Having 2 children, I was looking for a family room in Guenzburg and surprisingly, considering the proximity to Legoland Germany, none of the main Internet booking sites could locate a suitable room (the nearest was in Ulm, then only a room with 2 double beds). However, searching the local tourist board web site I found a link to the hotels own web site
We booked a family suite which was 2 connecting rooms on the first floor. The first room was a large room with double bed and wardrobe then an archway leading to the smaller second room which was L shaped with bunk beds , a sofa bed and TV. There was a large shower room off the second room.
The rooms were recently re-furbished, spotless and both the bed sheets and towels were changed each day.
The hotel is situated above a cafe (I think it was also called the Guntia, where a buffet breakfast was served, included in the room rate) and on the pedestrianised main square. Although in a pedestrian zone, it was possible to park outside the hotel to unload and load and free parking was included in a local underground car park a few minutes walk away (€10 refundable deposit for the car park ticket).
In all, I would summarise this hotel as good value, the rooms were a good size (practical for a family of 4 … the kids liked the bunk beds) and the buffet breakfast was simple but filling. The only downside is that the hotel does not accept credit cards.
Our stay was on a saturday night
Drove into market square to drop off bags and then parked in free car park about 200m away.
Hotel entrance next to the ice cream shop and not that appealing but didnt really matter.
We stayed in a refurbished room with a double bed and sofa bed. No frills, simply furnished but room very spacious with a table and chairs. A modern ensuite bathroom with a good shower.
Location fantastic for the centre of Gunzburg, which is what we wanted. The town has many restaurants at very reasonable prices and a good cafe culture. Our room was at the front of the property but closing the window, shut out any noise from below.
Breakfast was served in the cafe below and was a typical breakfast - excellent coffee (didnt ask for tea) juice, semmeln rolls, meat and salami, and cheese jams etc, cereals, and yoghurts. Choices limited but children and I content with what was on offer - and plenty to eat. Have stayed at a similar priced hotel nearer legoland but would recommend the extra drive into Gunzburg and appreciate what the town has to offer. The hotel Guntia garni is ideally situated to do this and recommend it for a trip to Legoland. It appears to have pitched its market for families and it "does what it says on the tin". Wont bother checking other hotels and reviews next time we go (we visit Legoland twice a year) and will stay here again.
.com and we could not access the second room. We got charged for 2 rooms and contacted both the hotel and bookig.com. no resolution, we simply asked to not get charged for a service we did not receive. I am always reluctant to give a bad review but both booking.com and hotel failed. The amount is not big 80 euros but I think this shows something about business ethics of both parts involved. We ended up sleeping in one room 4 adults. I am not sure if Europe has fire codes but the establishment is clearly out of US fire code, single wooden stains with no secondary escape.
Also, be aware that check in and out is virtual and without smart phone with internet you are out of luck. Fortunately, we had phones
Our family of four (both kids under 6) stayed 2 nights in a 'family room'. The room was very spacious and clean - but basic. This was not of concern to us as the beds were comfortable and the shower had plenty of water pressure. We did not spend much time in the actual room.
The lack of a door seperating the two rooms (parents and kids) may have been an issue had we all not had jet lag and been prepared to fall asleep at similar times. It could certainly be a problem putting the kids to bed otherwise - but manageable.
Each morning we enjoyed the fresh breakfast of cereal, yoghurt, bread, cold meats and cheese. Fresh Hot Chocolate was made for us on request. The owner was very helpful and welcoming. He spoke very good English.
The town is very quaint and we enjoyed the ability to practice our German as the native language was preferred by the local businesses. One restaurant offered us English menus - but it was more fun to work it out for ourselves!
While it is possible to park the car out the front of the hotel to pack/unpack luggage, beware that weekend mornings can be very difficult due to the market that takes over the main street. My husband didn't get too many welcoming smiles as he tried to manouvre the car!
Overall we were very happy with our arrangement and would recommend the hotel to other families looking for somewhere to stay that is convenient to Legoland.
But that was nothing next to the strange odor that reigned in there, so you basically have to sleep with the windows open; not recommended for light sleepers as the closeby clock tower rings every half hour.
The room itself was fairly clean, but the bathroom was really not (see pictures). The decoration came straight out of the 80's; a good renovation would be necessary here. The best part of the stay was the super fast WiFi with excellent reception in the room (although you'll need to find the password yourself because there is no staff on location to help you).
The breakfast downstairs (in an ice cream restaurant) was similar to the room: basic and functional. Choices were limited and the quality was at best average.
I agree that the italian owner is nice, but it didn't make up for a poor room/breakfast.
Reservation said 30m2 for a family, but the room including bathroom was 20 m2 at most
The room 101 is right above the street lamps and hotel sign outside. The light came right through the curtains which clearly didn't block enough light (don't close completely).
Also the room is not in a corridor, isolated from noise, but directly to the staircase so that you listen all that is happening outside... And likely also viceversa you are heard from the stairs
The room itself was fairly clean.
