Detailed Reviews
I found Wharepuke by chance wondering around Kerikeri looking for a place to stay during lockdown. What started as a refuge became my home for nine months!
By day you can stroll around the pathways and sculpture garden. No matter how many times I did I always spotted something new. I came to recognize the calls of the fantail and Tui birds which I spotted on the property often. I frequently surprised a pheasant in a tree and glimpsed rosellas a few times. The fruit and trees on the property gloriously change with the seasons unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
At night the stars are glorious and there are perfect Milky Way views from the lake on the property. Full moons magically light up the garden by the cottages.
The cottages are perfect for one or two people and have the essentials to make a home cooked meal any time you want. If you don’t feel like cooking grab a meal at Maha just a few meters walk from your cottage!
Tania and Mark are lovely hosts and work hard to keep you happy along with their dog Monte who, if you’re lucky, will give you a cuddle during your stay.
There’s a laundry washer and dryer available to all the cottages.
The real magic is sleeping and waking to the sounds of nature and you’re a few minutes walk from the Stone Store and about 15 minutes walk from town center.
Highly recommend and would definitely stay again and again. If only the government let me stay indefinitely in your beautiful country!
Thank you so much for your beautiful hospitality!

A friend recommended I stay here when I told her I was visiting Kerikeri. From the moment I booked, Tania, the manager, made me feel very much at home. I didn’t come by car so she offered to pick me up at the bus stop - she made sure I knew all about Wharepuke and it’s origin. It’s such a different type of Accomodation and it was a real treat staying here. It’s close enough to town and the stone store yet you feel a million miles away from everything.

We booked Wharepuke as a stop-over on our way home after a week in the Far North, as much for its proximity to the excellent Maha Restaurant as anything else. We didn’t expect such warm and personal service as we received from Tania, for whom the setting is not just her business but her home and heritage, nor the gorgeous subtropical forest established by her father or the excellent sculpture trail that winds through it. The cottage we stayed in was well appointed, clean, comfortable, attractive and private. We wished we had planned to stay longer and it will be our go-to accommodation in Kerikeri from now on. Excellent value for money.

What a gem this place is! the cottages are nestled within the gardens and provide a very peaceful and tranquil stay.
I strongly suggest to do the art walk around the gardens, it is like stepping into a fairy world. And don't miss the restaurant: it was one of the best meals I had during my 2 week stay in New Zealand.

From the time we arrived generously hosted by Tania. This fabulous place developed by her clever father, we relaxed and felt peaceful. Great location, exceeded expectations regarding cottages and that we were nestled in the bush. Beds very comfortable and clean, could not recommend higher.

We totally loved this. The amazing setting - planting started in 1993 - is truly like being in the Amazon with Heliconias, Orchids and all manner of interesting trees and plants and all looking as if they have been there forever. Each placement and association has been planned, providing a synergy with other plants. Much planning and thought is evident in general. An escorted tour can be booked also. The outdoor sculpture walk is lovely also with artworks discussed via an explanatory catalogue, weatherproofed and convenient to carry. The gallery offers shows of interesting artists and there is an operational print studio, which offers classes as well. Although we didn't try the acclaimed restaurant - Māha - we visited it as there are more artworks on display as well. It offers a real haven of peace from the bustling town, which is like a mini-Auckland.

We are actually still here as I write this review as we can't leave! Its too glorious! I am on the deck surrounded by Kingfisher (very much an interloper on his patch!), Tuis, Fantails, spuggies (sparrows), gold finch, bird of paradise plants (keeping up the avian theme) and a chicken (yes, a chicken), looking out on to magnificent sub tropical gardens about to purloin herbs for supper from the owners herb garden at her insistence.
There are 6 cabins in this little piece of paradise but you simply wouldn't know it, so clever is the layout, you are encouraged to wander round the gardens and to visit the gallery housed within and also on the grounds in a perfect symbiosis is the cafe/restaurant "Food at Wharepuke".
A little background to our stay - we set out from Auckland on the Cape Reinga mission, we wanted to travel budget but not backpack budget, ie to have our own rooms with en suite, not because we're anti-social just at an age where we still want a bit of adventure but a bit of comfort too! At the time of writing we have been to and returned from our mission and in both directions have been seduced by Kerikeri, it's location, atmosphere, friendliness of its people, in to staying 2 nights in either direction which was never the plan. This is a testament to both accommodations we have stayed in and our hosts as well as anything else. If you do it our way you'll spend quality time both here at Wharepuke and on Aroha Island 12km north of Kerikeri.
This place is stunning, its at the top end of budget but after the Cape Reinga drive you'll really think you deserve this little bit of (Green) luxury. Before committing you're invited to come and view the accommodation, but once you've seen it you'll have no option but to book. I would urge anyone to stay in this subtropical piece of paradise...unless you have a morbid fear of chickens (singular actually not plural) but I'll leave you to discover why for yourself...just don't leave the muesli on the deck!!

The accommodation is situated in a beautiful subtropical oasis with all cottages being surrounded by an abundance of plants to enhance privacy. SUGGEST you bring a TORCH, as there are no external night lights...
Access to the sculpture garden is free to guests & is highly recommended. The attached restaurant serves excellent food of an evening & means there is not far to stroll afterwards ;-)
Also a short walk to the stone store via road or via bush walk path is recommended
In terms of our cottage, although it was clean in terms of carpets, bathroom & bedding, clearly the unit had not been dusted for quite some time. There were numerous cobwebs & layers of dust that permeated the unit & blinds which spoiled the cleanliness. Furthermore, several light bulbs did not work which was a problem in the bathroom!
Generally, the place felt a bit tired as a result of minimal cleanliness & this was a downside to the overall enjoyment of its location. However, having said that the location & setting makes up for this & with a bit more effort in dusting/cleaning & checking maintenance this would enhance ones experience tremendously

Response from tazNz, Manager at Wharepuke Subtropical Accommodation
Responded 30 Dec 2016
Glad you generally enjoyed your stay. Your comments regarding "...no external night lights" is a bit misleading. While it is true that we don't have street lamps cottages 2-6 all have LED string lights on a timer (until 12pm) leading you through the garden to the restaurant. This is much more in keeping with our ethos here at Wharepuke. I also encourage people to turn on their outside light if they know they are coming back late. Cottage 1's deck light reaches to the main carpark. If people get caught out all keys have little LED torches on them. Yes we have had an issue with a temperamental intermittent bathroom light fitting but if you tell us about things like a blown bulb it is a very easy fix and you are helping out the next guest should we miss it while cleaning during the day. Spring cleaning has been done!

On our trip round NZ, this was probably our best Motel. We spent 3 really enjoyable nights in cottage 3. The gardens gave you a sense of space and tranquility with a fair amount of privacy from your neighbors. The service we received was second to none, with the hosts going out of their way to make you welcome. The area around Kerikeri is beautiful, with an abundance of history and ensures plenty to fill your time. We loved it.
