Constructed for the Bank of New Zealand in 1910, this neo-classical building reflects an era when the bank manager was the most important man in town. Over a century later, the bank left, and Left Bank was born! Lovingly restored and beautifully furnished in a tasteful heritage style, the property now has something to offer every visitor to Kaikohe. The foyer upstairs opens onto 5 rooms that were originally the private residence of the bank manager and his family. The 3 largest are now spacious Deluxe Rooms, with modern en-suites and King beds that can be split to twins. The smaller 2 Standard Double Rooms are equally comfortable, also featuring private bathrooms, flatscreen TVs, and tea & coffee facilities. For the more budget-conscious, downstairs is home to Safe-As Backpackers. The unique design creates a level of privacy not normally achieved within a hostel dorm! Various semi-enclosed areas have 1, 2 or 3 comfortable single beds, each with its own power socket and reading light.

An absolutely amazing place to stay half way on the trail, we were a little unsure what accommodation we'd find. The Left bank is a fantastic boutique hotel, the rooms have been beautifully refurbished, great water pressure to wash away the sweat and dust of the day.
The staff are really friendly, nothing ever a problem.
They have a locked bike storage with power to charge your ebike if you are lucky enough to have one. Plus a lock up yard for your car.
We met other guests who showed us the Safe As bank rooms, a great place to stay if you are a larger group looking for cheaper accommodation option with your own kitchen.
We ate at the Mint restaurant for dinner and breakfast and highly recommend to factor this in as part of your stay.
So so amazed at what Di and Jack have done for Kaikohe, we will definitely recommend to others.

This beautifully restored hotel has a lot going for it. The staff are lovely, helpful, friendly and smiling. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. Our coeliac tamariki could order from the menu at will and the food was extremely good. The bike storage was great and well set out with lots of points to charge the e-bikes. It’s really the only place to stay in kaikohe.
That’s the main downside really. Kaikohe. Central kaikohe turns out to be very noisy. With no fans or aircon we had to try and sleep on a very hot night with the windows open. We heard everything from the mid night domestic dispute to the revving cars to the barking dogs. In the early morning we discovered we could hear everything from the next door room including the guest singing melodies, at least tunefully. We’d recommend it to others but suggest earplugs. It will be even better when it’s cooler.

Hi Mal and Anna, Thank you for the kind review, however I am surprised about the room, they are equipped with very efficient Air Con units in every room - did you not see it by the light switch? Unfortunately New Year period in Kaikohe was busy and noisy like lots of other spots, the majority of the time it is a quiet sleepy hollow. Hope the rest of the trip went well.

Kaikohe may not seem to be the ideal location, but as other reviews show it's on the cycling trail so is convenient stopping point. It's also a good alternative if you are touring North - we based ourselves here to travel on to places such as the Kauri Coast, Hokianga, Kerikeri and the East Coast Beaches. The Hotel itself is excellent. Faithfully restored to the period, the deluxe room we stayed in was "enormous" compared to modern hotels, clean, well serviced and appointed. Restaurant downstairs (see separate review) was very convenient. Excellent communication throughout the whole time from booking to departure. Secure parking, and right in the middle of town (not a lot to see in Main Street).Thoroughly recommended for a stay.

We stayed one night on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail, and our electric bikes were well cared for in the shed where the battery was charged overnight. The upstairs room was basic, clean and comfortable. Food was delicious in the cafe and the staff were helpful and chatty. We felt cared for and well nourished. Oh, and we ordered the take away lunch boxes for our next day biking to Horeke; they were yum! Fully recommend staying and dining at this sweet spot. It is a bit pricey but worth it all things considered.

We stayed 3 nights in this wonderful hotel in Kaikohe for our ride on the Pou Herenga Tai - Twin Coast Cycle Trail from Opua to Horeke. Well done to Jack and Di for seeing its potential and helping to bring life back to the North. The staff were great and always willing to accommodate our wishes. The rooms have been renovated beautifully keeping the original features but with modern convieniences. We enjoyed tasty food and wine. Lunches provided for our riding days were filling, healthy and delicious.
Our bikes and cars were stored safely off road.
Being central to the track meant we could start riding each day without the need for a shuttle and it was easy to arrange shuttles from the end of the track each day back to Kiakohe.

We had one of the smaller rooms which was more than adequate. The rooms have been very nicely furnished and are a great alternative to modern accommodation that can be very bland. The staff were helpful with check-in, secure bike storage and secure car parking. We had a really nice dinner in the restaurant and were impressed to find this type of accommodation in a town that is very lacking. Really good to see a business trying to attract guests, in particular people riding the cycle trail. You've done a great job of it.

We stayed at Left Bank for three nights, one in the boutique adult dormitory accommodation and 2 in a superior room upstairs. This has to be some of the best accommodation we have stayed in, in New Zealand. Brooke's hospitality was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and we really felt like part of the family by the time we left.
We did the Twin Coast Cycle Trail and rode East to Opua on Day 1 and West to Horeke on Day 2. (Riding downhill each day!) Left Bank is the ideal location for riding the trail and an absolute highlight. The Mint Cafe/Restaurant meals were absolutely delicious, we ate both breakfast and dinner here, both meals were 5 stars!

I recently stayed in the Safe-as Backpackers accommodation, just the one night, as I would be arriving late and leaving early so all I needed was a bed. It was perfect, the shower was great, hot and good pressure, bed comfortable, and I was able to come and go at unsociable hours. It was a very nice touch that when I got my booking confirmation they booked me in automatically for dinner - saying I could confirm when I check in. Kaikohe does not have many choices for food so the restaurant is a bonus - which this time I didn't need. Di, Jack and the friendly staff are doing a great job. I will be returning this month again, same thing. See you then guys.

We fully booked the backpackers accomodation for two families while doing the twin coast cycle trail. The kids were able to have more space. They loved the upstairs bunks. Kitchen was able to accomodate cooking and dishes for nine people. And the outdoor seating area was a bonus on a lovely summer evening. The showers had great water pressure and lots of it. Mattresses were comfy and everyone slept well. Lesley and the team managed our stay fantastically and any questions were immediately answered. Thanks for the great stay.
