Shrine Mont is a nonprofit conference and retreat center with accommodations for up to 550 people. At our heart is the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, the Cathedral of the diocese with public services held at 11:00 on Sundays from early April through mid November. We are located on 1,200 acres of forest in the historic resort town of Orkney Springs, VA fifteen miles west of I81 and two hours west of Washington, DC. Part of our facility is a former resort hotel and accommodations vary from recently renovated hotel style rooms to cottages for families or small groups. Recreation activities include swimming, tennis, hiking, sports activities, volleyball, shuffleboard, Bocce, hayrides and camp fires. Shrine Mont is the preferred lodging partner for nearby Bryce Resort Golf with special discounts for golf and a zip line.

Detailed Reviews
Beautiful surrounding, exceptional food (especially Sunday fried chicken :) ), warm and hospitable staff. Fun for kids with swimming, hiking, playgrounds, and exploring. Always a joy to get a way to this "place apart" in the mountains for rest, relaxation, and fellowship.

I have been going to Shrine Mont since I was a child, and there is no place like it. The town of Orkney Springs is very quaint and the old hotel is beautiful. It is a great place for a get-away and offers great hiking and good country food!

My family went to Shrine Mont every year with our church. At first, my son who was 7 on his first visit, thought upon arrival that the place was horrible because there were no TV's and no luxuries of home. Bare bones furnishing . It surely was a shock to him, but after that first weekend he wanted to return every year. It's so odd that we lose touch with nature, good friends, and conversation in our busy every day lives. We all love Shrine Mont. Now that he just entered college, I am thinking of taking him back to relive the close times we had as a family in the beautiful and serene setting of this wonderful "resort" at the end of a road in a small town with no where to go. But, ohhhhh , there is plenty to do - climb the top of the mountain, wander in the woods, eat loads of good ole' home cooking fully prepared for you in a group setting, fishing or reading by the lake, and so much more. If you want to build relationships with a group of friends, your family, co-workers, or whomever, you will not be disappointed with Shrine Mont. The civil war hotel is amazing with porches everywhere, and there are small and large "cottages" to rent on the property too. I love this place and some of the greatest memories of my life were created here. This isn't the Ritz, there is no glitz, but there is so much to learn about yourself here.

It was awful , rooms, no AC No click or radio and the rocking chairs on porches were very uncomfortable. It took forever to find our room. No one would explain.
Food was very good we had supper 1 night. Everyone there eats at the same time all meals.

Don't waste your time or money going here. You're gonna hate it. Unless you're a religious nerd, you won't have any fun here. The food stinks, the activities are overrated and don't really build character. The dorms look like they haven't been renovated in over a decade. Not to mention, it's in the middle of nowhere in a backwards part of Virginia. You couldn't pay me to deal with those stiff, uncomprising reliougious fanatics and go spend time at this lousy excuse for a resort.

Shrine Mont is a wonderful place apart from the hectic world we live in, its like stepping back in time to a simpler place. Well the rooms are just old beds and there is no AC, Shrine Mont is about putting your self in touch with God and nature, and is a beautiful rest. I my self have been going to Shrine Mont with my church for about 10 years now! There are many things to do there like take a hike, fish, ride around the country, if you go you will have fun, and most likely good fellowship with other guests who are there too. Oh, and I almost forgot the food! When you stay at Shrine Mont food is included in your stay, and do they ever have good home cooking, this is not the place to be on a diet, but one bite of there famous Meat loaf, or Mrs. Mooma's apple butter and you will be hooked for life.

We were attending a concert in Orkney Springs that was part of the annual Shenandoah Music Festival so decided to spend the night there instead of driving home at a late hour. The Shrine Mont lodging is very basic (2 twin beds, no TV/radio/air conditioning) but as long as it's not TOO hot you can get by comfortably. Each room comes with a large box fan that most people positioned in the window to pull in the cool(er) night air (the elevation there is about 1500 feet which offers some relief during hot conditions but not as much as the nearby Shenandoah National Park). We had to go to the lodging office and scrounge an extension cord to allow us to place the fan in the window. This was late at night but fortunately a maintenance person was located by chance so recommend you bring your own cord to be safe. The food which was served buffet style was fine and no complaints there, but not gourmet by any means. Lodging rate includes all 3 meals which is fortunate since there are few if any meal options in the vicinity (perhaps something down near the Bryce Resort). The historic old buildings are interesting and one day I'd like to check out the cottages. This would be a nice place for a family reunion, one of which was going on at the time.

Had not been back here for several years but we were invited to a Spring wedding. The rooms in Maryland House have been updated and as long as you enjoy a basic room (i.e., clean, private bathroom, no TV, no phone, no AC, limited closet storage) this is a great place to stay. And it is hard to beat the variety of on-site locations for an evening BBQ & dance, afternoon lawn party, large ballroom, and wedding at an outdoor shrine.

The best way to disconnect from the world. No TV or phones. No A/C. Internet hot spots are available.
The food is out of this world and you won't be disappointed. Meals are served family style "up the hill" and buffet at the "hotel".
Bring a fan for warm evenings. Ask about the hay ride. Hikes for all ages and abilities. Fishing and a pool help fill the day. Just down the road at Bryce, you can Zip Line or grass tube.
