Travellers' Choice
Martinborough is a quirky little village with a majestic square at its heart. The Martinborough Hotel takes pride of place at the entrance to the square. Once a way station for prosperous travellers to and from the South Wairarapa's huge isolated sheep stations, its grand facade has been a focal point for the town from the early days. Martinborough has made a name for itself as a centre of excellence for cuisine and wine. Visitors and locals alike find the romance of Martinborough endearing as well as invigorating. The hotels past, and it's sense of history and place will charm you as soon as you arrive in the lobby - from the battered suitcases of a gentleman traveller in reception, to the sloping floors and historical sketches of Wairarapa personalities adorning the walls. Today The Martinborough Hotel offers character, comfort and old style personal attention. As for the little town with the big name which attracts thousands to its fairs, wine and food festival and vibrant restaurant and café scene, Martinborough remains as quirky as ever.

Partner and I booked a quiet room, with a bath, away from the main hotel. The website images (including the bath) looked great, as did the description. Out the back, away from the busy main street. Perfect... But no... We were rung and told that despite the website pictures and description, the room didn't, in fact, have a bath. So the Hotel had "upgraded" us to a Classic room (Weld Room) in the hotel itself, which did have a bath. It was a Friday night. Right across the busy main road from a pub/outdoor drinks facility. The noise was horrific. Tossed and turned until the wee small hours. Also the loo was about 1-2m from the bed! Directly on the other side of a louvered door. No privacy at all. Oh dear. This was a terrible experience, Very poor indeed. We were pleased to get home to catch up on some sleep. We let the hotel know of the issue and they said they would pass the feedback and issue onto the owner. We heard nothing back so can only assume that what we experienced is what is to be expected. The restaurant was the only redeeming part of the evening. Lovely food and lots of it.

We were there for Sunday night meal and booked as missed out on the Saturday night due to not having a booking. I had the Pork Belly which was delicious and perfectly paired with the apple and arancini. Thoroughly recommend. Friendly service, prompt meals. Beautiful building and restaurant.

We stayed for 2 nights in a garden suite, it was absolutely beautiful. The Room was lovely, very comfortable bed and a lovely bathroom with Ashley and Co toiletries, very nice. The on-site Restaurant for dinner and for Brunch was outstanding. The Food was excellent, the service nice and friendly, great atmosphere. Reception was disappointing, polite but not welcoming. On the day we checked out we asked to see the summery/receipts and were told that we did sign for it, (we didn’t question the amount just wanted to see the different items). The receptionist said she could email it to us, but we never received anything. Lovely little town would certainly go back.

This place doesn't disappoint - firstly, the location is fantastic. It's right on Martinborough Square so in walking distance of everything you can do in Martinborough. It's a really historic hotel - it dates back to 1882 and it is kept in amazing condition. They've kept its vintage look and feel, but it's well-looked after. The rooms are done with beautiful, quirky colours and furnishings. There is a restaurant within the hotel called Union Square Bistro, and it's delicious! We had an amazing sticky toffee pudding there for dessert, and brunch! There's also a lovely little library reading nook with a fire that goes all day. My one small thing is that the bed was smallish but that was just our room, so I can't speak for the whole hotel.

We stayed a single night recently in the gorgeous "Barton" garden suite. These suites are located to the rear of the hotel in a very peaceful and pretty garden. It was an excellent choice due to the fact that there is direct access from the car park along a pathway to the suites allowing for easy luggage moving (no stairs). The suite was beautifully decorated, super comfortable with a luxurious bed, armchairs and an occasional table. It was a really nice space to relax in and enjoy the sun and garden views. The toiletries were lovely quality and are of the environmentally friendly variety not the single use plastic nightmares. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome and valued - we were early for check in but the manager assured us our room was nearly ready, and then went to check personally, finding that only the vacuuming needed to be done to finish the room ready for us - she then went and spoke to the cleaner who was vacuuming another room to ask her to leave that and do ours so that we may have the room at the soonest opportunity. I was very impressed by both that, and the way she thanked the staff member who was cleaning, for doing this. I also thanked the cleaner when I bumped into her later and got a beaming smile and a "no problem!" Sure signs that a business is doing things right. There is a charming little library nook off from reception with a nice cosy fire and armchairs that just beg to be sat and relaxed in too. Everything was beautifully styled and in great condition. I would return in a heartbeat and book the exact same room! Also had a great meal in the Union Square Bistro (part of the hotel) - see separate review.
