My daughter and I stayed at the Refuge Inn for (7) nights from August 1 - August 8, 2020. We stayed in room 116 on the pool/pine tree side of the hotel. Our room had two queen beds, a flat screen tv inside the armoire, and a dresser to put clothes.

The room also had a small refrigerator and table and chairs to eat on, which was nice. The bathroom was nice and clean. There is a sliding glass door which leads to a small outdoor patio with two chairs, which faces the pine tree court yard and the pool area.

Due to Covid 19, everyone wore masks in the hotel. The staff provided fresh linens as needed and would empty trash as needed for you. The indoor/outdoor pool is a really nice pool surrounded by trees. It's 8 ft. deep on the deep end and was quite relaxing to spend time listening to the sea gulls and other birds nearby as you enjoy time swimming. They provide pool towels for your use.

Again do to Covid-19, the staff delivered a small continental breakfast outside your door each morning which consisted of an apple, orange, homemade muffins or scones, apple juice boxes and Hershey candy kisses. You can also request coffee packets and cream/sugar too and that will be delivered too.

One of the best features of this hotel is its location to the Wildlife Refuge, which is less than a 1/2 mile away. The Wildlife Refuge is where the beach is, the lighthouse, the nature loop, bike & hiking trails and of course the ponies.

The Bike Depot is directly next door to the hotel and is where you can rent bikes to ride over into the Wildlife Refuge. We rented bikes three times during our stay and rode safely into the Wildlife Refugee. A McDonald's Restaurant is also next door and the Chincoteague Dinner is across the street. Everything is so close and convenient near the hotel.

The hotel is very cozy and is locally owned and operated and is so family friendly. We recommend anyone to stay at the Refugee Inn if you plan to stay in Chincoteague for a vacation.

This hotel gives you the feel of a bed and breakfast in a cozy way. Staff are friendly and inviting. The bed was honestly more comfortable than my own bed at home. The pillows smelled fresh and full of fluffy stuffing that made me just want to sink my head in. The room had plush carpet and all the small touches that make you feel like you are at home away from home. A plant on the table and several lamps around the room set the tone. A table with 2 chairs to eat dinner together along with a desk was nice. White sheets hide nothing and I was happy about not worrying about the thought of insects. The bathtub was a deep soak tub with nice hot water so bring your bubble bath. The room came with a nice walk out patio for morning coffee. I advise bring your own fresh coffee and a few filters with bottled water to fill.
Location was the highlight though. It's next to the beach within a 2 min drive. Bring cash if you want to buy from the gift shop in the lobby.

It reminded me of an old summer camp lodge except for adults. The rooms are decorated beautifully like a bed and breakfast complete with breakfast delivered to your room in the morning. You get to choose what you want (loved the ham and egg crossants and fresh baked bread). Everything that you could possibly need for your stay they have already thought of. Such as extra power outlets on each night stand, extra trash bags, set of 4 towels instead of 2, all the little extra touches. I love that they have also adopted 3 of the wild ponies and you can go feed grain for just .50 a bag anytime you want. All of the staff was super helpful with local sites and restaurants to visit. Only issue is the mosquitoes on the island (not just the resort). They did warn us at the front desk to not walk on any trails without bug spray and they were certainly right! They were so kind and hospitable will definitely be back!

We traveled with a family of six (parents and 10, 14, 17, 21). The islands are beautiful and the The Refuge Inn allows convenient access to Assateague and all its natural wonders. We loved the convenience of renting bikes and biking over to the beach and around the island of Assateague. We could walk just a little way down the beach and be completely by ourselves, which was so important to us during this time. We stayed in the condo type suite that sleeps six. We were disappointed to only have one bathroom with such a large family, but that was our fault as we didn't read carefully and just assumed there would be another bathroom in a place that sleeps 6. We were disappointed that the suite is advertised as sleeping 6, but the bed in the loft is by no means big enough for two older children. We had to pay an extra $10 a night for a roll away bed. The front office staff member was not very polite with me when I called to ask for the bed and I expressed surprise that they expected two adults to be able to sleep together in the futon bed that is in the loft. I thought maybe they would wave the roll away fee, but instead she was slightly rude with me. So I said thank you, and let it drop. If our kids were little it would have been fine, but not for adults or older children.
We had access to a well equipped kitchen that allowed us to stay out of busy restaurants and save some money by cooking for our large family. We enjoyed the large screened in porch to hang towels and eat outside without the bother of bugs.
There was a loud knocking noise in the master bedroom that made it hard to sleep. Possibly the rattle of an air conditioner? Not sure. It came and went. We mentioned it to the front office staff and they said they would have maintenance look into it. However, it continued for our whole stay.
We appreciated the breakfast delivery every morning and how the staff would leave fresh towels once we put the wet ones outside our door. The Refuge Inn tried hard to put Covid measures in place and we appreciated that.
My only other complaint is that the stairs that wind up to the loft are metal and jut out right over the living room chairs. My son cracked his head on accident getting up from his chair and had quite a lump on his head.
All in all, The Refuge Inn is a good place to stay, especially for the location. I might look for other places next time if I travel with my whole family again. However, with a smaller party or just little children I would stay here again.
We were astounded by the raw beauty of the islands and quite enjoyed the beach, the bikes, and the boat tour we went on.

Thanks for such a thorough review! We put a lot of effort into our COVID procedures and it's wonderful to have that work appreciated. You are totally right about the "full" size futon in the loft-- It is a full, which is smaller than a queen, and might not be comfortable for all sizes of guests. Six adults in the suite is doable (many of our guests do it) but it is a little tight, especially with the bathroom situation. Next time you're traveling with the whole family, try the Suite and also book room 234! it's right next door, and then you have a total of three sleeping areas and two bathrooms, as well as access to the kitchen, dining area, veranda, and comfortable seating areas. Not putting a second bathroom in the suites is one of our biggest regrets about that addition! A small bathroom would be perfect where the master closet is. Maintenance checked out the noise above the bedroom and put in a ticket with our HVAC repairman, because it seemed significantly noisier than it should be. He ordered a part (which took forever! Thanks COVID!) and made a repair, but it's still noisier than we'd like. We're looking into having the unit replaced or relocated this winter. In non-COVID times, Maintenance would leave a card in your room letting you know that they'd investigated an issue and what the outcome was (fixed/can't fix till you leave/ couldn't locate issue/etc.) But since they aren't allowed to enter rooms unless absolutely necessary, that notification just didn't happen with your stay. We're so sorry about that! It's just one of the many hiccups we've encountered while adjusting to this new and strange world of travel and hospitality during a pandemic. We'll think about some ways we can modify that practice--thanks for bringing it to our attention!

During the covid situation we were very impressed with the care that was put in by the owners and staff. Other visiors were respectful as well. They gave us written info of the other businesses operations which made it easy to eat and shop. They offered a free night to thank us for our support as they didn't offera hot breakfast do to the situation. Not a bad trade off. They did leave a small continental style and coffe at the door. The house keeping staff was very helpful taking our garbage and resupplied us with toiletries.

We stay here often do to the close location to the beach and nature trails. We never had issues with loud people or a bad room. This time it was so quiet. Just soothing sounds of the usual frogs and seagulls. We got here before the holiday weekend. I love to be able to have the screen doors open and hear the nature. My husband loves the black curtians(Great for napping). They have loads of amenities. The pool is my favorite. They even have food for the ponies instead of corn in the machines. The ponies will notice you cuz you have the good stuff. The front desk gave us utensils for our dinner when the restaurant forgot.

The parking is easy and the bike depot is very affordable. I will never stay anywhere else as it's simply too easy staying there and again I love the nature being all around.

Our family of four stayed in room 215. We were able to see the lighthouse every night and the hotels ponies each day. The hotel itself is very clean. Check in went smoothly. They are taking extra precautions due to Covid 19 and it is clear they care about their patrons. Breakfast was delivered each morning & consisted of juices, fruit, yogurt, & scones.

The staff was accommodating anytime we needed an extra towel or bar of soap.

It’s one of the closest hotels to the Assateague National Shore with a bike rental facility on site.

The WiFi was also terrific! Our children were completing cyber school work daily and had no issues with connectivity.

We would definitely stay here again!

Located just before you cross over to the wildlife reserve this cute hotel is quiet and very Covid cautious. Plexiglass between the staff and you as you check in & slips on the door so you can just leave the keys and not even go to the desk for checkout. Individual brown bag breakfasts you choose and place order on outside of door the night before. Larger rooms, very clean eith free parking. And best of all - the ponies! My kids were delighted to feed and see horses before we ever go to the reserve.

We were nervous about going anywhere but missed our favorite spot! When we arrived in our room, it was immaculate. The remote was wrapped in plastic, breakfast was delivered to your door, the pen used to sign in was just sanitized, you could tell they had gone through many extra steps to make it safe and clean. And the location can't be beat. About the closest you can get to the beach:)

Such a lovely spot. Comfy, beachy rooms very close to the Wildlife Refuge and other attractions. Right next to some ponies, too.

Why I’m writing this review, though, is because they handled COVID-19 precautions so incredibly well. This was my first hotel stay since the crisis began and I was nervous. They were incredibly thoughtful and safe, with contactless check-in, signage throughout, and contactless breakfast drop off. The rooms were also immaculate. Thank you for the amazing and safe stay!

We chose to stay here after reading about their COVID precautions. We appreciated that staff did not enter our room and that there was contactless trash and towel pick up. Also contactless check out. Our room was very clean. The inn has a prime location a minute from the refuge.

We agree with the other commenter who mentioned that the beds were lumpy. Also bugs were abundant. Not the inn’s fault but come prepared with Off or another type of bug spray. The mosquitos take no prisoners.

I can’t remember what we paid, but we were attracted to the place because of the reviews we read and because the price seemed reasonable to us. Our experience was that we made a good choice—very fair price, excellently run facility, friendly staff, nice complimentary breakfast, perhaps the most convenient location for seeing the ponies.
