Detailed Reviews
What a GREAT place to escape to for the weekend. The hosts, Susan and Joe, made us feel like we were at home. The house's ambiance was very relaxing. We stayed in the Royal Suite and the huge king size sleigh bed was incredibly comfortable. The house is located close to skyline caverns, skyline drive, and a nice scenic 15-20 min. drive to some great wineries. We HIGHLY recommend this place!!!

Tanglewood is a elegant family home located on a hillside overlooking the town of Front Royal. The historic main street of Front Royal is only a 5 minute drive away by car but the huge old trees on and around the property and its elevated location make you feel like you are in the country. Although we did not do so, one could easily walk into town.
First, it is important to understand that this is a traditional B&B where the owners graciously share their home with you. And what a home it is! The owners are art collectors with electic taste so you can wander from room to room admiring their collection much as if you were in an art gallery. Their home is filled with antiques, custom pieces and other treasure collected over a lifetime. But the home is very comfortable and lived in and you definitely do not feel like you are in a museum. The owners welcome you to use all of the reception rooms on the main floor and the expansive front porch. The website for the inn [www.tanglewoodinn.com] will give you an excellent virtual tour of their home.
We stayed in the Shenandoah Suite in the main house. It was on the second floor up a wide staircase past a fabulous two-story stained-glass window. Our room was spacious, with a small balcony and decorated with antiques on a Provencal theme (blue and yellow). It had a very comfortable king-size bed with a well-appointed bath room with a whirlpool tub.
However, the true warm of the inn comes from its owners. Although we were complete strangers (arriving somewhat late), we were treated like long-lost family members and invited to have refreshments while we discussed dinner plans and our plans for the week-end generally. Even my mother does not fuss about me like this when I come home to visit!
Be prepared to eat when you go to Tanglewood! There are freshly baked cookies, snacks, candies and beverages (soft drinks, water and wine) available in the main foyer most of the time. And Joe's breakfasts will hold you for the whole day. We were full after the delicious home-made scones and huge bowls of fruit with cream but that was just the appetizer. These were followed by an omelette, sausages and bacon, and home-made home fries (not those awful frozen cubes that are marketed as home fries these days). The main course items were served family-style and, although we were only two people, there was easily enough food for four. And it was delicious....I am still dreaming of those scones, chockful of blueberries.
While we were there, we took a peak at the guest house on the property and were very impressed by how spacious and well-decorated and equipped it was. It has two bedrooms on the second floor which are separated by a two-story solarium with skylights. I imagine it would be full of sunshine. The main floor has a kitchen and dining area as well as a living room with a stone working fireplace (for cooler nights) and two decks. It would be a great place for two couples travelling together or a family. However, the layout would make it equally attractive for a couple who did not mind sharing the common areas on main floor with another travelling couple. As there are two decks on opposite ends of the guest house, each would have some privacy. The next time we go to Tanglewood, I think that we will give the guest house a try.
While Tanglewood is relatively pricey for a B&B, we found it to be worth it. You are not paying just for a place to sleep but for the comfort and pleasures of a stay in a lovely old Southern home with hosts who are genuinely pleased to have you staying with them. When Joe told me that he and his wife still commuted to work in DC four days a week , I said they must be exhausted having house guests to take care of as well. I believe it when he told me that operating the B&B was not work, it was fun!
Tanglewood is conveniently located to take in the Skyline Drive, the Civil War sites, Virginia's caverns, the gorgeous Virginia countryside and the local wineries. If you enjoy antique-ing, the Emporium in Strasburg (which is just a 15 minute drive away), is a lot of fun. And, if you like the theatre, I strongly recommend a visit to the Wayside Theatre in Middletown VA, about 20 minutes away. This is a great little regional theatre (with a fine troup of actors) which is now celebrating its 48th season. Do try to go if you are in the area.

We had a wonderful stay at Tanglewood. It was so peaceful and everthing that was needed was taken care of. Every detail coverd. We arrived to a cold bottle of wine and beer in the fridge. We enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the lighting bugs and listening to the late Summer noises on a warm Virgina evening. Then we woke to a lovely breakfast.
Not the typical too many flowers in the room that we find in a B&B. Very nicely decorated for comfort and quiet.
