Martinborough is a quirky little village with a majestic square at its heart. The Martinborough Hotel takes pride of place at the entrance to the square. Once a way station for prosperous travellers to and from the South Wairarapa's huge isolated sheep stations, its grand facade has been a focal point for the town from the early days. Martinborough has made a name for itself as a centre of excellence for cuisine and wine. Visitors and locals alike find the romance of Martinborough endearing as well as invigorating. The hotels past, and it's sense of history and place will charm you as soon as you arrive in the lobby - from the battered suitcases of a gentleman traveller in reception, to the sloping floors and historical sketches of Wairarapa personalities adorning the walls. Today The Martinborough Hotel offers character, comfort and old style personal attention.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We called in today, Tuesday 9 April 2024, for a bar lunch. We ordered the beer battered fish & chips, plus the Smash burger & chips. Both were well presented, good portions and delicious to the last mouthful. Washed it all down with Monteiths Cider, which went well with our meals. The staff were friendly and attentive and we loved the atmosphere of bar. Thank you, we will be back.

Great old characterful hotel. We had a garden suite which was very spacious and comfortable. We only ate breakfast there which was nice. On one occasion my husband had shakshuka which was very undercooked. The chef was very apologetic and brought another one which was lovely. The hotel is on the town square so it's not going to be silent but next door there is a brewery/bar which had live music. Unfortunately it wasn't great and it was very loud, fortunately it didn't go on until late!

What a fabulous base for visiting the wonderful Wairarapa region. We are so glad we chose to stay here. Absolutely loved the way this historic hotel has been perfectly renovated setting the scene for our week away wining, dining and exploring. We had the Riddiford Room on the corner upstairs and it was wonderful.

Only stayed the one night on our visit to NZ from the UK with our friends from Masterton. They picked a real gem with great rooms in the hotel block but with all the mid cons. We also had an evening meal in the hotel restaurant which was 5 star. Great character and a must if you are in the area

From the initial booking to check out our experience at the Martinborough Hotel was fantastic. Our room was very spacious, clean, and quiet. We used the glassware and plates when we brought wine back to our room. We also sat outside in the courtyard which was nice.

Lovely old building with outdoor seating on the square. Service almost non-existent: found own table, got own menus, water and cutlery, had to order at bar. That would have been fine if pub prices but these were not: $60 each for one main and a drink. The meals were on the small side: delicious steak, a pork belly with a tiny serving of gravy and fish which was old and inedible. No one bothered to ask how the meals were … in a town with great options this is not one of them.

Absolutely fabulous hotel to stay at will definitely be returning. Rooms are very clean and tidy and very large. Loved the outdoor patio to sit and overlook the square with a glass of wine. Loved the bar and bistro food and service was great. 🥰

This is a remodeled 1882 hotel on the square. There is a lot NOT to like here. I wished I had read the 1-2 star reviews first before booking and encourage others to do so. First, there is no elevator and it is two long flights of stairs up to the room (we had Martin) which with heavy luggage was a pain. Second, and probably the biggest issue, there is way, way too much noise here to sleep comfortably. During the day if you want to take a nap, there is constant street noise (the motorcycles were the worse with loud lack of mufflers). At night we had two bars blasting music until 1045pm right next to us. This occurred even after one of the bars closed for nearly two hours later and no one outside being served. I think the windows are not double paned and therefore cannot hold out any amount of sound. Lastly, the tub with a curtain around it is a very hard to get in and out of with someone like myself with bad hops and honestly very dangerous. Plus it is very cramped. I cannot recommend here to book and stay.

Good morning. Thank you firstly for staying with us. The best option if you are unable to carry your luggage upstairs is to reserve a Garden Suite. We do advise our guests when booking that we have no lift. Our hotel is in the heart of our beautiful village and in peak summer town can get busy so again, a Garden suite booking may have worked better for you. We are always happy to advise before arrival of the best room type for you.

Fabulous hotel. Probably the best I’ve ever stayed in. The room was exceptional overlooking the square. If you stay here you won’t want to leave the hotel, just enjoy it 😊 The town is very quiet until most of the cafes and restaurants open at 4pm but there are some shops and vineyards to visit also.
