I stayed the ashram for over 2 weeks and had an amazing experience. The location is out of this world, right next to mother ganga yet still close to all rishikesh has to offer. Food was delicious, every meal was fantastic. Yoga was tough but so satisfying, Harsh and Vicky really helped strengthen my practice. Loved chanting first thing in the morning. By the end of my stay I felt part of the family. Thank you to Yogi Ji, Annika for your hospitality and Kailash for being so damn cute. Loved the doggies Peace and Shanti. Was colder than I expected, howling wind down the valley but when the sun peeps over the hills the days are beautiful. Rooms are basic but comfortable, only issue was lack of hot water especially when it is winter. Definitely a place I would love to go back to.

Taking a few steps down a none paved trail, on one side Tapovan hilltop, on the other the Holly Ganga, out of the woods crossing a small stream appears as if out of a ferry tail, this magical Yoga Ashram, surrounded by a peaceful environment, blended with constant sense of goodness, humour & love.
In which each person can relate to in regards to his/her individual interests
Guest House equipped with wide & clean rooms with attached toilet / shower complex in a shanti atmosphere on an isolated Ganga beach near the hectic Laxman Jhula center, and still as if you are in another place, where you can find peace, spirit & nature, a place to just be and find your inner center.
Or if yoga is what you wish for, you can find here a daily schedule that will enable you to get into a Yogic routine in an easier manner with classes twice a day ran by devoted teachers guided by Yogi Ji
And if beyond the physical practice you wish to deepen even more or become a teacher, you could join monthly Teacher Training Course (TTC) which includes intensive teachings of Yoga Philosophy, scriptures, chanting, Hatha&Ashtanga yoga practice, combined with pranayama (breathing) & Kriya (purification) along with meditations, blended with days of fun and small parties in the chill out hut that in chilly nights you will sit in it around a fire listening to a wide variety of music, depends on the mood in which all of us are at the moment...
And the people are so warm and welcoming. And the meals have one common&essential ingredient, called love. The chef takes care of the stomach of tourists who come from different cultures and tastes, and somehow again and again manages to figure out the recipe that would be most tasty to all, and everything is so reach and healthy, pure devoted delicacy. Should you wish to take some cooking classes, just ask for that as well.
Not further much to add, you are more than welcome to check out the website, what's certain is if you don't come here to taste and feel it by yourselves, you couldn't really grasp what's it all about,
for every word just deviates you from the authentic essence,
so all I have left is to invite you to come share with me and the rest of us this being,
Heaven on Earth I call it
Highly Recommended

Great people, great food, great location. I spent 2 weeks at Mahatma. What a lucky opportunity to meet great people, relax, practice yoga, meditate and find peace. Staff is amazing, friendly and nice. Location is perfect for those who look for privacy and quietness. I can't wait to go back. I really love Mahatma.

I participated in the yoga teacher training at Mahatma Yoga Ashram from August-Sept 2012. So I will start with the positives: The accomodation and and location are incredible and so are the workers of the "ashram". The asana teacher, Ajey, is also pretty incredible and really knows what he is doing and pushes his students just the correct amount. If you are looking for a beautiful place to stay in Rishikesh to take daily asana classses, this is the place; however the yoga teacher training is NOT SUGGESTED AT ALL!!!!
The "yogi" who runs the ashram is not a yogi at all. He is trying to make a buisness out of an ashram and does not know what he is doing. The lectures were highly unorganized and only took place for maybe half of the program. The meditation class was NOT a meditation class at all and there is an existent and obvious caste system. The men who prepare all the meals are amazing; however, because they are of a lower caste, they do not sit with the others for meals.
The worst part is, that after wasting a month of my time at this yoga ashram thinking I would finish with the experience needed to become a yoga teacher, aside from the feeling of not being prepared, when i went to register with the yoga alliance, they responded that MAHATMA YOGA ASHRAM IS NOT A REGISTERED SCHOOL WITH THE YOGA ALLIANCE!!!!!!!
Please do not be fooled by this establishment, their are many other reliable places all over rishikesh and india where you will have a better experience. PLEASE DONT give your money and waste your time to a system that operates this way.

Hate being spiteful and leaving one star reviews but the relative price of staying at Mahatma is expensive for India and the standards were terrible. Location was beautiful (you genuinely most probably cant get better in Rishikesh) and the accommodation its self was fine (for India). Food was great and the staff were really nice.
I booked on a beginner course online on the Yogpeeth website, failing to see the small print about class being combined with the normal retreat. Even if this was the case, there was literally no extra/specific teachings for me. The standard of teaching itself was very poor and I think my positions were corrected on average about once per day or less (maybe I'm just a yoga natural?!?!). The teachers seemed to be inexperienced.
The lectures were incredibly hard to follow (most people didn't go by day three) and the meditation (when he turned up) was very limited.
Some friends I met there had enough money to stay there and just use it as a hotel which is what I'd advise. In no way go on this course as a beginner.

As a beginner, I can deepen my understanding of Yoga in this place. I can see the beauty of Yoga, philosophy, and culture. I can realize that the Yoga is not a mere physical exercise but a spiritual practice. I think here is a great place to get close to Yoga.

It was my second trip to Rishikesh and we were a bit surprised that we ended up in Mahatma Yoga Hotel because we actually booked with Yog Peeth. However, we were more than happy at this place! We loved the Yoga classes & daily lectures with Yogi Ji and Sonu, the amazing view on the Ganges and hills. The location is great because it is near to shops and cafes, but still quiet and very relaxing. True what others posted, the rooms could be a tiny bit cleaner, however since everything else was great I don't want to moan about this. We went to an Ashram in Laxman Jhula in the second week but came back to Mahatma Yoga almost every day to continue classes there. Next time we'll stay at Mahatma Yoga Hotel for the entire time :-). We also did the wonderful hiking tour and the rafting organized by them. Overall we had a great time there!

My partner and I stayed at the Mahatma Yoga Ashram for 8 days at the end of August 2014. We have practiced yoga for a couple of years at home and had done a retreat before. And after seeing all the amazing reviews for this ashram we thought it would be neat to do another one at the birthplace of yoga but unfortunately our stay didn't live up to our expectations. We were supposed to stay for 2 weeks however we cut our stay short as we wanted to travel elsewhere and we realised the cost of the stay was actually really expensive for India.
ASHRAM
The Ashram is really hard to find and the directions given to us were not sufficient – “go to the Luxman Jhula Bridge and its 100m along the river from there.” Everyone we met at the Ashram couldn’t find it either. We ended up at Rishikesh Yog Peeth on the other side of Luxman Jhula, several kms away as did others. A staff member dropped us back at the bridge and showed us where to go. Hopefully these directions are better – find the Luxman Jhula Bridge and walk UP stream on the LEFT hand side bank of the river, walk up some stairs then down a ramp, past a huge pile of rubbish and then across a small waterfall, you should be able to see it from there.
The Ashram is set on the banks of the river Ganga in a quiet place. When the river is high it turns a murky brown however it is still a very nice setting as the sun rises over the hills. All rooms were fan only and our fan only had one speed, very fast and noisy. All rooms had an ensuite with shower and toilet. The hot water in the shower didn’t work all the time and there was a constant sewerage smell coming from the toilet in our room.
CLASSES
Classes were supposed to be held daily between 6am – 9pm, including meals, 6 days a week with Sunday off to go trekking or rafting depending on season. Purification and Pranayama were meant to be alternated first thing in the morning, however we only did Pranayama once the entire time we were there as the teacher didn’t show up, very disappointing.
Yoga class was up on the top floor twice daily. I wouldn’t recommended this class for the absolute beginner as the teacher wasn’t the most helpful and always made you push your hardest into each position, some being very difficult. It was a very serious environment.
The lectures were the highlight for me, I find studying yoga sutras very interesting although it was often hard to understand the teacher.
Meditation classes were held daily in the evening for an hour. The meditations were good, however the same teacher that does the Pranayama does the Meditations and didn’t show up a couple of times.
FOOD
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were at set times and the meals were mostly Indian as you would expect. I thought the food was average for what you’re paying. They did have free filtered water downstairs.
We were there the wrong season for the rafting but the trek up to the hills was at sunrise, to a monastery and then down to the Neer Waterfall, it was a good trek and would recommend doing it if you’re in town.
Overall we paid $50USD EACH a night (there was no discount for a couple occupying only one room) for the experience and later found out we could do single yoga/meditation classes in town for around 200 rupees. I wouldn’t go back and therefore wouldn’t recommend.

Mahatama Yoga ( Rishikesh Yoga Peeth) offered me one of the most beautiful & serene experiences of my life! The ashram is located at the banks of river Ganga and is surrounded by mountains on one side and temples on the other. The cool breeze and flowing river stream along with the sound on temple bells and chanting from across the river makes it unbelievably peaceful and calm. We had a meditation class on full moon night on the river banks which seemed like a dream!
The days are well structured with 2 yoga sessions, meditation and a theory class. The food is good and the staff is very supportive and friendly. They take extra care to accommodate special requests. The ashram also organizes rafting & massage for its residents which is high quality. There is plenty of free time to walk around in the town – Lakshman jhulla is just 10 minutes away.
The Yoga classes for beginners can be very intense initially but it gets better every day as the body adapts. If you have some yoga practice from before you will be better off.
The rooms and facility in general is good. They might need some bit of upgrading of the beddings, tableware, and bathrooms. Please carry your own towels and toiletries – yoga mats are provided. For women traveling alone – this place is safe & secure. Enjoy your stay

I visited Mahatma on my second visit to Rishikesh. I, initially, was reluctant to stay in Laxman Jhula after having stayed in Ram Jhula--seems like traveller's usually prefer one over the other, but was extremely pleased at what awaited down a long unpaved path leading to Mahatma.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the extremely friendly staff who met us to carry our bags.
I was given a room on the second floor which offered panoramic views of Maa Ganga. My room was very large as was the bathroom. There was a generous balcony with chairs overlooking the river, the beach, the mountains-- Mahatma felt like home. Contributing to this was the dynamic owner, Yogiji and the staff-- who all feel like family. The food is remarkable! Like, amazingly remarkable. All of us on retreat would hustle back to Mahatma for mealtimes.
I really enjoyed practicing yoga on the beach and spent many hours swimming or simply meditating by the river. I cannot sing the praises of Mahatma any higher and can't wait to return there in October.
