Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We very quickly fell in love with the Pawhaoa Bay Lodge. The setting is absolutely gorgeous. Our hosts Bill and Claire Hurst were charming. We stayed for dinner both nights we were at the Lodge, as we didn't want to make the drive at night to the closest restaurant. Great choice as Claire is an excellent chef and provided us with a gourmet meal both nights. We kayaked the bay at sunrise and returned for a superb home cooked to order breakfast. The location is a little remote, but that makes for some of the charm of the place. Short drive to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and boat tours of the Bay of Islands. Rooms are large, clean, comfortable and well appointed. One of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand.

We have just spent the most wonderful six days at Pawhaoa Bay Lodge. The location is idyllic and the tranquility is all encompassing. Our hosts Claire and Bill couldn't possibly have looked after us any better and Claire is a superb chef. They were so helpful with ideas for places to visit too. We will really miss watching the fantastic sunsets and the complete relaxation. The night skies are also something to behold. We arrived as guests and left as friends.

This is a beautiful place to just relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. The lodge is stunning and the price includes an amazing breakfast. The beach is mainly pebbles, but one can walk up into the hills or kayak out in the bay or just relax at the lovely lodge. Bill and Claire Hurst are the ultimate hosts, making sure that your every need is catered for. They have plenty of local knowledge that they are more than willing to share. Highly recommended

We stayed there recently over New Year. What a wonderful experience. Bill and Claire are absolutely outstanding hosts catering for your every need and Claire's meals are to die for and could grace any top class restaurant in the world. The whole lodge is beautifully maintained and the settings are stupendous from the rolling hills behind to the sunsets over the Bay. Lots to do if you are that way inclined or you can sit back, chill and just enjoy

The setting of the lodge is magical and its beautifully presented ; but what really makes it is the delightful couple of Clair and Bill the hosts who are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Should you opt for the food its is exquisite ! Richard and Vivienne

Unique location, directly on the waterfront. Superb large rooms and very clean. Because the lodge is so small (8 rooms I think) and the owners are present at all time, you really feel like visiting friends rather than staying in a hotel. If you are looking after a remote place (it is nearly at the end of the road) to relax and forget about anything else, this is the place to go. Only thing I wished we did, is asking for the price for the dinner. Don't get me wrong, it is a superb, home-cooked 4 course dinner, but 80 NZD per person without the drinks is a lot, even compared with top Auckland restaurants Anyway, I do recommend this place.I would love to return one day.

This outstanding B&B will redefine your expectations of what an upmarket B&B should provide. Located right on the water, this purpose built lodge has expansive lounge and living rooms that provide a luxurious ambience that is perfect for reading or relaxing in front of the giant open fireplace built of locally quarried stone. The bedrooms are well appointed and our room opened onto a timber deck with sweeping bay views. We enjoyed a dip in the water before dinner which was arranged by our charming hosts Claire and Bill. Dinner was an extra charge but well worth it because our hosts would source local produce and prepare it whilst we enjoyed local wines and talked with them about anything and everything. We will be back!

Set in the most tranquil bay, Pawhaoa Lodge is a joy to visit. The scenery all around it is beautiful and there are many excellent hikes to take. Bill and Claire are excellent hosts and good cooks. Their rooms and cottages are spacious and very well equipped.

Claire and Bill are amazing hosts and Pawhaoa Bay Lodge is a Jewel in New Zealand crown. From beautifully catered meals in the Lodge if you don't wish to cook to collecting clams on the beech and catching snapper in the bay for the BBQ at your Villa, Claire and Bill ensure your stay is perfect for you. On arrival I was blown away by our accommodation, the villa's are amazing. Beautiful views over the bay and all the facilities to make staying here easy and very comfortable, even a coffee grinder! Don't worry about the fact that the villa's only have DVD players, we were worried we would miss TV too, but honestly, life here fills your day and more. Do as much or as little as you like - we did not want to leave. Note: If you are thinking of self catering, bring food with you. There are shops but not next door and my Husband says you do not want to waste good fishing time on the road! See you soon, next time with the Kids!
