Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Staying with Victoria and David has been the best accommodation I've had so far hiking Te Araroa! I don't anticipate I'll encounter one as nice! Victoria and David were wonderful to chat with and so lovely! When we got there hot and sweaty after a long day of hiking, we were warmly welcomed and given a popsicle which was the absolute perfect thing at the time! We had a lovely room with the most comfortable bed I've had at a hostel. V&D even did a load of washing for us, which was amazing since the previous days were wet and muddy on trail.

For a Te Araroa hiker staying at the Hone Heke Flashpackers Lodge is an essential experience not to be missed. David and Victoria are totally focused on their guests and are willing to adapt their business to accommodate the changing needs of hikers. Not resting on their laurels having won many awards they continue to providing an outstanding service. They walk their talk. Many thanks.

David and Victoria are the best hosts you could ask for. They were so accommodating when one of our bags didn't arrive. We had to stay 2 extra days which meant we missed our start group going up to the Cape, but when our time came David was happy to drop us up north to start the trail. When we returned after 8 days trekking we got another warm welcome back. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the cooking, dining, and games area is a great place to meet fellow hikers. We wish there are more places like Home Heke Lodge as we make our way further down the trail.

The owners are the nicest, I had an amazing time at Hone Heke Lodge and even decided to stay an extra night. The warm welcome, clean kitchen and bathrooms and cozy dorm rooms made me feel so at home. They are also very helpful if you need anything.

Victoria and Dave provide outstanding hospitality. The Fruju ice block on arrival was a welcoming (and welcome) touch, facilities provide everything a TA walker needs, the dining area is a great space for connecting with other guests, and they are both friendly and helpful (including Dave recommending and dropping us off to the Plough and Feather when we fancied a pizza and pint). Our experience at Hone Heke Lodge can't be faulted- highly recommended.

Had great hospitality here from David & Victoria. Such friendly people and a lovely family run place. Situated nice and close to town. Safe off street parking. We were lucky to see the team from Vanuatu singing in their band too.

Fantastic owners and great facilities, including a pool table and a cool TV room. The guests are very friendly and welcoming, and I was offered dinner on several occasions, which I happily accepted haha. Can't recommend this special place highly enough!

Was such a treat being able to stay at the lodge for a few nights. Amazing entertainment area, facilities and rooms with more than enough storage space for travelers! Enjoyed the wide varied of movies they had on offer in the cosy TV room but nothing beats the free pool table that kept us busy for hours - big thanks to Vicky and Dave on always making sure we were enjoying our stay and offering if we needed anything 🥳
