Seeing Robs cheerful countenance at the beautifully arranged breakfast 🍳 table and hearing about Northlands -Tai tokerau notable historic places and trails to visit. Savouring every morsel of Lionel’s cordon Bleu home 🏡 cooking 🥘, knowing his Maori heritage brings a uniquely kiwi experience to our stay, unlike anywhere else in the world 🌎. This was our second stay at Moon Gate Villa and we'll definitely be back again. The room is spacious and comfy with a beautiful view of the garden. It's on the main street, but set back off so you don't hear any noise except the birds in the garden. And the breakfast is so tasty...almost like a full buffet so you can choose your main course, then graze from the sideboard filled with fruit, cereal, bread, etc. Stay at Moon Gate Villa. You won't be sorry!

Moon Gate is so relaxing, its another world. Lionel and Rob are amazing hosts and immediately you feel welcomed and at ease. Their love and passion for Moon Gate translates into wanting each guest to feel special,and you do. Breakfasts are appetising, great choice, beautifully cooked and presented. This is a wonderful small lodge with great hosts. Our room, the Writers Room, was equipped with everything you could possibly think of. It also had a private patio. The villa is beautifully decorated and stunning. Breakfasts were great and could be eaten in the small dining room with other guests or in the privacy of your room. We liked it very much and would certainly recommend it.

We stayed in 13 different accommodations during our month long holiday to NZ, and without doubt Moon Gate villa was the very best of them all. If you are coming to the Bay of Islands, we think this should be your lodging of choice, as confirmed by other reviewers too. Lionel and Rob provide a 5 star plus service and at a very competitive price when we compared against other places we stayed at. We stayed in the Cupids Curl room which is very spacious and decorated to a luxurious standard (as is the entire property) Everything you may need during your stay has been considered and is provided. There are too many to detail here but we particularly loved the cookie jar! along with the biodegradable sachets of shampoo etc, and the swim & beach towels, and as for the turndown service and chocolates ! On the subject of food, 5 star breakfasts are overseen by Lionel and cooked to order at a time to suit you. My favourite Eggs Florentine was one of the options and was served to perfection each morning. Lionel quickly gets to know your drink preferences and makes sure they are waiting for you on the table. Lionel and Rob are very interested to help with your itinerary to get the most out of your time and offered very good suggestions and advice to us which we appreciated. We thought the location of Moon Gate Villa was ideal, it is very quiet , easily reached from the airport, and set within some luxuriously planted gardens - there is a small pool too although we didn't use it during our stay. We felt that its location was central to lots of places of interest in the area - popular Paihia is just a short drive away. If you are looking for accommodation in Kerikeri or the Bay of Islands, Moon Gate Villa in Kerikeri is the perfect choice. Reception/Service: The two owners of the chic B&B offer the very best. To date, we have not experienced a more attentive and friendly service in any famous five-star hotel. Lionel and Rob know a lot about the area and can give one or two tips for excursions and restaurants. So we found a very good restaurant for my birthday that spoiled us. Rob also arranged a taxi for us so we could leave the rental car at home. The room: We spent six nights in the spacious Writer's Retreat and missed nothing. The bathroom is equally spacious. The cleanliness is spotless throughout the house. The room and wet room were serviced twice a day. The Writer's Retreat is the former bedroom of a well-known New Zealand writer who built the house in the early 1990s. The outdoor area of the room is a great place to linger, daydreaming on the two deckchairs or enjoying a glass of wine at the small table or even a fine dinner, prepared and served by sturgeon chefs on request (this treat is expensive, but a good option for a very special occasion). As icing on the cake, we were welcomed each night on the bedside table with two chocolates and a small, tasteful floral decoration. Lionel's offered homemade cookies enriched every coffee in between. The breakfast: The breakfast prepared by Lionel is delicious and we both never left the morning meal the slightest bit hungry: Lionel offers different variations of a cooked breakfast, "big breakfast", "Florentine", etc., fine homemade jam, croissants, sweets, fruit, cereals and toast, cold cut and cheese … The special extra: Moon Gate Villa offers a swimming pool that can be reached directly from both rooms. The garden is huge, one should actually speak of a park: It is lovingly tended, from the flowers to the romantic ponds, one of which is spanned by the Moon Gate.…

This was the best place we stayed during our 3 week holiday New Zealand. We only wish we could have stayed longer. A real highlight that added to our overall enjoyment of our trip. I will definitely book again if we are ever back in Kerikeri.

Let’s start with Fabulous! When we drove in the lovely lane to Moon Gate Villa we were welcomed with our name on a board and their two sweet dogs to greet us ! We sat down in the common room facing the gardens and one could feel the relaxation immediately ..not to mention the stunning pond with gold fish as you walk in with the running water! Our room was top notch with lots of special touches..from robes,beach towels ,to home made cookies,chocolates on our bed at night with fresh towels all the time ! We had our own privet patio looking our on the beautiful gardens We cannot say enough about Lionel and Rob! Breakfast was delicious 😃they provided us with directions to outstanding beaches and our way back to Auckland when alot of roads were closed. They booked restaurants for us which did not disappoint !! Our only disappointment is that we did t stay longer! We will be back!!…

Hidden gem, beautiful surroundings. Rob and Lionel are very welcoming hosts. They gave helpful information on restaurants and places to see. Loved Lionel's breakfasts, cookies in the jar and chocolates at night. Would definitely recommend Moon Gate for a relaxing holiday. Someday we hope to return again for a longer stay.
