Detailed Reviews
Gracious hosts, Kristen and Phil, went out of their way to welcome us and make our 3 day getaway a treasured memory. The 200 year old farmhouse has been beautifully restored without destroying its charm. Kristen’s creative and delicious breakfasts were plated as if in a 5 star restaurant. A collection of horses, goats, chickens (including Roger the rooster), ducks and especially their black dogs Nico and Nina, provided added entertainment. The Marriott riding stable (1/2 mile away), the Appalachian Trail (2 miles down the road), wineries, and fine dining are all convenient to this B&B. We will definitely be back!

We highly recommend Black Dog Farm Inn! It is an easy drive from DC Metro and you really are in the beautiful Virginia countryside at this location. Definitely plan for two nights. The owners are really great and friendly, but they have also created a space where you can be alone on the property, especially on the comfortable deck off of the sleeping room. Keep in mind this is a 200 year old property+, but that said it is in amazing condition and the rooms/especially the king bed are very comfortable and clean. The bathroom is very large and the “rain” shower head was a nice plus. AC works well and the room has a mini fridge complete with bottled water and a bottle of wine. Breakfast was amazing and eggs were courtesy of the nearby flock. Easy location for visiting nearby wineries. We can’t rave enough about the place, and can’t wait to go back in the fall.

If ever there was a perfect place to relax and leave the stress of everyday life behind, this is it! From the inviting look of the stately old manor house, to the beautifully maintained gardens, you immediately feel a sense of peacefulness come over you, and that’s just the beginning! Innkeepers Kristen and Phil are two of the kindest and most hospitable people we have ever met and go out of their way to make their guests feel at home, from the delicious home made breakfasts to the attention to every tiny detail in the rooms. Of course, the highlight of the stay is meeting official greeters Nina and Niko, two lovable black labs, and all of the farm animals. It was a real treat hearing Kristen tell of their backstories, especially the horses. We cannot say enough good things about our experience there and are already planning a return. We arrived as strangers and left as friends, and we can’t think of a better compliment than that.

My wife and I stayed at the Inn for a weekend getaway.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the Owner/Inkeepers, Kristin and Phil.
We were welcomed into their "home" with a greeting by the most friendly dogs ever. In our beautiful room was a private bath, fireplace, balcony and a bottle of wine and chocolates.
We wanted to go out for dinner so Kristin called and got us last minute reservations. Helps to know your neighbors...
Breakfast the next morning was delicious. Omelettes, juice, fruit and muffins and of course coffee. The Inkeepers even sat with us and gave us some history of the property.
The room was immaculate as were the grounds with Roger the rooster along with goats and horses.
We would highly recommend Black Dog Farm for a nice quiet getaway from the city.
Thank you Kristin and Phil.

The innkeepers are terrific, from the moment we drove up to the property (spoiled right off the bat by some rich treats and wine) through every interaction. They were generously available when needed, but never overbearing. In fact, each of Phil and Kristin had an impressive knack for intuiting what we might be interested in, setting up a romantic fireside experience at a moment's notice and arranging to show different parts of the home and farm. (They noticed as I became increasingly intrigued by the property, animals, and history over the course of the stay.) The space itself was modern in just the ways you would hope, with excellent amenities — enough to spoil my partner and I, for a while. In other aspects, you can safely expect everything you might want or ask for — a beautiful area rich with activities to do, from the outdoorsy and rural to the delicate and downtown; expert local knowledge; activities in and around the home; ample information about the history of the property and area; excellent food (plus its presentation) and relaxed conversation at breakfast; intriguing back stories about Phil and Kristin's lives and experiences before innkeeping; and relatively easy access from the highway; etc.
To top it off, though this will soon date the review, they had a respectful and kind approach to COVID, providing us with the information and safety we needed. In this hectic, troubled year, we found a real gem — something of a safe haven.

We had a wonderful weekend here and were impressed by the friendliness of the hosts and the wonderful breakfast we were served!
Do yourselves a favor and book a stay here you’ll be glad you did!!
There are several relaxing things to do around the area (wineries, horseback riding, hiking, etc). A nice place to get away from the grind of the city and everything else that’s going on. Will definitely be back.

"Friendly" and "accommodating" seem grossly inadequate words to describe the hosts Kristen & Phil. They were simply fabulous. The property is so beautiful and set in a really breath taking area. Our biggest mistake was not scheduling more time. We only had the one night and left longing for more. The Welby Suite was spacious, comfortable, clean, and finely appointed. The entire house was rich in history. Breakfast was fantastic. My hope is to return in the future for a longer stay when we'd be able to more properly enjoy the property and the surrounding wineries.

This is the second time my daughter and I stayed at this wonderful bed & breakfast inn. Since it was spring we had a chance to truly enjoy the farm with beautiful scenery and all the lovingly cared for barnyard friends.
Delicious breakfast and coffee was the perfect way to start the day! After trips to wineries, dinner outings, it was like coming home as we returned to Black Dog Farm. We love the Welby Suite and its bathroom. The complimentary chocolate and wine are top rate. Kristen, Phil, Nina & Niko (the ladies' man 🥰) are the best hosts. It was so nice to catch up with great conversation and lots of laughs after missing a visit in 2020. Looking forward to our next stay!
