Flew via private plane from Barbados which took 20 minutes. Met by hotel staff and our personal butler. Our villa was very spacious with own pool and golf cart to get around the estate. All the staff were extremely friendly especially Felix and the hotel beach staff. We ate at all the restaurants and food was excellent. Alcohol very expensive but was expected on this private island. Hardly anyone here and we were the only people playing golf. The pro Adam was always on hand and our buggy was set up to go every morning with iced water etc... Everywhere we went we were greeted by our names - goodness knows how they remembered us. Cannot wait to go again.

Spent the day at Shell’s beach bar - Felix is a wonderful gentleman and a credit to the resort. He made me feel very welcome and even helped me to make a reservation at one of the other resorts on the island. He and his staff were extremely attentive, food was delicious.

We recently stayed in a villa at the Canouan Resort over winter/Christmas break from Dec. 23, 2015 - Jan. 2, 2016. The villa we rented was called Big Blue Ocean (Estate Villa 27) and had a fabulous location right above Shell Beach. This was the only villa with a walking path directly to the beach (all other villa renters had to drive golf carts to Shell Beach). The villa itself was very well laid out with 2 masters (kings), 2 double rooms (double beds) and one room with twins which we converted to a king (albeit having the length of a twin!). I cannot say enough about the 2 butlers that were assigned to our villa. They were truly amazing, helpful, resourceful, thoughtful and always staying one step ahead of our requests and questions. The holiday would not have been nearly as enjoyable without Asha and Cornelius. We did however find it interesting that we were not told about the staff at the villa prior to our arrival. Needless to say, we were most pleasantly surprised to find that they were part of the villa rental!
The villas come with electric golf carts. The number of golf carts alotted depends on the number of people in your party. We had 10 people and were given 4 golf carts. For additional info, our party consisted of: 2 "old" adults with young adults aged 25, 22, 20, 19, 19, 19, 17 and 12.

Although I am still not fully up to speed on the "new resort" versus the Canouan resort, I will attempt to describe the layout and our experience while there. I tried to find additional information prior to our arrival about the new hotel called The Pink Sands Club. Neither me, nor our travel agent was afforded much info, other than to say that all areas of the resort would be open and available during our stay. On a map of the resort one can see the various locations: 1) the estate villas (where we stayed); 2) the "urban center" which includes check-in, the church, Bellini's and La Piazza restaurants, golf center, an older workout center, a boutique and a salon; 3) the kids club; 4) the tennis courts; and finally 5) the "New Hotel" as its called by the staff, also called the The Pink Sands Club. There is a lot of ground to cover between these locations! It's a good 6-7 minute golf cart ride from Big Blue Ocean villa to the urban center and a good 12 minute golf cart ride from that villa to the "new hotel". So be aware when you stay in the estate villas that you are a golf cart ride away from the other areas. And the route is circuitous....along the hilly, winding road then down a hill, cutting across the golf course to the urban center. It is further along the road, up and down hills, to the new hotel.

We spent most of our days on Shell Beach, as it was close and easy. The beach staff is fabulous about getting you set up with chairs, towels and water. In addition, there is a bar and dining on the beach. Servers will come around and take orders, get beverages and bring food. There are dining palapas along the beach and additional tables and chairs set up under the shade of trees. The beach itself is nice, but not super white in color. The ocean floor off the beach is not great for bare feet, as it is pretty rocky. There is a water sports center at the beach as well, offering a host of activities. The weather over winter break was windy and the surf choppy, so not conducive for us to use the boats or kayaks.

We did enjoy the Godhall beach in front of the new hotel as well. This beach is larger and whiter than Shell Beach and has more chair and umbrella setups. It also has a water sports and activities area. The waves at this beach are more conducive to body surfing and wave playing, but there are some sea urchins on the ocean floor. I would recommend bringing water shoes for kids (or adults) who enjoy splashing around and playing in the ocean.

As for swimming pools, we generally used the one at our villa, which was great and included a diving board. There is a resort pool at the new hotel if one desires to go. The pool deck at this new pool is quite small with very limited seating. The swim-up pool bar is fun. There is a lower terrace below the pool which includes some additional chairs and a hot tub. The pool bar features a dining patio where they serve lunch.

Because we did not stay at the new Pink Sands Hotel part of the resort, I cannot give any insight into the rooms. Guests did say that they were spacious and elegant. Based on the decor and finishes in the hotel's common spaces, I would be inclined to believe that the rooms are nice.
In addition to the Pool Bar, the Pink Sands has 3 restaurants and a bar: Romeo (dinner), Juliet (dinner), the Lagoon Cafe (breakfast) and Turtles Bar (evening). The decor/design in all 4 is fabulous. Kudos to the decorating team!

If I had to give low marks in a category, it would be the food service area of the resort. Overall the food was above average/good. The service was very spotty and there were certainly some food service staff members who were not properly trained or prepared, having very little knowledge of the menus, food preparation methods or offerings at the bars and restaurants. Some of our meals bordered on painful, with the one really black mark being the New Years Eve dinner which took over 3 hours for below average food, a very limited fixed menu and no options for kids or picky eaters. While we were there, only certain restaurants were open for dinner - one at the Pink Sands and one at the urban center per night. Breakfast was at either Bellini's or The Lagoon Cafe each day, with the two breakfast menus being almost identical.
Private chefs are available in the villas and we did use one for dinner, which turned out to be great!
I would also recommend the BBQ Beach Buffet for dinner on Shell Beach, offered 1-2 times per week. There is a great assortment of food, all delicious and the resort does a fabulous job of decorating the beach area for the event.

We took several excursions while there. We took a catamaran to Tobago Keys and then a speed boat to tobago keys and Union Island. As the seas were a bit rough, we opted to take a plane to visit Mustique one day. Would highly recommend all of these.

As far as nightlife, there really wasn't any. Because we were a good sized group, we tended to be our own entertainment. Turtles Bar had live music most nights and was a good place to hang out, but there were seldom many people there. As one of our older kids expressed, "the resort seems to be filled mostly with older people or families with younger kids." And this indeed was our experience. While my older teens and 20 somethings enjoyed their time, it was not quite the nightlife they were hoping for. I imagine things may change in this department once the new hotel has been open longer. I also understand that there are some spots in town that can be frequented for nightlife but our group felt it was a bit of a hassle. The resort did not put together a New Year's party as such. As mentioned above, there was a set dinner option. Fireworks went off at midnight and were great. But there was not much more than Turtles bar and music offered. If you have been to other Caribbean resorts (i.e. Jumby Bay, Cotton House) which put on themed events and lavish parties, you would have been most disappointed with the New years festivities here.

We did get to visit the new restaurant and beach area that the resort is in the process of finishing along the west side of the island. It looks like an amazing addition to the facilities and is scheduled to be open around Easter we were told. Again, it is a bit of a golf cart ride to get there. The resort may be having shuttle service or some other options for guests once its open??

Several members of our group played golf one day. They said it was a really fun course and was challenging. The course seemed to be very lightly used, as we rarely saw many groups on the course at the same time. We did drive golf carts up to the top of the pinnacle of the golf course and experienced some phenomenal views of Canouan and neighboring islands of the Grenadines. We also took one of the guided resort hikes which also afforded amazing views. Highly recommended.
Several members of our group also enjoyed massages at the spa and said they were great as was the setting and view from the treatment rooms.

We have stayed at some really fabulous Caribbean resorts over the years. Canouan is a very nice island with helpful, friendly people. We would most definitely revisit the resort, but may wait a bit until some of the "issues" are worked out. We may also try staying at the Pink Sands "new hotel" next time for a change. All in, it was a very pricey vacation, renting a 5 bedroom villa over festive season. While we loved everything about the villa, villa staff, villa pool and location near shell beach, beyond that we felt that the Canouan resort did not fully live up to the extremely high price tag we paid for it over the festive season. We will keep our fingers crossed that the Canouan management can work out all of the kinks, spruce up the resort landscaping, fully train the new resort staff and improve the food/food service areas to bring the resort up to the level that its prices warrant.

I recently had the pleasure of returning to the Canouan Island Resort for my third visit. I had previously enjoyed this property so much and was curious to return for a third time to see what was happening. Before I get into details, I will say, that I will return again. I thoroughly enjoyed my recent stay.

Being that I am a travel agent specializing in luxury travel I am always seeking new and unusual locations and Canouan is exactly that. The first time I visited Canouan was in January 2002 when the resort was managed by Rosewood and then again in January of 2006 when the property was managed by Raffles. The hotel is now self managed and many of the same staff and services remains in place. The hotel has downsized from its original size however I wouldn’t let that deter you.

The property is currently going through a transition however I would still consider recommending this property even during this transition. The property is huge (it covers ½ of the island of Canouan) and consists of a small hotel and 30 luxury 3-7 bedroom (privately owned) villas located on the hillside (with spectacular views). Many of these villas are available for rent and have available the use of the hotel facilities.

The new boutique hotel is currently under construction and will be located on Godal Beach. The new hotel is partially owned by Sandy Lane (Barbados) and will consist of small number suites and villas within the hotel site. This construction does not affect your stay at the current resort. The new resort is anticipated to open December 2012. I was not aware that any construction was going on except when we took a catamaran out and were able to see what was going on from the water.

Overall, however, the hotel offers an experience which is hard to find elsewhere.
This is a great spot for someone seeking a very low key experience. We were at the resort during spring break week in March and we were three of only 40 or so guests staying at the resort. The resort has a staff of 300+ which remains in tact due to a contractual agreement with the government. It is very quiet resort so I would not recommend this property to someone seeking “action or excitement”. The hotel operates four separate restaurants. Two are always open for lunch and then one rotating restaurant is open for dinner each night which I found to be perfectly acceptable as they change the menus (Italian, Continental, French, and Asian). The quality of the food is very good and on par with any other Caribbean or Mexican luxury resort. They have nightly live entertainment which I found enjoyable and a small casino. For those of you who have been to Canouan, you would be pleasantly surprised to learn that the prices have come down on the food & beverage (which were previously excessive). The hotel now operates its own hydroponic farm which provides excellent fresh vegetables, lettuces, etc.

All of the rooms are very large and nicely appointed with all the necessary amenities including flat screen TV’s, complimentary internet, huge bathrooms, etc. The décor is very nice and simple with cream colored slip covered sofas, dining areas and all have large balconies. Some rooms have private plunge pools. The hotel is a great choice for families since the rooms are very large and the resort itself is very family oriented. While I say that this is a great family resort, I don’t want to scare away couples because this is an excellent romantic destination too. The property is so large that a couple can enjoy private beach areas, etc. The individual rooms scattered within the very spread out resort and a golf cart is provided for each room. Feel free to email me for suggestions on room locations/categories, etc.

The beaches are some of the best beaches I have been to in the Caribbean. They are large and quiet and the water is perfect for a family with small kids. Because the hotel has so few guests, it is a very serene peaceful experience. I will also mention the main beach is raked & cleaned everyday. I have never been to a better maintained beach!

The kids club at this hotel was one of the best I have experienced to date (I have a 3 year old). The staff at the kids club were fantastic and have been there for years. They interact with the kids and do a lot of outdoor activities including swimming, boating, etc. They have a nice outdoor playground and are very flexible with any specific requests. Officially they state children need to be 4 years old however they gladly took in two 3 year olds and my friends 1 ½ year old and worked with our children’s personal schedules (for eating and napping). It was a nice experience and our kids loved it.

Another appealing aspect of this property is the “over the top” golf course. As an avid golfer I have golfed all over the world. This golf course is, by far, the best in the Caribbean for many reasons. It is very well maintained with the most spectacular views I have every seen on almost every hole. It is many elevation changes. You are almost guaranteed to be the only person on the golf course at any given time. The greens fees are incredibly reasonable for the quality of course. It is managed by Trump golf courses.

All in all I would recommend this property for the right client, a couple or family seeking a luxury resort that is low key, relaxed, very scenic. Canouan can be reached by flying to Barbados and taking a connection (scheduled service) or I would highly recommend for a family of 4 or more arranging private transportation via either Barbados or preferably St Lucia (which is only 70 miles away). Private air transportation runs about $1800 for a flight one way (from Barbados). I am not sure what the cost would be from St. Lucia which is about half the distance than Barbados.

The hotel offers many interesting promotions some of which include all meals or private air charter. The hotel is a member of Leading Hotels of the World and I found that many of the guests seemed to come from Europe. I would also highly recommend this property for clients seeking a villa rental. Please contact me if you would like more details. Please feel free to email me with any questions or if you would like my help recommending the best room locations, etc.

You don't know anyone who's ever been here. I promise.

If you're reading this review, you're much like I was six months ago. One who can't find much of anything about Canouan Resort on the review sites, but the pictures make you want to go here. (If you don't want to read the rest of this post, here's the bottom line: if you can afford it, you won't be disappointed).

My wife and I were planning our honeymoon when I found Canouan. Of all the islands in the Grenadines, this was my favorite for the type of vacation we were looking for. If we were with family, or wanted to have more freedom to explore, I probably would have chose Bequia. If I were a millionaire, I probably would have chosen Mustique. As it were, we were one of about half a dozen guests in the entire resort. It was virtually a ghost town, or our own private resort, depending on how you look at it. (For the record, we visited in June 2012, on the very front of the official "hurricane season," but we did not have any weather issues).

There are some things you need to know about this resort that make it different than any others. It's definitely a property in transition. When we went, they were tearing down villas and expanding the resort with a new hotel. Most importantly, that means you will hear and see some construction. I had extensive conversations with the staff before we booked, who promised we would neither hear nor see any of the construction. But the crunching and grinding of heavy machinery is something you cannot ignore. You can see the signs from the hotel lobby, and we could see it from our villa across the bay. This also meant there is NO POOL. My apologies for writing that in all caps, but I know it's important to many people, especially those with children. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a suite with a private pool, which was nice, but not quite the same ambiance as a communal pool/hot tub. So be sure to check on the status of the construction/pool/whatever else you may care about before booking.

We opted to do the meal plan for dinner only. It was more than enough food, and we probably could have split a plan between the two of us. We often had leftovers that went unused the next day. The restaurants on the resort are great, but your venue is pre-selected for you. So while there are several restaurants on the resort, only one will be open per night. You also have to pay extra for any liquor, which was pricey, but not as bad as it could be. Our only complaint was one night during the week, Canouan Resort closes all of its restaurants and takes the guests to the sister hotel, Tamarind Beach. It's not as nice, and a completely different atmosphere. After a week of being waited on hand and foot, it was a jarring transition for a single meal, and the food was a disappointment.

As far as activities go, you are somewhat limited, even if you just want to sit by the beach. Thanks to the construction, the resort's primary beach was closed. They set up shop at Shell Beach, which is about 15 minutes away by golf cart. It's kind of fun to drive across the island on a golf cart (there are only some spots where you'll see a full size car or truck), but it can grow tiresome. On the opposite side of the island, there's another "hidden" beach, which is completely secluded and deserted. We found this exciting...until a half-naked man walked up the beach toward us carrying a fishing spear. It turns out his boat had capsized and he swam toward shore carrying his scuba and fishing gear. After swimming for more than an hour, we were happy to give him a ride back to the main gate on our golf cart. Suffice to say, there is not a phone or bar on this side of the island, so you're completely on your own if something goes wrong.

Due to a minor problem with our room, we were offered a half day catamaran ride to Tobago Cays. It's a fantastic experience that you should jump on, as long as your stomach can handle a slightly rough ride on the open seas.

The golf course is fantastic, even for an amateur like I am. Of all the courses I've ever played, this is the most beautiful. We were always the only ones out there, and it's immaculately manicured with spectacular views. Another must while on the island.

As I alluded to, the service here is top notch. You will not want for anything, in the restaurants, on the beach, in your room, or otherwise. My thanks especially to the staff including, but certainly not limited to, Jennifer, Candace, Levi, Gabriel, Johnny, Uz, Esther, and Sasha. I honestly can say that we became closer "friends," if you will, than any of the other guests. Most of the staff are very formal at first, as if they are instructed to be a bit stuffy. But that's not how my wife and I roll, so by the end of the week, we were all on a first name basis, and we learned so much about the island's history and culture from them.

You will see turtles everywhere. It's like seeing squirrels in a state park. For a few days, we stopped to look at each of them. Then, we realized it was turtle mating season. I won't go into detail, but it's a sight that would make you blush. It's just one of those unique experiences that you won't find anywhere else.

I will make one travel note: avoid flying SVG Air if you can. We were lucky enough to end up on a jet flying between Barbados and Canouan, but were stuck on a prop plane on the way back. It was one of the most terrifying flights we've ever been on.

Hopefully this will help any future travelers, but feel free to drop me a line with any specific questions. After all, now you know one person who's been to Canouan.

We stayed in February to celebrate my husband's birthday and Valentine's Day. Of course, our luggage was delayed and although it was not their fault, the follow up could use some work since I personally called Barbados to get information from the Airline because their information was completely incorrect and the luggage did not arrive on the next flight as promised.

Overall, the service was great; some folks stood out more than others such as Vince & Koya at the beach and Gideon was picked us up from the airport and seemed to be able to communicate effectively to management when something was wrong.

Mathieu, the one food & bev manager was wonderful; he made you feel welcome and attended to your needs. The other one was very stand off'ish and rarely came to our table to see if our needs were met and if they weren't, was not aware of them and made no attempt to close the gap.

We had great days out on the links; the staff was great as were the women at Bellini's knew our names on our 1st full day.

What made the trip not so wonderful? We had money stolen from our room; they investigated and never got back to us as to the disposition. There were cockroaches on multiple occasions in our room; they left bug spray for us but never took care of the problem. We reported it several times and upon writing the resort upon our return, the rooms manager's response was condescending at best and not sincere.

It it nice to see others had a great time but with a resort of this supposed caliber and iffy attention to detail, for this category of resort, there are much better choices and people who will actually treat you like they want you to come back. I do not have this feeling especially with the last response of "We hope your memories of us remain." Really, I could tell you what I think of that but it is not worth it.

We were staying on nearby Mustique and then Bequia and decided to visit Canouan for the day, thinking that we could come to the hotel for lunch. (We knew of others who had done this before). In short, this turned out to be a mistake and a pretty depressing experience.
Upon arrival at the main gate, we were greeted by staff who informed us that the resort was partly closed and undergoing major renovations and, as such, was not welcoming non-residents. Anywhere else in the world, this wouldn't have been a major issue. We would have gone elsewhere but there really didn't seem anywhere else to go as the resort occupies a huge chunk of the island: there is little else.
Given that the hotel was at least partly open, I failed to see where else we were supposed to go or why they couldn't find us some lunch. Nevertheless, I was spoken to rudely by a number of staff members.
There then followed a farcical half an hour or so in the baking heat when I insisted upon speaking to a manager and one refused to make themselves available. In the end, we were begrudgingly granted entry on the basis of a $150 US pp fee. Fine, but this set the tone for day.
After the ludicrous stand-off, the staff were generally pleasant but something is obviously badly wrong at management level. The staff seem poorly motivated and there is a terrible atmosphere around the resort. At one point in the empty restaurant a manager screamed so unpleasantly and unnecessarily at the poor waitress that we were made to feel very uncomfortable. He had not noticed that we were there but looked sheepish when he saw us. Frankly, nobody should be spoken to in the workplace like this. If this is an example of how the management of this hotel regard their staff, it is hardly surprising that the atmosphere is so poor.
Upon being driven around the resort, it was evident that this is a hotel on the slide. Many of the villas were boarded up and the entire place had a deserted feel. We were told that the hotel was far from full even in the week before Christmas.
There exists a glimmer of hope for the hotel and the island in the form of new investment and development. I hope that this is a success but, for now, it means a good deal of building work and a hotel that is half shut and soulless.
As we returned to the dock to wait for our boat we could not find one of the local people who had a good word to say about the hotel, which apparently is renowned for treating the local people and staff poorly.
Raw natural beauty is in abundance in Canouan. What is lacking is good old fashioned hospitality and a well cared for, motivated work force. A huge shame.
In spite of the fabulous weather and the beauty of this island, the Canouan Resort left us cold.

Response from traveler8444, Front Office Manager at Canouan Estate Resort & Villas

Thank you very much for your recent review. I am sorry that we have not lived up to your expectations and that you got to spend only a few hours in beautiful Canouan Island. I would be more than happy to get in contact with you directly and hopefully be able to welcome you back to truly experience our resort at least for one night. With regards to the poor service received at the gate I can only apologize as this is not the level of service that we strive to offer at the Canouan Resort. Also please note that we require advance bookings for all non residents wishing to visit the hotel or to use its facilities. This is our standard security policy. I must also inform you that December 2011 was a soft opening period (after our annual closing for hurricane season) when we were applying the final touches for a large group due to arrive at the end of the month. I hope that we can welcome you back one day and look forward to showing you our true level of hospitality service. Best regards, Andrei Front Office Manager

This island is a little out of the way, but well worth the effort. There are direct flights from St. Vincent and Barbados, and as soon as you land in the airport, you know you are someplace special. They picked us up in an air-conditioned van from the airport (if you stay a week in a suite they send a private airplane) with cool, mint scented towels and ice cold bottled water. From then on it was first class all the way.

What made Canouan different from other resorts is that it didn't have a resort feel. It is definitely boutique and not cookie cutter. Yes, the villas were exquisite and the facilities were top notch. But it was the people who made us feel at home. We felt loved and pampered from the moment we arrived. Whether you are in a private villa or a hotel guest, you receive the same unparalleled service and food.

Canouan is very romantic. The turn down service makes it really special with all the fresh flowers on the beds at night. The massage in glass-bottom huts over the water is a don't miss..Although we came as a family, I left feeling like my husband and I had a second honeymoon and our son fell in love with Kid's Club staff who kept him very well entertained. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is getting married or as a honeymoon destination.

Canouan is also breathtakingly beautiful. Completely unspoiled. Very private and an eco-tourist's dream. The oceans abound with turtles, rays and flying fish. Land tortoises are everywhere. The resort has small private villas nestled in a natural tropical setting with beautiful views. Each room or villa comes with a golf cart to tool around the resort in. No matter what activity we returned from, the staff always had our carts relocated for us so they were always available.

The food was also amazing. What isn't native to the island or caught locally, they grow on site hydroponically. The restaurant is Italian but they have a different theme and menu every night. We loved the Caribbean night. Breakfast is served on the terrace and lunch down at the beach or up at the casino.

I can't recommend this place enough. We will be back and we love you, Canouan!

This is a fantastic resort that offers all that you could wish for in the region.
We stayed in a villa with breath-taking views over the golf course and sea and outside were 3 golf buggies for our free disposal during our stay. Our butler, Javid, was ever present and sorted out any minor request that we wanted.
The old Donald Trump International Golf Course we used every day of our stay. It is in mint condition. The front 9 holes are park like and relatively easy, whereas the back 9 offering amazing views were a real challenge. The Pro, Mark and his staff were incredibly obliging and made our stay all the more enjoyable.
The choice of food in both restaurants and the beach bar was great and the staff were so incredibly friendly in all locations. We will be back here next year and years to follow for sure.

"You have a big choice of villas, all with spectacular views so the location is not really important. With the golf buggies you can move freely around the resort. The Kids Club is amazing where they invite children from 3 to 13 and over. The Spa is fantastic with very charming and efficient masseuses. Try Bang if you want a really firm massage and Made for a slightly more gentle one."
