this hotel because of its location and views. Unfortunately we chose to dine at the hotel on our last night, having being out all day. How could you go wrong with fish and chips? The two small pieces of pan-fried fish were very dry, grey and tasteless, not to mention lack of decent basic presentation, dressing etc. When I complained to the duty manager, his only remedy was to "mention it to the kitchen staff".
Also, avoid sitting in the outdoor dining area, especially if you have young children. The umbrellas are top heavy. We had an open one and closed one fall on us twice within 20 minutes on a calm evening. Although reported to the duty manager, the same umbrellas were there the next morning.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful.

Best to ask the hotel direct? So far as we can recall the meals were good with plenty of meat on offer but we didn't stay over the weekend. During the week there can be major bookings with conferences when they put a buffet on but as guests you can still eat from the menu if you want.
